NamingATrope can be difficult. Generally, there is a trade-off between descriptive naming and clever naming, as many clever names only make sense to members of a particular fanbase. This page is here as an archive of names that were just a little bit too obscure to stay, too easy to misinterpret, too similar to an unrelated trope, not sounding neutral enough, or otherwise deemed unworthy.

Trope names based on a character (or other reference to a specific work) have fallen out of fashion, because [[PopCulturalOsmosisFailure not everyone watches the same shows]]. Some other common themes in renames are:
* Titles based on a character's name, but not making it clear [[OneMarioLimit which character with that name was meant]].
* EverythingsWorseWithSnowclones, so they're used less and less nowadays. Notable example: the [[EverythingsBetterWithIndexes "Everything's better with..."]] titles.
* TropeDecay, where an otherwise appropriate name was being used "wrong", constantly. Eventually it becomes clear that the real demand is for the "wrong" use. Notable example: MomentOfAwesome used to be "''Crowning'' Moment of Awesome", but it wasn't being used for single superlative moments.
* Using "Trope" as a placeholder.
* Tropes that had the same name as a work that later got an article.
* Names that simply don't indicate what the trope is all about. Especially if it suggests something unrelated to most people.
* And then there are titles that [[NeedsABetterTitle nobody ever really liked, even the original author]].

Recommended for children aged 12 and below This is the most light hearted and sweetest thing I have ever read. This manga truly lets us know that what kind of beautiful kindness humans are capable of. Waita Uziga is now my role model and I will try my best to be like the good characters in this good manga. The best character is probably the president of America, he was kind enough to have sex with a new born(Not many people are capable of this kind of kindness "BABY FUCK, BABY FUCK!!!!! IT'SSS AWWRIGHTTT!!!~~~~~" It's AWWRIGHTTT alright) and then give it teh best death evur!11!1! Death by being blended by a blender!!11!!1(I WANT TO DIE LIKE THAT) Unfortunately for him no good deed goes unpunished and he died for YOUR sins. Also the tile should be renamed to the "Mai-Chan's Wonderfully Incredible Awesometastic Life". OH Mai-chan how I envy you!!!!!!!I guess she kind of deserved the death she had at the end. It's not good if you want to get aroused, you'll become asexual if see it's horrible and disgusting sex scenes and you wont be able to eat food again evur! so just turn the sex scenes off or if you want that this is not the game for you and if you do get aroused tear your genitals off and eat them because there's something very wrong with you. Poor king Aurthur was turned into a slutty girl so he could have sex with a perverted hero wannabe lozer who's sadly immortal and doesn't pay for his stupid decisions and comes back to life for more stupidity. Stupid Shirou(whatever his name is) also calls poor Kirie who just wants to destroy the world evul! and doesn't call Medusa and Medea(Both of whom are actually evul! in real mythology and not perverted nasulogy) evul! even though they kill people for mana but there not really evul cause then shirou would have trouble fantasizing having sex with them. Medea even put poor king Aurthur in a dress and got aroused by it the evul lesbian!(Kirie never did any thing like that to anyone). Gilgamesh is supposed to be a douche so thats alright but he wants to rape poor king Aurthur! Thats just crazy!! also the Assassins that are Arabic have been turned evul and suck the most among all servants (even in fate zero assassin sucks) and want to become immortal for no reason. The only good thing is that there is a lot of raep(I like raep!!) but horribly they present raep AS A BAD THING!!!!! The former was renamed since people often kept using it as things intentionally made scary, which was High Octane Nightmare Fuel at the time, or things which they ''personally'' found scary, which really doesn't belong on a general-purpose Nightmare Fuel page. "High Octane" then assumed the old name "Nightmare Fuel" after suffering major TropeDecay.

