* Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is no doubt a great title for the 3DS library, but once the Wii U version was released a little later, many players moved on for the home console experience. Some people even refer to the 3DS version as "beta". Sure, it doesn't have as many modes as the Wii U version, but the shared frame data between both versions is proof of impressive programming. Thankfully, the 3DS version isn't completely overshadowed, because when people aren't at home, they can still play Smash on the go.

* WebAnimatio/DeathBattle has matches like these frequently. Nearly every single combatant is a badass in their own right, and some can even fight on equal footing with their opponent. Other matches on the other hand, end up with the losers getting destroyed by their opponents who are simply better than them in some way.

** Sasuke himself is hit hard by this. [[spoiler: Despite being one of the stronger Ninja in the first half of Part II, he quickly, and we mean quickly begins being overshadowed by Naruto once Naruto masters Sage Mode. Its only made worse within the War when Sasuke is comparing his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan self to Naruto's Kurama Chakra Mode, not even knowing of Bijuu Mode. When Naruto brings out Bijuu Mode, powers up the entire army again and saves the entire Alliance...Sasuke shows jealously at how strong Naruto is. And even after getting powers from the Rikudo Sennin (Sasuke even gets the Rinnegan)...Naruto got more of a lion's share again and Sasuke has to designate himself as decoy against Kaguya since he is unable to even injure her(though to be fair even Naruto was having difficulties with giving her injuries and his powers were better suited for fighting some like Kaguya, it probably doesn't help that Naruto was already used to most of his powers and had guidance from 9 tailed beasts haha). After his fight with Naruto, this gets inverted as Naruto loses his Sage powers while Sasuke keeps his Rinnegan; in fact, Sasuke becomes the critical asset in later battles.]]

* Isidro of Manga/Berserk has a serious case of this, Yeah, he's a kid, and compared to Guts he's quite literally nothing, but he shows himself perfectly capable of holding his own against enemies that tear trained and heavily armoured soldiers to pieces, including killing at least a few Kushan Monsters assisted only by Puck. If this was a Shonen series, he'd be a full blown Badass.

** Similarly, in the original Anime/MobileSuitGundam, Sayla Mass and Kai Shiden are both very competent pilots and aces several times over. However, they have the misfortune to serve alongside Amuro "OneManArmy-personified" Ray, who upstages them at every turn, and be flying against Char Aznable, the series' most iconic badass.
** The same can be said of Yzak Joule in Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED who talents seem insignificant next to those of his superior, Athrun Zala, and his enemy, Kira Yamato. This only gets worse when the two of them recieve their respective Mid Season Upgrades. Then in the finale he and you remember that oh yeah, this guy's a badass. Kira's BigBrotherMentor, Mu La Flaga is in a similar position, though his general cool factor tends to outshine his handicaps.

** Also played straight with poor Celeborn. He's one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle-earth, a mighty Elf-Lord and heroic warrior. All in all a pretty Badass badass guy... But he happens to be married to Galadriel, who Tolkien describes as being the mightiest elf in Middle-earth after the death of Gil-galad and the "greatest of elven women". She's also an immensely powerful sorceress who was tutored by none other than an angel (Melian) and the lower level Gods (Yavanna and Aulë) themselves. So yeah... poor Celeborn.

** What about the PDF? The Planetary Defence Forces? It's joked that their role is to be punching bags long enough for the Imperial Guard and Space Marines to arrive, but think that not all of them are backwater hired guns and mercs. The wealthier and more important worlds have huge and well-equipped PDFs with competent officers, competent men, and have the money and industrial base to equip their men with the finest weapons and armour the Imperium can provide. Forge worlds are even more impressive, with lasguns, tanks and artillery that are produced by the Adeptus Mechanicus and actually superior to what the Imperial Guard get, not to mention they may be upgraded with the order's own cybernetics technology and turned into the Skitarii. Basically, a Forge World PDF will be the size and technology equivalent of the US military, a BadassArmy in their own right. Yet in come the Orks, Eldar or Tyranids, and the PDF get utterly crushed. The PDF lack the one thing that make the Imperial Guard competitive: quantity. Even the most Badass PDF is not enough. Not even close to being enough.

*** Again, in Radiant Dawn, because a lot of characters were featured, many of them ended up being overshadowed by the others, sometimes because of their team composition (such as the Rolf and Shinon case), sometimes because of the time they join (which means that you will already have better trained units by the point they join), sometimes because others characters of the same class are just that good. Edward as a Trueblade pretty much overshadow the others, thanks to his fantastics growth rates, though Zihark stay a very good one thanks to his innate Adept skill. Either way, Edward, Mia or Zihark will overshadow Stefan (who joins way too late, though he does have wonderful stats) and Lucia (who is just that bad, and joins very late your party). Tormod is overshadowed by every others Sages (or Archsages), since he doesn't show up until the very endgame. Also, pretty much every laguz unit will get overshadowed once their kings (and queen) join your party. Yeah, you get a pretty solid party of Badass in Radiant Dawn.

* Likewise, Hawkman on WesternAnimation/Superfriends was like Franchise/Superman without the Super -- he could fly, big deal. IBelieveICanFly Almost all the Superfriends could do that, and on a show with no hitting, having no other flashy yet nonviolent powers was the kiss of death. ** Bolin, also from Legend of Korra, was often overshadowed by the other members of the Krew despite being a Badass earthbender himself since he didn't possess any unique additional skills to the team and was mostly used for comic relief (in comparison we have Korra who overshadows everybody, Mako who not only is popular with the ladies, he also possess Lightning Bending and isn't afraid to use it and Asami whose rich, a genius engineer, and pilot). ** Yamcha is probably the one who suffers the most from this trope, despite being an experienced martial artist evidenced by each one of the Tenkaichi Budokai in which he took part. No matter how much he does to improve, he always gets to be one of the eight finalists and loses in the first round due to being put against a much more powerful opponent (Master Roshi, Tenshinhan and Kami-sama). At least he is GenreSavvy enough to know when to retire.

* The entire source of Unsui's woobieness in Anime/Eyeshield 21. An extremely hard working person who's described as being "only a good player" and "the best of the average" who doesn't even come close to his brother's level as a football player or even stand out compared to the quirkier characters. Made all the sadder by the fact that he's GenreSavvy enough to know his skills only make his brother look even more talented by comparison.

* Lots of non-channelers in Literature/TheWheelOfTime, since the One Power is so powerful that there really isn't any way for them to compete, with the exception of Mat Cauthon, who has an AntiMagic medallion. Also, Min, who is pretty good with her knives but is laughably out of her league compared with every single character in the series, realizes this in the later books and decides to become The Smart Girl instead by relentlessly studying the Prophecies of the Dragon. On a related note, when Mat protests that he's a lesser ta'veren compared to Rand, Verin tells him that in any other time, Mat and Perrin would be the strongest ta'veren in the world.

*** Averted now by the fact that Zigzagged with its Mega Evolution: Mega Pidgeot is a bit more powerful then most Non-Mega Flying types, but now it has a (very powerful) to also compete with other Mega Evolution while the rest of the Normal/Flying birds Pokémon... Which greatly outclass it in that outclassed him in the past doesn't.department (Mega Pidgeot gains No Guard as an ability, which means that all its move never miss, and all moves directed towards it will hit). Pidgeot simply cannot catch a break.
