The first novel, ''Pretty Little Liars'', was released in October 2006. It was followed by ''Flawless'' and ''Perfect'' in March and August 2007, ''Unbelievable'' and ''Wicked'' in May and November 2008, ''Killer'' in June 2009, and ''Heartless'' in January 2010. An eighth installment titled ''Wanted'' was in June 2010. ''Twisted'', its ninth installment was released on July 5th, 2011.

There is now a television series based on the books that began airing on ABC Family in the summer of 2010. Because of good ratings, it was renewed for a second season.
----
!!Tropes:
* ActorAllusion: Emily and her mom are discussing Aria's hair in the pilot when this line comes up
--> "What kind of mother would I be if I let you run around [[WizardsOfWaverlyPlace looking like a goth]]?"
* AdaptationDyeJob: Spencer, Emily, Melissa and Mona are brunettes in the television series, and Hannah and Kate are blondes.
* {{Adorkable}}: Lucas
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: On the TV series, Caleb is Hanna's new love interest.
** Toby, in the eyes of Rosewood - which is the excuse Melissa and Ian use for discouraging Spencer from associating with him, while Veronica simply says it looks bad and Spencer is a suspect in the public mind as well as Toby. The audience, as well as Emily and Spencer, and therefore Hanna and Aria, who trust their friends' judgment, have seen a Toby who is sensitive, funny, well-read and living with one of the worst stepsisters ever. Also, like Farscape's John Crichton and Stargate SG-1's Daniel Jackson, a male who has been raped by a female who is NOT okay about it. It's hard to distinguish this from Toby's 'normal' personality, but he doesn't try to date or socialize - Emily became friends with him after he protected her from Ben and Spencer sought him out to get information on Jenna. Toby also displays a fairly intense reaction to Jenna - he's afraid of her and feels that she has more influence in their family.
* AlternateContinuity: The TV series due to a combination of AdaptationDecay and AdaptationExpansion.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Emily in the TV series (her actress is Filipino/white).
* BatmanGambit: In "Through Many Toils, Troubles, and Snares", the girls pull off a rather impressive one on A by [[spoiler: pretending to fight and quarrel with each other over fake evidence of A's identity, leading A to approach Emily with a deal.]] It doesn't quite work out like they'd hoped, since they don't learn A's identity, but they do come away with A's cell phone. A is understandably disturbed by this development.
* BettyAndVeronica: Emily dates Maya (Veronica), Paige (Veronica) and Samara (Betty). She also has feelings for Ali (who seems to be a mixture of the two)
* BiTheWay: Trista.
** Maya fits this on TV series because she [[spoiler:dated a boy while she was at juvie camp before she returned.]]
** Arguably Alison fits this trope as well given that [[spoiler:in both the books and the show she occasionally pursues romantic encounters with Emily, who is in love with her]].
* BrainyBrunette: Lucas, and Spencer in the show.
* BlondesAreEvil: Kate on the television series.
* BrotherSisterIncest[[spoiler: Melissa and Jason who made out. It was later revealed that they share a father on the TV series.]]
* ButNotTooBlack: Maya in the TV series.
* ColdOpening
* CreatorCameo: Sara Shepard, the books' author, appears as a substitute teacher for Ezra in the episode “Please Do Talk About Me When I’m Gone.”
* DawsonCasting: All four main girls are played by actresses who are between the ages of 20 and 25. Maya is the most {{egregious}} example as the character is 16 but the actress, Bianca Lawson, is 31.
** Averted with Alison, who is played by 14-year-old Sasha Pieterse.
** Tammin Sursok, who plays blind high school student Jenna, is 28.
* DeadPersonConversation: Hanna has one with Alison while she is in the hospital, and then another in season two of the show at her therapist's encouragement. The latter is somewhat of a CrowningMomentOfAwesome for Hanna. Subverted in the books [[spoiler: because Alison was really alive at the time and visited Hanna when she was in a state between waking up and sleeping.]]
** Emily has one of these with Alison in the second season after passing out.
* DirectedByCastMember: Chad Lowe (Byron, Aria's dad) directed "Touched By An 'A'-ngel."