* AlphaBitch was originally named "The Libby" after a character in ''Series/SabrinaTheTeenageWitch''. The former TropeNamer also failed the OneMarioLimit for sharing her name with characters from various other works.
* AmbitionIsEvil was named "Slytherin House", after the ''Literature/HarryPotter'' group and its typical portrayal. However, the trope itself was not about groups.
* AmicableExes was originally "Amicably Divorced".
* AnatomicallyImpossibleSex was "Artistic License - Sex Ed", and before that You Fail Sex Ed Forever. It got caught up in the mass rename of the "You Fail X Forever" tropes to "Artistic License - X", even though it didn't fit into the new naming scheme.
* AnatomyOfTheSoul was once "Dream Mirror". It is not about mirrors or about dreams per se. The old title required familiarity with ''Manga/SailorMoon'', using the name of a piece of Soul Anatomy unique to the work.
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie was changed from "You Are the Demons", since that was being misused to match the meme that uses it as TomatoInTheMirror.
* SugarWiki/AndTheFandomRejoiced used to be "Cue Cullen" after [[Film/{{Transformers}} the return of]] PeterCullen, a.k.a. [[TransformersGeneration1 Optimus]] [[TransformersTheMovie Prime]], to the role of the Autobot leader, with the aim of mirroring the name of Irish folk hero Cu Chulainn as a pun. Considering the emergence of [[Literature/{{Twilight}} another Cullen]] (and the presence of a [[BillCullen much older one]]), and not being very well-known outside the Transformers fandom, confusion was easy.
* AngerBornOfWorry was renamed from "Fear Leads to Anger" because the trope was fairly unrelated to the phrase from ''StarWars'' that served as its former name.
* AnimalAthleteLoophole used to be "Ain't No Rule", an overly general title that caused it to be routinely mistaken for its supertrope, LoopholeAbuse, rather than twisting the rules to get an animal into a sporting competition. The old name is now an alt-title for LoopholeAbuse.
* AnimalNemesis was renamed from "Pick on Someone Your Own Species" for clarity and in order to discourage misuse of the trope for examples that did not feature a human trying to take revenge on an animal.
* AnimationTropes used to be "Animated Trope". The index got renamed to what people would naturally call its contents in English.
* ArbitraryMaximumRange was once known as Space-Based Weapon Has Cutoff Range. Renamed because someone complained it was ''way'' too long. The funny thing is that the old one was launched for nearly a year before someone started complaining, even though the launcher [[NeedsABetterTitle asked for a better name]] in the YKTTW.
* ArcFatigue was "Are They Still on Namek", which is meaningless for people who didn't see [[DragonBallZ the show]].
* TheArcher was "Straight Arrow", until it was determined that Straight Arrow was better used metaphorically.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking was formerly known as "Bus Full of Nuns", after an incident on ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''. Renamed because it was too obscure, even within ''The Simpsons'' fandom.
* ArtisticLicense - X articles were once "You Fail X Forever" or "X Does Not Work That Way". Renamed to be more neutral.
** ArtisticLicenseShips was previously "Failed to Pay Shipping Charges", and was renamed to make it clearer what the trope was actually about.
** ArtisticLicenseMilitary was originally "You Fail Basic Training Forever" before it got custom titled into "Artistic License - Basic Training". However, because the trope covered more than just Basic Training and the term "Basic Training" failed to specify what type of training, it was changed to the current name.
* TheArtOfBraRemoval used to be "Caught on the Hooks", was renamed for being a bit too inscrutable.
* AsbestosFreeCereal used to be "Made with 100% Pure Grade-A Crap". The title was renamed for being too negative.
* AscendedExtra was formerly known as "Super Grape". Renamed mostly because Super Grape barely made sense even when explained.
* AscendedFanon was renamed from "Sure, Why Not?" because it sounded too similar to SureLetsGoWithThat and/or otherwise sounded like a stock phrase. The new title has the bonus of fitting in nicely with the other "ascended" tropes.
* AshesToCrashes was initially termed "Chekhov's Ashes". As well as being a rather overused snowclone, Chekhov's Gun style tropes need to be a side detail that becomes important later: too many examples have the ashes front and center. The new name gets the idea across directly.
* AsianGalWithWhiteGuy was originally know as "Me Love You Long Time". It was renamed due to the racist connotations of the phrase "Me Love You Long Time" and the trope namer not being an example.
* AssimilationPlot was originally known as "Instrumentality", named after a concept in ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', but renamed due to it being affiliated with spoilers for the series.
* AssumedWin was once "And the Winner Is...", which was unclear and led to the rename.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateInterruption was renamed from "Appropriate Conversation Interruption" to clarify the trope's meaning.
* AttackItsWeakPoint used to be known by the second part of the MemeticMutation, "For Massive Damage". The former was deemed more appropriate and less misleading. ForMassiveDamage is now a supertrope for all the ways to deal extra damage in video games.
* AuthorityInNameOnly was formerly "The King of Town", after a character from ''WebAnimation/HomestarRunner''. The trope was renamed for clarity.
* AwfulWeddedLife was formerly "No Exit" after Sartre's play of the same name, which wasn't even an example.

* BackstabbingTheAlphaBitch used to be "Knifing the Libby in the Back". It was renamed for the same reasons as AlphaBitch: a snowclone of a work-reliant character named trope.
* BaconAddiction was originally called "Everything's Better with Bacon" according to the discredited and completely unrelated EverythingsBetterWithIndexes snowclone family.
* BadassDecay was formerly known as "Spikeification", after Spike from ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''. It was changed because it required familiarity with the work to be understood (and there were debates over whether Spike was even an example), and because it could easily be assumed to refer to the process of making things spikey.
* BadassInANiceSuit was originally "Dressed to Kill". The word "dressed" was too vague, and the word "kill" was too specific, leading to the misinterpretation that this was about an assassin who wears fancy clothes or a costume when working, rather than being about any ol' badass who wears a business suit or tux to look [[SharpDressedMan sharp]] or professional.
* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork used to be "Big Damn Villains". Renamed because it was a snowclone of BigDamnHeroes and confusion with VillainousRescue.
* BadNewsIrrelevantNews used to be "Switching to Geico", which itself was shortened from "I Just Saved a Bunch of Money on My Car Insurance by Switching to Geico" because overly-long titles are hard to type right.
* BadWritingIndex was formerly "Bad Writing", which enjoyed massive misuse for complaining.
* BaitAndSwitchGunshot was renamed from "False Gunshot" to clarify the difference between it and StagedShooting.
* BaitAndSwitchTyrant was formerly "Bait-and-Switch Umbridge". After TheUmbridge was renamed to TyrantTakesTheHelm, Bait-and-Switch Umbridge was renamed for the sake of clarity.
* BarbieDollAnatomy used to be "Anime Anatomy", but was renamed because it is a) also common outside of anime and b) not the only kind of odd anatomy found in anime.
* BarefootCartoonAnimal was originally "Barefoot Funny Animal". It was renamed to match up with its {{Sister Trope}}s AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal, HalfDressedCartoonAnimal, and FullyDressedCartoonAnimal.
* BassoProfundo was originally named "The Dish Rattler". It was renamed due to failure to thrive after over a year.
* UsefulNotes/TheBechdelTest was formerly known as "Bechdels Rule". Arguments over whether the "rule" was being broken in various works got the name changed to emphasize the testing of a work. Now moved to UsefulNotes.
* BehindAStick used to be "Narrow Escape". It was renamed for having nothing to do with the common meaning of that phrase, or, for that matter, with escapes at all.
* BelligerentSexualTension was known for a while as "When a Jerk Loves a Tsundere". Before that, it was briefly known as "Tsunderes in Love" before it was decided as a misleading title since a jerk is not a Tsundere. ''Before that'', it used to be called a "Takahashi Couple", named for mangaka RumikoTakahashi (whose works are known for prominently featuring such relationships), a name dropped when specific references in titles fell out of fashion.
* BespectacledBastardBoyfriend used to be "Spectacled Sadist"; it was renamed because of confusion with FourEyesZeroSoul. Before that, it used to be "Kichiku Megane". That title gave no information to those outside the anime/manga fandom, or to those within the anime/manga fandom who hadn't come across the trope. It was also the name of a yaoi eroge VisualNovel, necessitating a rename to avoid confusion.
* BestHerToBedHer used to be "The Red Sonja". It was renamed due to misuse, and because the trope only constitutes one of the traits of the TropeNamer. 
* BigBadWannabe was "Evil Frog Who Wants to Be an Ox", a title that is quite awkward in a sentence due to its length, requires more typing than ideal, and is not immediately connected to its subject unless the reader knows the specific [[AnAesop Aesop]] and applies it correctly.
* BigBulkyBomb used to be "BFB". It was renamed for being a confusing snowclone of {{BFG}}.

