* In ''Film/Paddington2014'', Paddington is searching for Montgomery Clyde. The final "M. Clyde" address on his list is 36 Hetchlays Rd., but when he gets there the man who answers has never heard of an M. Clyde. It turns out that he was at 39 Hetchlays Road, the door number having flipped around, and the actual 36 was the right address.

* ''VisualNovel/NineHoursNinePersonsNineDoors'' revolves around a set of bracelets numbered from 1-9, but not everything is as it seems:
** Late in the game, a #0 bracelet is introduced, but it acts as if it were #6. [[spoiler:It's actually the letter O.]]
** Immediately following this, one character theorizes that [[spoiler:June's #6 bracelet is actually a 9, which allows her to open any of the doors in the game]], which in context implies that [[spoiler:Santa's #3 bracelet marks him as [[BigBad Zero]].]] This theory is mostly correct, [[spoiler:but it's the other way around. Santa is the real #9, and June is the real Zero.]]
** This comes to a head when [[spoiler:the final door with an apparent "9" on it turns out to be a "q". In Japanese, the number 9 can be pronounced as ''[[GoroawaseNumber kyuu]]'', while in English it's easy to mistake the two. This led to a slight change in the English translation where at the beginning, the rules for the Nonary Game were given to the players on paper notes which used a handwritten font that obscured the 'q is 9' twist whereas Zero gave the instructions verbally in the original Japanese version.]]

** ''VisualNovel/VirtuesLastReward'' has this for a few puzzles. The Crew Quarters for example has Sigma find some numbers labelled with shapes [[ItMakesSenseInContext after scratching off the clothes on a pinup poster]]. Two of the numbered shapes (6 and 9) are associated with a triangle and star which are upside-down on the poster, which alters the code for a locker.

* Music/JimiHendrix referenced this trope in his song "If 6 Was 9" from his album ''Music/AxisBoldAsLove''. In 1994, a group called The Beautiful People created a club-mix called "If 60s were 90s". Also the band Music/"Love" covered the track to good effect, and even had a minor hit with it.