* DirtyCop: [[spoiler: Garrett in the show is as well.]]
* DisappearedDad: Averted in the case of Aria in the show, as her father refuses to leave the family when he and Ella separate.
* EstrogenBrigadeBait: Inverted. Don't think that male viewers haven't noticed the four leads justify a name change to ''Gorgeous Little Liars''. Mona, Jenna, and the foursome's mothers aren't exactly hard on the eyes either.
* [[spoiler: EvilTwin: In ''Wanted'', Ali reveals that she had a twin, Courtney, who was evil. However, it turns out that she's just as evil.]]
* FairCop: Darren and Garrett
* FalseFriend: [[spoiler: Mona befriended Hanna only as a part of her elaborate revenge plot as A. After Mona's death this of course leaves Hanna devastated because she thought Mona was a good friend of hers. Alison pretends to befriend the girls in the eighth book only so she can attempt to kill them in revenge because she felt like they were involved in stealing her life.]]
* FoeYay: Any scene with Darren and Hanna on the television series is filled with this.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: In the Halloween episode of the TV series, the story that Ali tells the boy she and Hanna are babysitting will definitely jump out to anyone who has read the books, assuming the producers are going to keep that plotline intact.
** Lucas accidentally showing Hanna an online betting site before he shows the pictures of her collecting trash during her community service has to be setting up something.
* FriendVersusLover: Which leads [[spoiler:Hanna]] to break up with [[spoiler:Lucas]] over her friendship with [[spoiler:Mona.]]
* FundraiserCarnival: A variation appears in the television series in place of Foxy.
* GenderFlip: Jenna and Toby's roles are switched on the television series.
* HalloweenSpecial: Aired on October 19, 2011, part of {{ABC Family}}'s "13 Nights of Halloween." It shows us the events that occured around the Halloween before Alison disappeared. We learn that A was stalking Alison too, that Alison was paying off her brother to keep something secret, and that Mona and Jenna became good friends shortly before Alison disappeared. Also, [[spoiler: Lucas]] may be a part of the "A" scheme, as he was wearing the same costume as Ali's stalker.
* HollywoodPudgy: In the television series, Hanna is continually described as being fat a year before. However, in the [[{{Flashback}} Flashbacks]] she looks pretty much the same, just wearing frumpy clothing.
** Completely averted eventually, with episode 13, which looks like she's wearing a fat suit.
* HollywoodNerd: Lucas and in flashbacks Mona, who are both Type 2.
* HotMom: Ella, Hanna's mom and Emily's mom.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: It seems like Lucas suffers this badly in the TV show.
* {{Jerkass}}: Alison definitely crosses into this trope. The reason why she is popular is because she is attractive, smart and charismatic. Also [[spoiler: her twin sister Courtney in the books.]]
* JustFriends: Hanna and Lucas.
* KeepingSecretsSucks: This is the whole premise of the book series which often involves the girls lying to keep their secrets buried. It is especially made worse by A who is out to reveal the girl's secrets and is constantly blackmailing them.
* LipstickLesbian: Emily, Samara, Trista, Paige and Maya.
* LesYay: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] by Alison in the books and show, to manipulate Emily.
* MamaBear: In the show, Pam Fields defends her daughter from Paige's father. She hasn't really changed her views on homosexuality, she just has a reaction to someone hurting her daughter.
* NameDrop: The rope song at the beginning of 'Through Many Dangers, Toils And Snares' clearly mentions (and is about) some ''PrettyLittleLiars''.
* TheNicknamer: Alison frequently gave nicknames to people. They included Jenna the Jerk, Snow White, Hefty Hanna, Killer for Emily and Hermes for Lucas.
* [[NiceGuy Nice Girl]]: Emily.
* NiceGuy: Lucas [[spoiler: but as of "A Hot Piece Of 'A'", he doesn't seem so much like this anymore.]]
* NiceHat: Spencer wears some awesome hats in the show.
* NoodleIncident: "The Jenna Thing", although it is revealed bit by bit throughout the first half of the second book, after which it turns into a gradual series of {{Reveal}}s.