* CasanovaWannabe used to be "The Leisure Suit Larry", from ''LeisureSuitLarry''. The too-close names led to roughly half the ''LeisureSuitLarry'' links mistaking the game for the trope. (Originally the trope name was actually the same as the game, without the definite article.) Also, Larry is not a CasanovaWannabe: he always ends up with many conquests. He has to be the ''opposite'', a KavorkaMan, for the games to work.
* CastFullOfPrettyBoys was originally "Blue Bish&#333;nen Ghetto", {{snowclone}}d from "Pink Bish&#333;jo Ghetto" (which itself [[ImprobablyFemaleCast has been renamed]]). It was renamed for not actually being the SpearCounterpart to that trope.
* CatastrophicCountdown used to be "Metroid Bomb", providing no information to those outside a very specific fandom. Even within the ''VideoGame/{{Metroid}}'' fandom, there are several bombs it could be, whereas this trope refers to the interesting kind of timebomb that causes the surrounding area to join in with sympathy explosions even before it goes off.

* TheChosenMany used to be "Green Lantern Corps". Slightly over half the uses of it assumed it was an article on the the fictional organisation rather than the trope centering on a band of chosen ones. Additionally, the old title didn't convey much to those unfamiliar with Green Lantern works. GreenLanternCorps now redirects to ''Comicbook/GreenLantern''.

It was changed because too many people misunderstood the intention of the trope (a character missing something obvious for comic effect) and would use it in an accusatory manner against anyone or anything they disliked or disagreed with.
* TheComicallySerious used to be "Unfunny". It was changed to more clearly indicate that the trope is about a serious-minded person being put into comical situations, and the contrast being PlayedForLaughs, rather than something or someone which tries to be funny and fails.
* CombinedEnergyAttack used to be "Spirit Bomb", named after a technique used by Goku in ''Manga/DragonBall''. Renamed because the trope namer caused the definition to be too narrow and some tropers thought the trope was "a weapon to attack someone's spirit" instead of "group pools their [[{{Mana}} energy]] for a attack or other purpose".
* ComplainingAboutPeopleNotLikingTheShow was originally named "Shit Flies from the Fans" for a couple days.
* ConfettiDrop was renamed from "Tickertape Parade" because the trope was about confetti/balloon drops on {{game show}}s, not tickertape parades. TickertapeParade is now about ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin.
* ConfirmationBias was renamed from "Preaching to the Choir" because the trope was using that phrase different than how it is commonly used and was encouraging misuse for the normal meaning.
* ConfusionFu used to be "Schrödinger Fu", which was named from Schrödinger's Cat -- a thought experiment from quantum mechanics where a macroscopic object is in two states simultaneously while unobserved. The idea was to suggest randomness via quantum randomness. But the trope is a fighting style built from erratic, unpredictable movements: the fighter isn't splitting into multiple versions which influence one another while unseen.
* ConstantlyCurious used to be "Elephant's Child". It was named after the main character in a short story by Kipling, and not very descriptive.
* ConsultingMisterPuppet used to be "Consulting Mr. Flibble" -- a name with little meaning to those unfamiliar with ''Series/RedDwarf''. The new name invokes the most common scenario directly.
* ConsummateLiar was renamed from "Liar Liar" to avoid confusion with the movie of the same name and as a side benefit to be more specifically connected to the trope.

The name was changed to "Truffaut Was Right", referring to a quote from French director FrancoisTruffaut about anti-war movies. * DontExplainTheJoke was very briefly "Yes Ted, That's the Joke" after an obscure ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' Ted Turner reference.
* Double Standard Rape: X were once Rape Is OK When. Renamed as part of an effort to remove "<obviously bad thing> is OK" names.
* DoUntoOthersBeforeTheyDoUntoUs was known as "Pandora Plea". It was renamed for clarity since Pandora's box does not clearly bring to mind using dangerous weapons.
* DownToTheLastPlay was formerly "The Casey Effect". It was changed because it implied the protagonist team always losing, and because it suggested that the trope was baseball-specific.

