* This trope is so common with ''{{Transformers}}'' fanfic (in part due to the multiversal nature of the franchise), that it's acquired its own in-fandom term: [[http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Personal_canon personal canon]].
** Exhibit B for the "adapting obscure characters into a series-appropriate characterization": ''TransformersAnimated'', as seen with the many Website/DeviantArt pictures of characters drawn in ''Animated'''s style -- or, alternatively, [[CanonForeigner Bulkhead]] drawn as a G1 character.

* Due to the many varied portrayals of the [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Ninja Turtles]], any given FanFic will have characters from multiple incarnations, e.g. Agent Bishop from [[TMNT2003 2k3]] and the Neutrinos from [[WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1987 the original show]] appearing together.

** ''Series/EmeraldCity'' takes a ''lot'' of liberties with the source material, but is close enough to ''Literature/{{Wicked}}'' in tone for fanfic writers to start borrowing concepts like the Wizard's CompleteMonster characterization.

** And now we're going to have ''Film/OzTheGreatAndPowerful'' added to the mess that is Oz-based fanfic. Oscar Diggs's characterization is ''very'' much DependingOnTheWriter; anywhere from well-meaning con man to total bastard.

* The ''WesternAnimation/myLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' fanfic ''Fanfic/TheElementsOfHarmonyAndTheSaviorOfWorlds'' is a fusion of the original 80s ''MLP'' series and the ''FIM'' series of today (the 80s series took place in Equestria's distant past, with Megan now a semi-divine figure in Equestrian history). Not only that, it also brings in nearly all the other series based on Creator/{{Hasbro}} toys in the 80s from Sunbow and [[Creator/DePatieFrelengEnterprises Marvel Productions]] as the ''Hasbroverse''- ''WesternAnimation/GIJoeARealAmericanHero'', ''WesternAnimation/TheTransformers'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Jem}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Inhumanoids}}'', plus some that weren't or aren't Hasbro's to begin with, including ''Series/DoctorWho'' (using Doctor Whooves and his family with Ditzy), the ''WesternAnimation/DungeonsAndDragons'' cartoon (it was produced by Marvel solo for Creator/{{CBS}}, and currently rests with Disney- ''D&D'' only became a Hasbro property when they acquired Wizards of the Coast in 2000), and ''WesternAnimation/{{MASK}}'' (originally a Kenner property, it was "adopted" by the ''G.I. Joe'' line in 2008, after Hasbro bought Kenner in 1991).

* ''Series/{{Smallville}}'' fan fics are sometimes known for mixing in elements from the films and the {{DCAU}}, occasionally to get rid of some unsavory trait, ComicBook/GreenArrow being [[spoiler:a killer]], for example.

Most of the time, this is to combat particular instances of CharacterDerailment, or because the author really just has a [[SingleIssueWonk particular dislike]] for a character, but feels that using a different version is more magnanimous than not at all. Sometimes it's due to not having seen a certain adaptation of the character (a comic book hero versus a television version of the hero). Other times, one odd version of the character ended up being more interesting than every other, especially an AscendedExtra. And perhaps the writer [[TheyJustDidntCare just doesn't]] ''realize'' that the character is different in this version.