* OneHeadTaller: Noel Kahn who is played by 6'1 Brant Daugherty and Aria who is played by 5'2 Lucy Hale.
* OrWasItADream: Hanna is visited by Alison while she is in the hospital in a weird surreal dream-like state leaving us unsure where it was real or not. In the books, [[spoiler: Alison really did visit Hanna because she was still alive.]]
** Emily has one of these with Alison later after passing out from inhaling too much carbon monoxide. It's unclear as to whether or not Alison really IS alive or if Emily was just dreaming.
*** Emily was rescued by someone and the fact that she was dragged away rather than carried suggests her rescuer was female.
* PaleSkinnedBrunette: Jenna and Aria. Jenna was even called Snow White by Alison before she went blind.
* PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad: Invoked by Emily's swim teammate's father. He claims that the only reason Emily became captain of the team is because she is lesbian.
* ProductPlacement: The Microsoft Kin phone in the TV series, Aria used it and showed off its Facebook app.
** Even worse in the books, which constantly name-drop designers, brands, and stores.
* PutOnABus: Caleb literally leaves on a bus near the end of season one, after writing a letter to Hanna which Mona is supposed to deliver. [[spoiler: In the season one finale, he returns at the request of Lucas.]]
* PutOnABusToHell: On TV show, Maya [[spoiler: is sent to juvie camp after Emily's mom finds marijuana in Maya's bag and lets Maya's parents know about this.]] She returned in the episode before the summer finale.
* RaceLift: Emily in the TV series is portrayed by Shay Mitchell who is Filipino and white. In the book, Emily is white and her mother even discourages her from being friends Maya because she is not white.
** Also applies to Mona who is played by Eurasian actress Janel Parrish.
* RapeIsOkayWhenItIsFemaleOnMale: Averted. Jenna doing this to Toby in the television series is viewed as being a very horrible thing to do someone.
* {{Revenge}}: This is Mona's primary motivation [[spoiler: leading her to become A.]]
* SchoolgirlLesbians: Emily fits this trope with [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer more than a few girls]] ...
** In the show: Emily and Maya, Emily and Alison, Emily and Paige, Emily and Samara.
* SecretRelationship: [[spoiler: Spencer and Toby]] are forced to pretend they aren't still dating in the second season.
* [[TallDarkAndBishoujo Short Dark and Bishoujo]]: Aria and Jenna.
* ShoutOut: In "Touched by an A-ngel", Hannah says she "isn't in the mood to play VeronicaMars."
* SinisterSilhouettes: Played with in the TV series: A isn't ''actually'' shown in silhouette, but is made to look like it by wearing a black coat and black gloves anytime she appears.
* SunglassesAtNight: On the television show, Jenna has always been seen with her sunglasses on.
** Although, in a recent episode, Jenna is slapped by Hanna after Hanna finds out [[spoiler: that Jenna was using Caleb to get information from Hanna]] causing her sunglasses to come off.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Trista and Samara share many similarities.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Noel Kahn, Ezra, Garrett, Toby, Caleb, Darren and Lucas in the books
* TeenDrama: The television series, marketed almost like "Desperate Housewives for teens".
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: Spencer has no memory of what happened the night that Alison disappeared. [[spoiler: It was revealed Spencer had a similar episode to this when she was younger because she had ended up getting sick. Spencer had gotten into a fight with Alison over Ian. This caused Spencer to push Alison down before leaving the area. Spencer then repressed the memory because of the trauma. Spencer started to remember causing her to believe she may have killed Alison. It turned out that A was just messing with her before Spencer remembered the truth]].
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: [[http://prettylittlebitchfaces.tumblr.com/ A hilarious tumblr dedicated to lampshading the constant and never ending use of the word on the show.]]
* TroubledButCute: Toby and Caleb.
* YourCheatinHeart: [[spoiler: Ella's boyfriend, Xavier, tries to cheat on her with Aria, who does not take it well.]]