* GratuitousDiscoSequence was intially launched as "Everything's Funkier with Disco"; it was renamed as part of the general effort to get ride of "Everything's Better with" snowclones.

* IDoNotLikeGreenEggsAndHam was expanded from just "Green Eggs and Ham" to avoid confusion with the work.
* IgnorantOfTheirOwnIgnorance was previously "King of Pointland", named after the work ''{{Flatland}}''.
* IgnoredExpert was renamed from "The Jor-El" to clarify the trope and because the former name was a work-specific and character-named trope title.
* IgnoreTheDisability was "Sammy's Glass Eye", after a scene in ''AllInTheFamily''. Sammy, for Sammy Davis, Jr. has no relevance, it's all in the glass eye. But that still didn't convey the idea that it is trying to leave someone's disability[[hottip:*:or a similarly taboo topic related to a personal attribute, such as a very large nose]] out of a conversation (then making an embarrassing slip.)
* ILetGwenStacyDie once simply was "The Gwen Stacy". Changed because a) it's a character name and b) the trope, as the current name says, is about letting her die, not about the living Gwen Stacy.
* ImAHumanitarian used to be "Soylent Green Is People". This may confuse people who don't get the former joke.
* ImMelting used to be "What a World, What a World!"; it was changed because the original name [[ItMakesSenseInContext needed context in order to make sense]]. The new name comes from the same quote; specifically, the part with the context.
* ImminentDangerClue was originally named The Telltale Drapes, and then renamed, cut, and then sent back to YKTTW ''twice'' before being launched under a much clearer name.
* ImmortalitySeeker was renamed from "So You Want to Live Forever" in order to make it clear that the trope was about a character archetype rather than a SoYouWantTo page.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure was originally "Hourglass Hottie". Renamed because the old name led to misuse for any woman with an hourglass figure.
* ImposterForgotOneDetail was renamed from "Imposter Jamie Has No Accent" to avoid using a name that was work-specific and to help encourage uses of the trope that feature more than just accents.
* ImprobableAntidote was briefly "Baigar Is the Antidote".
* ImprobablyFemaleCast was "Pink Bish&#333;jo Ghetto" for a very long time. Anyone who didn't know what the word "bish&#333;jo" meant wouldn't understand the title. On top of that, it was a poor snowclone of the term "[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Ghetto pink ghetto]]", which aside from being a fairly obscure term to begin with, the actual definition of "pink ghetto" is the ''opposite'' of what the trope is about.
* ImproperlyPlacedFirearms was renamed from "I Know That Gun" in order to clarify the trope's meaning and decrease misuse for trivia and examples of prop guns being based on real guns.
* InactionSequence was formerly known as "Not So Fast", but it was easy to confuse with the mostly unrelated "Not So Fast Bucko" (which has itself since been merged with YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle). Spent some time as Midstrike Monologue in between.
* InadvertentEntranceCue was "Something Wicked This Way Comes" but it was being confused with the novel.
* INeedToGoIronMyDog used to be "Helicopter Sounds" after a ''Series/{{Friends}}'' scene. It was changed because the trope has nothing to do with helicopters nor sounds and the ''Friends'' reference itself didn't quite fit.
* IncestSubtext used to be "Incest Yay". Renamed due to [[ThatCameOutWrong sounding just plain wrong]] if you didn't recognize it as a bad snowclone of HoYay.
* InexplicablyAwesome was "The Frizzle". It was renamed due to being a character-named trope whose name was causing a great deal of confusion over what it actually meant.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals was originally "Nurse Jenny". Renamed due to its obscurity to anyone outside of the fandom (especially since it was actually a portmanteau of two ''different'' characters) and the misleading link to the various Nurse tropes.
* InfiniteOneUps was "One Up Sampo". There was slim to zero chance the reader would know one of the many, many meanings of the word "sampo" in ancient Finnish mythology is "mill".
* InformedObscenity was formerly "Snugglebunnies", after a gag in ''ComicStrip/BloomCounty'', which was too obscure.
* InnocentProdigy was renamed from "The Linus" since there are a number of possible character traits associated with [[ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}} Linus]] that are outside the specific definition of that trope.
* InnocuouslyImportantEpisode was "Midnight on the Firing Line" after the name of an episode in ''Series/{{Babylon 5}}'' which was an example. Outside that audience the phrase was opaque.
* TheInsomniac was originally "No Rest for the Wicked" -- a phrase that usually refers to people with a guilty conscience. The new name indicates it is all insomniacs, not just wicked ones.
* InspectorLestrade is a clarifying expansion of the original title, "Lestrade".
* InstantChucks was once "Sword Chucks", from ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater''. SwordChucks was MixAndMatchWeapon [[TheSameButMoreSpecific but with only two weapons]], but since ninety percents of examples were about ridiculous things made into nunchucks just by sticking a chain inbetween, it became specifically about that, with the title change to boot
* InstantWinCondition used to be "The Enemy Gate Is Down", after the quote from ''Literature/EndersGame''. Renamed because it doesn't necessarily relate to enemies, gates, or gates being down. Also, "down" referred to the direction, not "[[ItsGoingDown going down]]".
* IntellectuallySupportedTyranny was previously "Trahison des Clercs", but was renamed to clarify the meaning of the trope using an English term.
* IntentionalEngrishForFunny was formerly "Zero Wingrish", but the TropeNamer was actually an ''unintentional'' bad translation.
* IntendedAudienceReaction was originally "They Plotted a Perfectly Good Waste", an awkward snowclone of TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot, to which it had no relation.
* InterruptedCooldownHug was renamed from "Hulk's Cooldown Hug Corollary" in order to clarify the trope's meaning and to rid it of a unnecessary character-named title.

