They're so pathetic that they're kept out of Hell, just to deny the damned (who at least chose something) the satisfaction of watching them.

* ''Literature/RecordOfLodossWar'': Karla the Gray Witch is either this or ChaosIsEvil. A sorceress who belonged to the Kingdom of Sorcery, which almost successfully united the disparate nations of Lodoss, she was left one of the only survivors when that kingdom was toppled at the height of its power. Surviving by becoming a [[GrandTheftMe body-snatching spirit bound to a circlet]], she fixated on the idea that unification was inherently evil, as it was only possible by the ascension of a single faction to dominance. She spent the next five centuries [[TheChessmaster manipulating factions and individuals]] to keep Lodoss from ever knowing peace through unification or conquest, building up factions and then tearing them down to ensure an endless status quo of chaos, war and misery that [[WellIntentionedExtremist she still believed to be better than what would happen if any one power grew too strong]]. The sage Wort, one of the only beings alive to know about her agenda, proclaims her to be utterly mad. Considering that the setting began as an ActualPlay of a ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' campaign, the similarity between Karla's InsaneTrollLogic and that of an old-school druid is very interesting to note.

Some TrueNeutral people are devoted to the BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil - They fight only because the forces of evil grow too strong. Some just don't care very much about Good vs Evil (or Lawful vs Chaotic), only getting involved if their personal interests and/or friends and family are threatened. Some, however, are ''[[OmnicidalNeutral militantly]]'' [[OmnicidalNeutral neutral]]; so devoted to not taking sides that they lash out against both Good and Evil without distinguishing between [[FriendOrFoe friend and foe]]. This usually takes the form of always siding with the underdog; the moment one side gains the upper hand, they'll pull a FaceHeelTurn (or a HeelFaceTurn) to make sure both sides are 'equal'. This can lead to a very [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder unreliable fellow]] and a WildCard whose predictably unpredictable morals lead his former allies to cut him down despite his [[WhatIsEvil protests that he was only following his heart]].

* Nix from the tabletop game of ''Anime/QueensBlade'' isn't the stupid one; rather her magical stave, the Funikura, is essentially an unstable piece of work that can either destroy a village or kill the evil leader of said village that she was actually aiming at. Needless to say, she [[IncrediblyLamePun sticks]] with it.

* In ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'' it is perfectly possible to be Stupid Neutral. One of the better examples is that you can raise the flying temple of Black Doom. Then you can quite easily work your way to a level where you have the option to bring it crashing back down again, orr you can try to stop it from rising, and then go on to keep it airborne. Overall, it's easier to be Stupid Neutral than not to be, since once you're on the Hero or Dark path, you can only complete missions for that alignment or Neutral ones, and the Neutral ones are much easier, often requiring only getting to the end of a level.

not remotely this trope

* In ''TabletopGame/BattleTech'' there is a pseudo-religious movement called Omniss who follow a Luddite-like style and reject any form of technology that encourages war. In a galaxy that is dominated by armies of HumongousMecha this is pretty dumb, and their homeworld was an easy target for the techno-religious cult of the Word of Blake.

Reads more like a criticism of the games than an intentional use of the trope. Would fit better as Fridge Horror or Esoteric Happy Ending or some similar YMMV trope.

* ''Franchise/ShinMegamiTensei'': The Neutral Alignment in these games frequently serves as the GoldenEnding due to its abundance of happy imagery and its messages of hope and the greatness of humanity, [[CrapsaccharineWorld and that's by design]]. The neutral alignment in most games is far closer to this trope once you look past the surface of what you're being shown. Neutral in SMT is the equivalent of using a potted plant to cover up a water stain that is actively rotting the foundation. People need something to believe in that is greater than themselves, whether it be God or Demons. A world where humans are left to govern their own fates invariably becomes a breeding ground ripe for Chaos and Law to take over.