* [[AloofBigBrother Aloof Big Sister]]: Melissa to Spencer

AdaptationDecay and AdaptationExpansion.

* AnyoneCanDie: Anyone who is important to the plot of one or more books will probably die in the next. By the end of ''Wanted'', the dead people include [[spoiler:Ali (''maybe''), Toby Cavanaugh, Mona Vanderwaal, Jenna Cavanaugh, Ian, and Courtney.]]
* AssholeVictim: Alison wasn't exactly the nicest person around. [[spoiler: Ultimately subverted, as Alison wasn't the "victim" after all.]]
* AttemptedRape: [[spoiler:Ben]] tries to rape [[spoiler:Emily]], but [[spoiler:Toby Cavanaugh]] saves her.
* BasedOnATrueStory: The author claims at the series is loosely based off her experiences on "...Philadelphia’s Main Line."

* BadassBookworm: Ezra, of a NonActionGuy variety. He repeatedly refuses to change Noel Kahn's grade, even when Noel threatens to tell the principal about Ezra's relationship with Aria. He sits at his desk, stoic, while Noel tells the principal, ready to face the consequences with dignity... but as it turns out, [[spoiler: the principal doesn't believe Noel's story, since he has a history of cheating and lying.]]
* TheBeautifulElite: Pretty much everyone in Rosewood. At worst they would be HollywoodHomely.

* BigEater: Hanna, played for drama.
--> Hanna: "My way of staying sane is to eat a ton of cheese-based snacks and then throw them up."

** Emily fits this too, but only in the books.

* BlackBestFriend: Maya, who is also a little bit more than that...
* {{Blackmail}}: A's messages.

* BlondesAreEvil: Mona, Alison, Melissa at some points in the books, Iris and Courtney.
** Kate on the television series.
* BreakTheCutie: In the books Jenna is teased constantly by Alison and her friends, abused by her stepbrother and then she is blinded by a prank gone wrong. She never holds the teasing against Aria and the others though, [[spoiler: and the prank was her idea, conceived in an effort to take her stepbrother out of the picture.]]
* BrokenBird: Aria
* BrotherSisterIncest / NotBloodSiblings: Toby and Jenna.
** But also qualifies as QuestionableConsent.
** There's also [[spoiler: Melissa and Jason who made out. It was later revealed that they share a father on the TV series.]]

* CassandraTruth: The girls telling Darren that a second A was tormenting them after [[spoiler:Mona's death]], and, more disturbingly, [[spoiler:Ali desperately trying to convince her parents that Courtney switched their identities. Her failure meant she was locked up in a mental asylum, where, presumably, everyone continued to insist that she was her sister. It's really no wonder she lost her mind as well.]]
* TheChessmaster: A is obviously this.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Hanna is like this in her relationship with Sean causing him to dump her.

* CureYourGays: Emily's parents attempt to do this.
* DaddysGirl: Hanna used to be like this with her dad before he remarried. However, after he married Isabel he preferred Kate to her causing her many insecurities.
* DarkSecret: Pretty much everyone in Rosewood has one of these...

* DeadlyPrank: The Jenna Thing is entirely based off this. The girls are convinced to play a prank on Toby involving a firework. Of course it backfires leading to Jenna's blindness and Toby taking the fall for it. [[spoiler: Jenna had actually conspired with Courtney to get rid of her stepbrother because he was abusing her. The firework went off at the wrong time causing all the chaos after it.]]

