* ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry'' EVERYONE who isn't Franchise/DonkeyKong, Diddy, Cranky, Funky or Dixie (And almost all the animal friends). Candy, Swanky, Kiddie, Chunky, Lanky, Tiny, and Wrinkly [[note]] though likely justified that she's a ghost now [[/note]], even King K. Rool is long replaced. All just vanished. Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo still owns the characters; they just stopped appearing outside of collectible trophies in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros''.

** Fortunately, 42 villagers would later return for City Folk and all (but 2) absent special characters return. 24 villagers would also return in New Leaf, including the return of Porter. 4 villagers would also return in the spin-off game, Happy Home Designer.

*** More villagers exclusive to the original game and e+ were found in the data of Happy Home Designer, but they have not returned yet.

** Even characters introduced after the original game aren't safe from this trope. Kaitlin doesn't appear in New Leaf since her daughter, Katie is now old enough to travel on her own. Since the Acorn Festival was a one-off holiday like many holidays introduced in Wild World, Cornimer has only ever appeared in Wild World (Though it's possible that he's just Tortimer wearing an acorn mask. Plus, there is a machine modeled after him in a minigame in New Leaf). Champ is the only villager not from the original game or its updates to ever be cut, being absent from New Leaf. Coincidentally, the identical-looking Porter returns in New Leaf, leading to theories that Champ and Porter are the same person. (This, however, has been debunked since the Wii U app Animal Crossing Plaza shows that Porter's birthday is completely different from Champ's, so maybe Champ is that very minor monkey conducting the train?)

*** Frillard, Dr. Shrunk's mentor, has only ever appeared in City Folk. Dr. Shrunk sometimes says in New Leaf that he misses him, implying that he may have passed away after City Folk. (I mean, Frillard once implied he was 110 years old)

** Wisp actually had this trope happen to him twice. After he didn't return in Wild World, he returned in City Folk, only to not return again in New Leaf. (However, there will be an update for New Leaf that will return him)

* Since Wild World was for a system that was much less powerful than the system its predecessor was on, only 132 out of the 318 villagers from the original ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'' had to be cut, most of them never making it past their first game. Even some special characters didn't make a return to Wild World.

* Several ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'' characters have disappeared over time, never making it past their first game. It's most apparent in the first installment of the series, both the UsefulNotes/{{Nintendo 64}} and UsefulNotes/NintendoGameCube one. It seems they were put into storage, so the developers would have extras on hand for later installments. As a couple villagers in ''New Leaf'' haven't been seen since the original, while others from earlier games have been removed. (Whom we'll likely see again in next game or so)
