Can be used to make a PsychoticSmirk stand out or look creepier. Not to be confused with the CheekyMouth, an even more anatomically impossible expression in which the mouth is shown from a 3/4th perspective even though we are seeing the character's profile.

* ''[[https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/102609242 You can't forget about the devil]]'': {{Downplayed}} with [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica Homura]]'s side smile since it doesn't reach her ears but is still meant to unsettle the viewer and goes farther than a real-life person's would reach. Her eyes are also surrounded by some light shadows.

* ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'': Kamine and Simon smile like thus when they enter their own mechas for the first time.

Can be used to hide a PsychoticSmirk. Not to be confused with the even-more-anatomically-impossible CheekyMouth.

* ''Series/InspectorLynley'': Yumna gets an unconcealed look of glee on her face when she realises that Shala is [[spoiler: pregnant out of wedlock]]. This is part of the big BitchAlert that her introduction is.

* ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'': The OVA version does this a lot with the "face splitting smiles" of the original manga.

* 'Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'': Kamine and Simon smile like thus when they enter their own mechas for the first time.

* 'Manga/{{Inuyasha}}'': Sesshomaru starts molding a smile so big it threatens to split his face. And then the smile keeps going, becoming a fanged muzzle as he takes on his true dog-demon form.

* Many characters in ''Manga/CrayonShinChan'' do this, though Shin and Hima do it the most. For those two the smile isn't just visible from the side but ''[[ExaggeratedTrope directly behind them]].''
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'': Lust does this early on. Combined with PsychoticSmirk.

* Early in ''Manga/{{Inuyasha}}'', Sesshomaru smiles like this... and the smile keeps going, becoming a fanged muzzle as Sesshomaru takes on his true dog-demon form.
* Haruko in ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'' does this a lot.

* The OVA version of ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'' does this a lot with the "face splitting smiles" of the original manga.

* ''Manga/NausicaaOfTheValleyOfTheWind''. Kurotowa seems to have one perpetually plastered on his face. Ironically, Chris Sarandon seems to share that trait.
* Lust does this early on in ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist''. Combined with PsychoticSmirk.
* Plenty of characters in ''Manga/SoulEater'' get this, particularly Soul himself when the little demon gets in on the action.
* Both Kamina and Simon both do this the course of ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann,'' especially when they each both first get in their own mecha.
* Tora's default expression in ''Manga/UshioAndTora'', both happy and angry.

* The semi-animated opening credits to the 1960s TV series ''Series/Batman1966''.

* ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'' does this all the time, especially with the Jägermonsters.

* Toph in ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' uses this whenever she's about to do something impressive.

Even when a character is facing away from the viewer and only a narrow part of the side of the face is visible, facial expressions are still apparent, especially a sneaky smile that crawls up the cheek and almost reaches the ear. Real flesh-and-blood humans are anatomically incapable of this, but drawn characters suffer no such limitations.