* InvoluntaryGroupSplit was renamed from "Rocks Fall Party Splits" in order to clarify that it's about all sorts of obstacles, not just rocks.
* InvoluntaryShapeshifter used to be called "Involuntary Shapeshifting", but the term was frequently misused for any arbitrary transformation (e.g: BalefulPolymorph) instead of a {{Shapeshifter}} who has no control over their own transformations.
* IReadItForTheArticles used to be known as "I Watch It for the Economics", at least partly based off a [[MemeticMutation online meme]] that arose from the anime ''LightNovel/SpiceAndWolf''. The original name was not general enough to describe the trope, though, hence the change. It helps that the current name is also a meme, but one much older and more widespread.

* {{Kiai}} was "Wryyyyyy" until someone noticed that it was impossible to remember how many "Y's" there were in the word (there are six).
* KidAppealCharacter was originally "The Bumblebee", after the ''{{Transformers}}'' character. Renamed for being a character-named trope.
* KlutzTheSurgeon was renamed from "Mulligan the Headsman" because the meanings of Mulligan and Headsman are not quite as obvious as Klutz and Surgeon to most people.

It was changed to Nudge Nudge to be a little more clear. The current name came about to point out that the trope is about the {{lampshad|e Hanging}}ing of {{Double Entendre}}s, not the entendres themselves.
* {{Landlord}} was formerly "The Kanrinin" from the Japanese term. It was renamed because it was GratuitousJapanese for a concept much further reaching than anime.
* LargeHamAnnouncer used to be called "Anything's Awesome with Announcers", which did not state what sort of announcer the trope covered.
* LateArrivalSpoiler was formerly "You Should Know This Already", in reference to how it would seem that only the creators considered recent plot revelations to no longer be spoilers. It was eventually renamed due to many, ''many'' tropers misusing it either by literally interpreting the title, or as an excuse to not use spoiler tags.
* LateToThePunchline used to be "Swiss Moment" from a relatively minor association of the Swiss with being slow to get jokes rather than the major associations with chocolate, money, cheese or neutrality.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips was previously known as "Little Black Dress" (since such characters "go with everything"). This was renamed since it has nothing to do with dresses and the fact that there were many male examples fitting the trope too. LittleBlackDress now covers ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin.
* LesserStar was originally "Garfunkel". Not only was it commonly misused as StuckInTheirShadow, it wasn't even an example.
* LightEmUp used to be "Light the Way". It was renamed since the old name was getting confused for ''literally'' lighting the way, not light as an elemental power.
* LightFlickerTeleportation was renamed from "Blackout Blink" to clarify the trope's meaning since "blackout" was being used in a non-traditional way in the old name.
* LikesOlderWomen used to be "Cake Eater". It was renamed to clarify what the trope means.
* LiteralMinded used to be called "Amelia Bedelia" after a character in an eponymous series of children's books. It was renamed because it was too obscure a title for too major a trope.
* LiteralSplitPersonality once lived its life as a trope named "Starfish Character", an ''Literature/{{Animorphs}}'' reference. A character was split into a Angry and a Wuss version of herself, after being cut in half... as a starfish.
* LittleBitBeastly was once known as "Kemonomimi". However, the former title was very hard to search. Before that it was named PettingZooPeople which became entirely a new trope.
* LittleGuyBigBuddy was formerly "Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot", characters from an old [[FeedTheKitty cartoon]]. The name was being used for the characters, and was also being mistaken for a trope about a dog and a cat, instead of a broad trope about a relationship between two people.
* LittleMissBadass was formerly known as "Badass Lolita". The name was changed due to the original's reference to a character with major unrelated connotations, and because "loli" hit some sort of filter and caused Google to refuse to support the page with ads.
* LittleMissSnarker was originally known as "The Ruri" (named after Hoshino Ruri of ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico''), but then it was changed to "Deadpan Loli". Now it has been renamed for the same reasons as the above trope.
* LoanShark was shortened from "All Devouring Black Hole Loan Sharks", the name of a company in ''{{Pikmin 2}}''.
* LondonGangster was called "Kray Winstone", the apparent first name actually being the surname of an iconic pair of RealLife London gangsters, the surname being of an actor whose performance was inspired by the Krays. Most tropers didn't get the two references and the examples include a variety of London Gangsters, not just [[TheDon Dons]] inspired by the Krays.
* LonelyFuneral was "Tragic Funeral" before. The previous title wasn't clear enough.
* LongingForFictionland was "Longing for Pandora" (after the setting of the movie ''Film/{{Avatar}}''). There was too much scope for confusion with the character from Greek myth / Pandora's box.
* LongLostUncleAesop was previously "Uncle Ned", a character reference (from ''FamilyTies'') nobody connected to and which obscured the point of the trope, leading to confusion with RememberTheNewGuy.
* LookBehindYou was "Hey, What's That?" Renamed in the dark days before punctuated titles, when apostrophes where frowned upon.
* LootDrama was "The Ridill". Which it was. Few people outside the ''FinalFantasy'' fandom will know of this sword -- but LootDrama in {{Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game}}s is fairly common and this is usual term for it. The term gives good clues to those outside this broader camp, too.
* LostInMediasRes once was "Hold Your Horses", where it wasn't that obvious that ''the author'' was meant.
* LoudnessWar was "Record of Loudness War". The old name was an awkward pun off of ''Roleplay/RecordOfLodossWar'' and there was no reason to use it over the pre-existing term.
* LovableAlphaBitch was "Lovable Libby" and renamed for the same reasons as The Libby -- essentially for being a (work knowledge dependent) character named trope.
* LovedOnesMontage used to be called "Nakamania". Renamed for being opaque, especially after the rename of {{Nakama}} to TrueCompanions and for not thriving.
* LovelyAssistant was once "The Vanna" after the hostess from ''WheelOfFortune''.
* LoverTugOfWar used to be "Tug Lover War". It was not widely used, though it's a moderately common trope, so it was given a clearer/less bizarre name.
* LovesMyAlterEgo was formerly "The Lois Lane". Not only was the first non-descriptive, many thought it was a separate trope, and many linked to it as Lois Lane the character.
* LyricsVideoMismatch was renamed from "Narrative Non Sequitur" to clarify its meaning as a trope exclusive to music videos.

