A standard of teen Sit Coms and dramas, the Six Student Clique is an ensemble that has members fall into standard teen archetypes. This was particularly common in The Nineties, so it sometimes overlaps with FiveTokenBand.
Six is a good number because it gives plenty of choices for Shipping without going into Loads and Loads of Characters. And with three boys and three girls, you have the option of CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds. Or not.
Using the Trope Codifier, Saved by the Bell, the characters are:
* Guys:
** The Head Zack. Usually but not always the main character, if there is one. Clever but BookDumb, he uses his brain to get what he wants. He can go from being a StandardizedLeader to being similar to The Muscle to having a bit of TheAce or Schemer in him. Often the DeadpanSnarker, or another similar role that lets him use his mouth to get out of trouble.
** The Muscle Slater. He has a bod, and he's not afraid to flaunt it. Girls swoon at his passing. And yet, he still hangs out with Zack. May or may not be BookDumb.
** The Quirk Screech. He's usually depicted as a nerd, though there are some exceptions. Very smart, but not very world-savvy. Usually talks in a high squeaky voice. Sometimes has aspects of the WackyGuy. Most likely to be the CloudCuckooLander. In rare cases, trades off roles with the Head to avoid the latter becoming TheGenericGuy.
* Girls:
** The Pretty one Kelly (though it is difficult to make hard distinctions). She is the beauty of the group. She's the one Zack and Slater usually fight over. Sometimes surprises people by having a lot of brains. Sometimes, she's a ditzy chick. The key is that she's considered attractive by the rest of the cast. Using hair color metaphors, she's most likely to be the DumbBlonde, though actual blonde hair is not a requirement, and neither is stupidity.
** The Smart one Jessie. As smart as Screech, but without the quirks. Most likely to freak out at the prospect of getting TheBGrade. Often a SoapBoxSadie and/or a StrawFeminist. If the school has a student council, she's the ClassRepresentative or the StudentCouncilPresident. In hair color metaphors, she's most likely to be the BrainyBrunette.
** The Wild one Lisa. Okay, Lisa usually isn't very wild, but there is that fashion obsession... And she always got the best one-liners. Usually, this slot will be reserved for a girl who is either as quirky as Screech (comedies) or a really wild child (dramas). The key is that she's independent and makes her own rules, whether that be as Lad-ette, the GranolaGirl, TheFashionista, or the BikerBabe. In hair color metaphors, she's most likely to be the FieryRedhead. In the musical chair world of cast pairings, she usually lines up with Screech, but rarely dates him. Or even likes him.
Sometimes a seventh character can be added usually an upperclassman to bring either a Foil foil to the main clique (comedy) or a teenaged Obi Wan (drama). Stories attempting realism may avoid exaggerating these personality traits too much, under the assumption that kids that different generally don't hang around each other in real life.
This is the standard version, although variations do occur. The main thing is to fill all six roles. Similarly to the FiveManBand, each individual role is usually the same gender as above, but none of them are AlwaysMale or AlwaysFemale. Anywhere from one to six members can be Gender Flipped (see "Gender Variations").
Another common variation is to have six adult friends who are not in school with the same roles (see "Adult Versions"). In RealLife, this is where people of different interests are more likely to spend time together, although television is more likely to show these groups in school.
Keep in mind that a Six Student Clique can be either a gender variation or an adult version. Although it is possible for a group of six friends to be both and still fill the same roles, such groups would be a case of SquarePegRoundTrope, and are not listed here.