* DirtyCop: Darren uses some questionable methods while he is investigating the murder of Alison although he doesn't do anything that is actually illegal. After Hanna gets arrested for shoplifting her mom starts a relationship with Darren to keep Hanna from getting in trouble. Thankfully she kicks him out of the house eventually. He usually targets Hanna for interrogation and harassed Emily in one episode.
** [[spoiler: Garrett in the show is as well.]]
* DisappearedDad: Hanna's and Emily's. Averted in the case of Aria in the show, as her father refuses to leave the family when he and Ella separate.
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler: After Spencer rejects her offer to become A with her, Mona attempts to kill Spencer which leads to Spencer pushing Mona to her death over a cliff.]]
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: A's identity fits this because at first the girls suspect A is Alison but after she is discovered to be dead leading them to suspect Toby to be A. [[spoiler: It is actually Mona who was supposed to be best friends with Hanna which comes as a surprise to them because they never considered her at all. The second A turns out to be Alison which came as a huge shocker because it was revealed that she had killed her twin sister Courtney who was impersonating her at the time.]]
* TheDragon: Mona to Hanna.
* [[DroppedABridgeOnHim Dropped A Bridge On Her]]: [[spoiler:Jenna's murder at the hands of Alison was abrupt and mentioned very briefly in the books.]]
* DysfunctionJunction: All of the main characters have some kind of major issue. Spencer has to compete with her sister Melissa for everything including boyfriends and then her best friend Alison as well. Emily had a crush on her best friend Alison and was in a secret relationship with Maya because she knew how her parents would react. Hanna struggled with bulimia and her father favoring her stepsister Kate. Aria witnessed her father cheating on her mom with a student while keeping it secret from her family and she got romantically involved with her teacher.

* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Hanna - '''[[color:maroon:sanguine]]''', Spencer - '''[[color:orange:choleric]]''', Emily - '''[[color:black:melancholic]]''', and Aria - '''[[color:green:phlegmatic]]'''.
* {{Flashback}}: Every book is started with one. Also, the girls have flashbacks routinely about what they did with Ali.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:"Mona always knew the best dirt on people" less than forty pages into the first book will jump straight out at you on a reread.]]
** In the Halloween episode of the TV series, the story that Ali tells the boy she and Hanna are babysitting will definitely jump out to anyone who has read the books, assuming the producers are going to keep that plotline intact.

In the books their identity was revealed in the fourth book and eighth books. On the television series there have been no clues to A's identity as of yet.

* HotTeacher: Ezra
* HotForStudent / HotForTeacher: Aria and Ezra, though they don't find out they're student-and-teacher until the day after they meet at a bar.
* IAteWhat: Aria is a vegetarian, upon realizing in horror on her second week in Iceland that she ate a puffin.
* ItGetsWorse: Everything.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: In the books, this was the reason why Aria didn't fit in with her peers because she was much more interested in things such as philosophy and abstract art. This left her pretty much friendless until meeting Alison and the other girls.
** It seems like Lucas suffers this badly in the TV show.

* LukeIAmYourFather: [[spoiler: Zig-zagged. Spencer thinks she might be adopted and finds a woman who claims to be her birth mother, but then it turns out that her parents are hers, and the woman she thought was her mother was in fact her gestational surrogate trying to get more money from the Hastings.]] Also, in a more straight example, [[spoiler:Spencer's dad is Alison and Courtney's father]].
* MamaBear: Hanna's mom is rather protective of her. Even Darren lampshades this.
** In the show, Pam Fields defends her daughter from Paige's father. She hasn't really changed her views on homosexuality, she just has a reaction to someone hurting her daughter.
* ManBehindTheMan: The girls first think A is Alison which turns out to be wrong because it is [[spoiler: Mona. However, Mona knew nothing about Courtney and after her death a new A appeared. It is revealed to be Alison who was actually behind it this time and she was far more malicious as A than Mona had ever been since she killed Jenna and Ian.]]
* ManipulativeBitch: Courtney proves to be very skilled at manipulating other people. She was good at getting her friends to tell her their secrets.