* MakeRoomForTheNewPlot was renamed from "Got a Bigger Problem Now" to clarify the trope's meaning and to rid it of a line of dialogue title. 
* MalignedMixedMarriage was "Mixed Marriage". It was changed because people kept using the old name for interracial relationships in general.
* ManBitesMan was once "Take a Bite Out of Crime" from an unrelated PublicServiceAnnouncement where it was the slogan of [=McGruff=] the Crime Dog. Didn't make it clear who was biting who and gave the misleading impression it was something to do specifically with crimefighting.
* ManChild was originally named "The Oscar" after a character from ''Series/ArrestedDevelopment'' who didn't even fit the trope.
* MandatoryMotherhood was once "Childfree Is Not Allowed". It was renamed because childfree is not synonymous with "childless"; it is the name of a somewhat controversial movement. The old name caused some misuse, and carried unnecessary connotations that other, clearer names could avoid.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy was originally "Pink Boy, Blue Girl". It was changed due to the old name being misused as an inversion of PinkGirlBlueBoy.
* MeaningfulEcho was once "You Are with Me", after a line from ''HarryPotter/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrince''. FanMyopia at its finest.
* MeddlesomePatrolman was formerly "The Longtarin" after a character from ''GastonLagaffe'' which few people knew about.
* MediaScrum was formerly just "Scrum". It was renamed because Scrum is broader term and the media version isn't the predominant use of it.
* MenBuyFromMarsWomenBuyFromVenus was renamed from the even longer and harder to remember "Men Are from Candy Bars Women Are from Shaving Products".
* TheMenInBlack was MIB. We generally don't like acronym trope names unless the spelled out title contains profanity.
* MetronomicManMashing was formerly "Metronomic Mook Massacre", but was renamed because it had little to do with {{mooks}} or massacres.
* MergedReality was renamed from "Make a Better World" because it was being misused for characters who want to make the world a better place rather than for examples of parallel worlds being merged.
* MessyPig was originally titled "Everything's Messier with Pigs", a snowclone of the discredited EverythingsBetterWithIndexes family. As with several similarly named tropes, the earlier name encouraged a list of all pigs regardless of portrayal.
* MinigameZone was "Golden Saucer", after the amusement park in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''. It got renamed because the true name is Gold Saucer, and the name wasn't working well enough (not enough wicks and inbounds).
* MinimalistCast was renamed from "Omega Cast" to help encourage use for an underused trope and to clarify its meaning.
* MinorCrimeRevealsMajorPlot was renamed from "Gonna Need a Bigger Warrant" for clarity and to more directly include non-official investigations within an otherwise common trope that was being underused.
* MinorFlawMajorBreakup used to be "Man Hands", in-reference to a ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' episode that used the trope. This was an opaque title; no indication of what was happening, nor why.
* MismatchedEyes used to be "Boat Lights" -- a nice visual image but too many people didn't know boats have different lights on each side and too many people didn't make the link between lights and eyes -- so the old title was opaque.
* MistakenForPedophile was once "Little Kid Lover"
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal was originally "Help Face Turn". It was renamed for being a BadSnowclone of HeelFaceTurn that was entirely misleading; it sounded more like a trope about a minion making a HeelFaceTurn because TheHero helped them rather than because their boss [[BadBoss mistreated them]].
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold was once named "The Boo Radley" from a character in ''ToKillAMockingbird''. The name provided no context and was opaque to those unfamiliar with the work. To those who intended to read the book it acted as a spoiler.
* MockGuffin was previously "Golden Helmet of Mambrino". Renamed for being too obscure and non-indicative.
* TheModernAgeOfComicBooks was formerly known as "Modern Age". It was renamed because not only did it need to be changed to match the new names for Golden Age and Dark Age, but there were also references to the concept of a Modern Age independent of comic books.
* {{Moe}} was formerly "Moe Moe" because of a now-obsolete minimum on how long trope names could be. It was changed to {{Moe}} because that is the correct term for the trope and less confusing (except for all the Western-media characters named "Moe"). As they say, mo' moe, mo' problems.
* MoeStare, which easily rolls off the tongue, used to be "Manic Pixie Dream Girl Stare", which... doesn't.
* MomentOfAwesome was "Crowning Moment of Awesome" (and shortly before, "Awesome Moments"). Renamed due to trope decay, as the name implied a singled out epic moment for a character (or work), and instead characters/works were receiving entire ''lists'' of said moments. Likewise, the snowclones [[FunnyMoments Crowning Moment of Funny]], and [[HeartwarmingMoments Crowning Moment of Heartwarming]].
* MoneyMakingShot was renamed from "Money Shot" due to the latter's porn connotations.
* MoonLogicPuzzle used to be "See the Sailboat", after a Magic Eye puzzle in the movie ''{{Mallrats}}''. Since it isn't about sailboats and the somewhat obscure reference leads to a figurative link with {{Moon Logic Puzzle}}s (something you stare at fruitlessly), it was changed to a descriptive title.
* MoralEventHorizon was formerly known as "Rape the Dog", but had to be renamed due to it being treated as KickTheDog, [[TheSameButMore But More Evil!]] (Also, TVTropes is the wrong place for bestiality. [[ButYouScrewOneGoat Usually]].)
* MoreFriendsMoreBenefits used to be known as "Mambo Intimacy 5", but was renamed for clarity because the original name was obscure and somewhat unrelated to video games anyway.
* MrAltDisney was formerly "Dis Not". It was renamed for clarity, partly to make it more apparent that the trope is about a parody of WaltDisney the person.
* MrFanservice used to be "Estrogen Brigade Bait". It was changed because it's supposed to be a SpearCounterpart to MsFanservice and kept getting misused to mean any male character that the troper thought was sexy. Also, not everyone attracted to men produces estrogen.
* MrsHypothetical spent maybe a few hours as "Thinking of Changing Her Name to His" before being changed. The name it launched under was intolerably wordy and didn't quite outline the general concept.
* MrViceGuy used to be "[=McDuck=]", but was renamed since it was unclear, lacked "The", and was being linked to by tons of articles referencing the character rather than the trope.
* MulticulturalAlienPlanet used to be "Lots of Planets Have a North". Created around a line from ''Series/DoctorWho'' that wasn't an example for the sake of the reference, this misleading title suggested it was AliensOfLondon i.e. aliens with real life accents rather than, well, a MulticulturalAlienPlanet -- an alien planet with distinct ethnicities, cultures, and traditions. Misuse followed.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable started life as "Last Dance With Mary Jane", then was changed to NormaBates to to make it clear that it covered more than necrophilia, then was changed again when it was pointed out that "Norma Bates" was misleading to people who were familiar with ''{{Psycho}}'', opaque to people who weren't, and was a spoiler, to boot.
* MundaneMadeAwesome was originally "What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome". It was changed to be clearer, and to get away from the tired [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAnIndex What Do You Mean, It's Not X?]] snowclone family.
* MuppetCameo was renamed from "Everything's Better with Muppets" to cut ties with the discredited and only tenuously connected EverythingsBetterWithIndexes snowclone family.
* MutantDraftBoard used to be called "The Corps Is Mother", after the slogan of the infamous Psi Corps from ''Series/{{Babylon 5}}''. The original title was another victim of the move away from referencing specific series.

