* In the last 30 minutes, this happens to Batman in Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice. When Doomsday shows up, both Superman and Wonder Woman give excellent displays of their power and skill against him, and even if they can't take him on they still make it clear that they're trying. Batman, though, is basically powerless against him and spends the fight...running away (quite literally; the most he can due is duck when he gets shot at and leap away from attacks, then towards the end fires a single grenade at him). Its noticeable because a few minutes before that, he got an impressive scene showing him destroying Lex's hired goons, and he won the fight with Superman (though only because Superman was only trying to disarm Batman while Batman was giving it his all), but against Doomsday he looks pathetic.

* LastActionHero and WesternAnimation/OnceUponAForest were a pair of fine movies. Had they opened in the spring or fall of 1993, they might have stood a chance at doing well. Instead, they both opened on June 18, 1993...one week after JurassicPark. They both bombed miserably back then, but are at least seen as cult classics today.

** Chad need not feel too sorry however, for Ichigo managed to overshadow a good portion of the afterlife during the Soul Society Arc. With nothing but a few months (if that) of fighting hollows (including a Menos Grande before their VillainDecay) and a stint of training with Urahara underneath his belt, Ichigo manages plough his way through two Captains, One Lieutenant, one Third Seat, one Gatekeeper and a score of nameless lower-ranked mooks. Oh, and this was in between taking a little break to unlock his Zanpakuto's Bankai, which is considered to be the greatest mark of a Soul Reaper's skill.

** Except for the scene where they fight each other, Hawkeye and Black Widow both suffer from this trope in Film/2012. While they are hypercompetent at archery and hand-to-hand combat, respectively, their status of WeakButSkilled just doesn't measure up to Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, or the Incredible Hulk.

* One episode of Doug has the title character placed into a talent show. He attempts to perform with a ventriloquist act, only for Chalkie to come on first with two puppets. Doug is rightfully mortified (though some improvisation by Skeeter manages to make his performance stand out).
* Done almost identically in an episode of SouthPark. Mr Garrison apparently held a life long grudge towards Kathy Lee Gifford over a school talent show, following up his comedy skit with Mr Hat with a huge song and dance number, at one point similarly performing with two puppets at once.

* Australian Cricket leg spinner Stuart [=MacGill=] spent pretty much his entire career overshadowed by Shane Warne despite being good enough to get into many other national sides. Not to mention that he routinely outplaying Warne when they played. Then we have Warne himself, one of the greatest spinners of all time but not quite the greatest of his generation -- that award would probably go to Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.

** The team who has this worst of all, however, is the U.S. men's team -- overshadowed by the international men's teams on one side and the U.S. women's team on the other.

* Missy Franklin was this at the 2012 Olympic swimming to Ye Shiwen, despite winning more gold medals. However, this was put to rest a year later when Franklin absolutely dominated the World Championships.

*** The 2015 World Cup didn't make things better for Lilly, as it propelled a lot of new names into the spotlight, namely Carli Lloyd and Sydney Leroux.

** Also played straight with poor Celeborn. He's one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle-earth, a mighty Elf-Lord and heroic warrior. All in all a pretty Badass badass guy... But he happens to be married to Galadriel, who Tolkien describes as being the mightiest elf in Middle-earth after the death of Gil-galad and the "greatest of elven women". She's also an immensely powerful sorceress who was tutored by none other than an angel (Melian) and the lower level Gods (Yavanna and Aulë) themselves. So yeah... poor Celeborn.

* Used a few times in VisualNovel/ShoujotachiWaKouyaOMezasu:
** Yuuka watches another voice actress perform some lines, and feels inadequate as a result. She ends up flubbing a lot of her dialogue, and takes so much time on retakes that they run out of time at the recording studio. She suffers a HeroicBSOD after this, but fortunately Buntarou and Sayuki snap her out of this later on.
** Though they're getting mostly positive feedback on their demo game, the club tries out a demo from a game company who released a demo of their game on the same day. As each member plays it, they notice how much more professional their competitor's game is, and begin to doubt themselves. Sayuki then reassures them that both of the games are marketed towards different audiences, so shouldn't be compared side by side.

** The Byakugan also fell into this. Initially it was well matched with Sharingan. The former had X-ray, telescopic and chakra pathway analysis, and the latter could follow your movements, copy jutsu and hypnotise. As time went on, not only did the regular Sharingan gain several new and potentially game breaking abilities, but it also gained the ability to evolve into the Mangekyo Sharingan and then on to the Rinnegan, which are two of the most powerful abilities in the series. Even though it is still incredibly useful, especially when paired with the Gentle Fist, the Byakugan simply does not measure up anymore.
