* The Rothschild family. With their insane amounts of wealth (one of the France based Rothchilds had 100 million more francs than the REST OF THE BANKERS OF FRANCE COMBINED) funded both sides of several wars, owned huge amounts of government bonds, declared NOBILITY, and were able to fund such actions as the De Beers diamond monopoly, and that is only the stuff we know about. How much power, businesses, or wealth the family had or has is a mystery.
** The Rothschilds are today only a shadow of their former might. UsefulNotes/WorldWarII was an economic disaster for them, wiping out their real assets, and as the Rothschilds gave up marrying their cousins to keep the wealth within the family, the family wealth has diluted. Nevertheless, they still remain rich.

* In ''VideoGame/''Metroid'', the Space Pirates wield enough military, scientific, and financial power to pose a serious threat to the Galactic Federation. How well they fit this trope is debatable given their secrecy, as they may be an actual government in the areas they control.

** Mexican drug cartels are today what the Medellin Cartel used to be, in particular the Sinaloa cartel and the Los Zetas. They make an estimated $60 ''billion'' dollars a year and they can stand toe-to-toe with the Mexican military, in several cases matching them for firepower.

*** Darth Maul's Shadow Collective introduced in ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]'' is a [[DeconstructedTrope deconstruction]] of this trope. It's during the events of ''ComicBook/DarthMaulSonOfDathomir'' that Maul's Collective starts to show its flaws. * The Ganglion in ''VideoGame/XenobladeChroniclesX'' are a "small" crime syndicate originating from the Samaar Federation, which controls around six million light years of space. Aside from simply technologically outclassing humanity, the Ganglion have an army and fleet comparable to (if not larger than) Earth's largest nations, have enlisted entire species as slaves or enforcers, built a flight-capable HumongousMecha that can double as a carrier, and destroyed Earth. They are also implied to have some political influence in the Samaar Federation.

* The ''VideoGame/{{X}}-Universe'' games have many of these. SpacePirates and the space Yakuza field battleships, carriers, frigates, and fighter wings despite having no government, no taxes, and no known ship production facilities - though this may be explained by their capital ships being cobbled together from the wrecks of old ships. The {{Mega Corp}}s, like the Optimized Technology And Shielding corporation, field their own capital ships, fleets of transporters, and patrol their home sectors with frigates and corvettes. Beginning with ''Reunion'', the player him/herself can effectively become one after acquiring a PlayerHeadquarters.
** The Plutarch Mining Corporation up and decides to forgo the whole "N.G.O." part and ousts the Argon Federation remnant in [[LostColony Albion]] in ''Videogame/XRebirth'', setting themselves up as the [[OneNationUnderCopyright governing power]].