* NakedFreakOut used to be "Unmentionable BSOD", implying a connection between the trope and HeroicBSOD that wasn't really evident.
* TheNameIsBondJamesBond used to be called "Surname First Name Surname". It was changed because the use of technical words (forename, surname) made the trope title unwieldy. This is one of the few trope names that was changed from something extremely generic to a specific series reference.
* NarratingTheObvious was "This Just In", which was easily confused for being a {{News Trope|s}}. The latter is now used as such.
* NaughtyNurseOutfit was "Night Nurse" but kept getting confused for a character type instead of a costume trope.
* NestedStory was once "Push Pop Plot" after the Computer Science abstraction known as a stack. Most readers do not know how push and pop operations apply to a stack and so found the title opaque. Of the few who did make a link, some made the link to ''candy'' rather than data structures. One wonders what a hash table would conjure.

* NewRulesAsThePlotDemands used to be named "The Catapult Turtle Flying Castle Gambit", named from ''WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries''. Renamed because the old name was clumsy, hard to remember, and unintuitive. * NightmareFuelStationAttendant used to be "Nightmare Dispenser", and before that it was... NightmareFuelStationAttendant. * PercussiveMaintenance was formerly "Fonzarelli Fix" after a ''HappyDays'' character, but revelations of the widespread use of the term Percussive Maintenance in RealLife made the new name far more viable and less dependent on a reference.
* PerfectPlayAI was renamed from "[=MK Walker=]" to discourage non-video game uses of the trope and to clarify its meaning.
* PeripheryHatedom was formerly "The Barney" after a prominent example: the eponymous character from ''Series/BarneyAndFriends''. * PersonaNonGrata was "Banned from Argo". After some discussion, it was changed due to the TropeNamer being obscure and the new name being the technical term for the trope.
* PersonAsVerb was originally "I Pulled a 'Weird Al'". Renamed because this trope wasn't something Music/WeirdAlYankovic was particularly known for.

* PlayableMenu was once called "Walk Over Here for Options", but was renamed for clarity.

* ShapeshifterModeLock was expanded from simply "Mode Lock" to help clarify that it is specific to {{Shapeshifting}}, and to prevent future confusion with BalefulPolymorph and/or PowerIncontinence. It was being misused for these in approximately 25% of wikilinks.
* ShoddyKnockoffProduct used to be "POP Station" after an example of the trope. Not something ordinary readers could be be expected to know. The new name tells it as it is.
* ShooOutTheNewGuy was once "The Poochie", after the character from a ShowWithinAShow in ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''. Renamed for clarification.
* ShopliftAndDie was once known as "Easily Angered Shopkeeper" before it was renamed to clarify that action was specifically caused by player shenanigans. Even before that, it was named "Izchak's Wrath" after one of the shopkeepers of ''NetHack''.

* TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks was formerly known as "Silver Age". It was renamed because not only did it need to be changed to match the new names for Golden Age and Dark Age, but there were also references to the concept of a Silver Age independent of comic books.
* SimultaneousWarningAndAction was once Stand Back Hello, which required knowledge of ''VideoGame/HalfLife'' to understand.
* SixthRangerTraitor was once "Sixth Column". It was an exact duplicate of a work title. The work was not an example. The protagonist refers to the resistance movement as a Sixth Column: loyalists -- the opposite of a traitorous fifth column. The new title clarifies the SixthRanger reference and avoids the indirect fifth column conflation by just saying they are a traitor.
* SkywardScream was originally known as "The Khan". It was changed because all other "The X" tropes were character tropes (the trope is a [[CameraTricks camera trick]]), and the TropeNamer [[ThisIndexIsNotAnExample wasn't even an example of the trope]]. As a result, TheKhan is now a redirect for SayMyName.
* SlaveCollar used to be called "Chain of Command". * SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear was originally "Wutai Theft", after an incident in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''. Renamed to avoid the specific reference and because the trope is general enough to include cases that aren't deliberate theft.
* SolveTheSoupCans was "Soup Cans" after a puzzle in ''TheSeventhGuest'' where a message must be spelt out using soup cans. It was renamed to give the sense of a weird puzzle to those unfamiliar with the reference.
* TheSnackIsMoreInteresting was renamed from CavalierConsumption to be more clear, with AppetiteForApathy as an additional redirect.
* TheSomethingForce was formerly "Troper Force", but was renamed to not use the placeholder "troper".

* WakeUpFighting was once called "Rude Awakening". Another case of taking a commonly used phrase and using it as something that ''wasn't'' the trope, causing underuse and misuse.
* WakingUpElsewhere was renamed from "Waking Up in Vegas" because the trope was much broader than the former name made it seem... and because the TropeNamer wasn't even an example.
* WantsAPrizeForBasicDecency was once "Virtue Is Its Own Reward", which sounded too much like another name for ThinkNothingOfIt.
* WatchItStoned used to be called "Everything's Better on Drugs", which implied a connection to the unrelated and discredited EverythingsBetterWithIndexes family.
* TheWatson was formerly both "The Sarah Jane" ''and'' "The Rick", named after a companion from ''Series/DoctorWho'' and a character from ''MagnumPI'', respectively. They were merged and renamed because "The Rick" is just flat out too vague, the distinction between the two was too subtle, and Watson from ''SherlockHolmes'' is well-known outside of ScienceFiction and Eighties TV fandom.
* WaxingLyrical was formerly "Don't Sing Along If You Don't Know the Words". It was changed because it was too long and not at all descriptive of what the trope was actually about.
* WebcomicTime has been itself for quite some time, but "That Night Felt Like Months" was lumped with it.
* WhatWereTheySellingAgain was once known as "Distracted by the Shiny". It was changed because the trope name led people to believe this was a trope about characters being distracted by shiny things, which AttentionDeficitOohShiny now covers.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad was originally "Cat's in the Cradle"; the new title is a lyric from the song which also provided the name of the old title. It was changed to clarify the meaning of the trope.
* WhiteMagicianGirl was originally "Staff Chick", which underwent ''lots'' of misuse with people adding examples that played the role of ''healers'' but didn't match the personality (you might be looking for HealingHands, TheMedic or WhiteMage for more general cases) or worse, people assuming the ''staff'' to be the crucial aspect of this trope. The new name also matches this trope's BlackMage counterpart, BlackMagicianGirl.
* WickedWeasel was originally titled "Everything's Better with Weasels", a snowclone of the discredited EverythingsBetterWithIndexes family. As with several similarly named tropes, the earlier name encouraged a list of all weasels regardless of portrayal.
* WifeHusbandry was originally titled "[[Literature/TaleOfGenji Hikaru Genji]] Plan" but was changed since the latter was too obscure to those not knowing said work.
* WimpFight used to be called "Zero Chops".
* {{Wimpification}} was originally called "Ukefication"; it was changed to remove GratuitousJapanese and because the trope was not actually about relative positions in a relationship as much as the stereotypes that went with them.
* WindowsOfTheSoul was originally "She Then Saw the Glint of Triumph in His Eyes", which was too long and unwieldy.
* WordSaladTitle is now the primary name for "Super Punk Octo Pudding Gas Mark Seven" instead of a redirect. This is because the original name was too hard to remember and spell, couldn't be used in a sentence, and didn't make all that much sense (which was both a problem and [[ThisTropeNameReferencesItself the entire point]]).

* YouAreTooLate was formerly "Thirty Five Minutes Ago" after a line from a [[ComicBook/{{Watchmen}} comic book series]]. It was renamed because it was not only completely opaque and unsearchable, but also a major spoiler.
* YouJustToldMe was originally named "Rumplestiltskin Ploy"; renamed because the former TropeNamer is not an example.
* {{Youkai}} was formerly "Yokai", with the latter now redirecting to the former, because the latter is wrong according to standard transliteration conventions.
* YouKnowWhoSaidThat was renamed from "And Now You Know the Rest of the Story" because the trope name was an obscure reference that didn't even fit the definition.
* YoungConqueror was renamed from "The Alexander" because the name "Alexander" alone was not distinctive enough to clearly refer to Alexander the Great. Further, while AlexanderTheGreat is noted for conquering a large part of the (known to him) world, the fact that he started out as a teenager is less widely known.
* YourMom was originally named "Yo Mommas a Trope", which was perhaps the ugliest use ever of the word "trope" as a placeholder in a trope name.
* YuriFan was formerly "Yuri Fanboy". It was changed because too many of the examples and TroperTales were female for the male-gendered title to make any sense as the primary title, though the original title was kept as a redirect.
