Manila was once a decadent Muslim Kingdom ruled by the great Raja Sulayman, and was a mercantile power in the far east, trading with China, Japan, and the Malays. Well, until the Spaniards came. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, conquistador

When people refer to Manila, they do not usually mean the city itself, but the whole metropolitan area of sixteen cities that form '''Metro Manila''' (officially the ''National Capital Region''), of which Manila is a part of.

A Notable feature of Manila is that it virtually lack a downtown district or a city center, almost all of the main urban hubs and Government offices are peppered around the city like raisins on a bun. Architects and urban planners often cite Manila as one of the worst examples of improper urban planning in the world, and the effects are detrimental: It suffers from flooding, heavy traffic, pollution, and ugliness, and a century of changing governments and leaders are to blame.

When the Americans came to the Philippines, what was considered to be Manila only comprised of a small fortified city situated south of the Pasig river, and a small number of settlements that encircled the citadel, making it a ''tabula rasa'' for the Americans to plan and construct, with Daniel Burnham, the guy who designed the roads of [[TheWindyCity Chicago]], was put in charge. 
 
Burnham designed post-Spanish Manila similar to Washington DC: the government center was built surrounding an open park like the National Mall; the chosen location was Bagumbayan, because this is where the hero Jose Rizal was Martyred.

However, the Philippine President, Manuel L. Quezon, out of fear that being close to the bay makes Manila very vulnerable to an attack, ordered the construction of new city 30 kilometers away from Manila. The Government purchased a large amount of land encompassing Novaliches and Diliman from the Tuazon Family, and designed the main resettlement districts, called projects. Today, these projects formed the basis of "barangays" or wards of the city.

In World War II, when Manila was retaken by the Americans, it was the most devastated Asian city, surpassing even Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As a result, shantytowns spread like mushrooms, and Manila today still have lot of slums, called 'informal settlements' for political correctness. However, Manila despite all its troubles, is as interesting as any Asian city, due to its diversity and the fact that Manila is a city of cities.

When people (particularly foreigners) talk about Manila, the capital of the UsefulNotes/{{Philippines}}, they don't simply talk about a city -- they talk about a conglomeration of seventeen local government units (sixteen cities and one municipality, under the aegis of the eponymous City of Manila), officially designated by the Philippine government as the National Capital Region (NCR). Like SanFrancisco, Manila is also a "City by the Bay", owing to its strategic location at the innermost end of a natural harbor.

Once a Muslim kingdom on the banks of the Pasig River (which drains from nearby Laguna de Bay) ruled by rajahs and trading with the Chinese, Japanese, Indians and Malays, Manila never went unnoticed by an island-hopping Spanish fleet, whose leader, Miguel López de Legazpi, personally led its conquest in 1571, and upon the ruins of the old Muslim kingdom he founded Manila as it is known today.

Manila flourished as the capital of the Spanish East Indies (which included modern-day Palau, Guam, the Northern Marianas, and the Federated States of Micronesia), including a two-year stint under British rule in 1762-1764, a product of the SevenYearsWar between Spain's ally France and britain. Manila also flourished as the western terminus of a trade fleet to and from Acapulco in Mexico.

By the time the Americans occupied the Philippines as part of a peace deal with Spain after the SpanishAmericanWar, what was considered Manila was but a fortified city (now the aptly-named Intramuros district of the City of Manila) on the southern bank of the Pasig surrounded by small settlements on a vast flatland. This setup gave the Americans the idea of giving Manila a makeover. Under Daniel Burnham, the same man who designed modern [[TheWindyCity Chicago]], a southern clearance for Intramuros was developed to become the national capital zone, with the capitol on the eastern end, facing Manila Bay to the west, and a granite monument to Jose Rizal, reformist executed by the Spanish on that same field on December 30, 1896, at the center. However, in 1938 then-President Manuel Quezon, fearing Manila's vulnerability to enemy attack, scuffled the rest of Burnham's plan (save the already-redesigned field) in favor of a new capital 10km to the northeast, purchasing land from the influential Tuazon family and naming it Quezon City.

And Quezon was oddly correct -- in 1941, days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Manila was attacked by the Japanese. But that was just a foretaste of something even worse. Between November 1944 and February 1945 Manila saw the most destructive battle of WorldWarII's Pacific front. The Americans retook the city, but at the cost of 1,000 Americans, 16,000 Japanese, and ''100,000 civilians'', and a city devastated beyond repair, surpassed only by UsefulNotes/{{Warsaw}}. After the war, reconstruction was hasty, and the result is a melange of subdivisions and shantytowns across the City of Manila and its neighboring cities.

Metro Manila as a political entity came to be in 1975 when then-president Ferdinand Marcos created the Metropolitan Manila Commission (now the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, or MMDA).

One thing notable about Manila is that it has virtually no main city center, as each of its seventeen cities has its own functioning government. As a result the NCR is something of an urban planner's worst nightmare, with mayors frequently disagreeing on basic issues concerning the metropolis. Its extensive urbanization also frequently leaves most of the metropolis at the mercy of floodwater and typhoons (as hurricanes are called in the Asia-Pacific region), not to mention parts of it sitting on top of a still potentially dangerous fault line.

Metro Manila's discordant nature, however, can also tend to work to its benefit. The City of Manila is the cultural and political center (and home to the President), while Quezon City houses most government offices (a vestige of being capital from 1945 to 1975). Makati and Taguig serve as the nexus of the Philippine economy, while Pasig serves as a viable alternative. Pasay is home to the metropolis' airport. Caloocan, Navotas, Malabon and Valenzuela to the north, San Juan and Mandaluyong to the center, and Pateros, Parañaque and Las Piñas to the south, are mainly middle-class suburbs, and southern Muntinlupa is home to the rich and famous.

During the American Period, it was envisioned to become an upscale residential community of American expatriates, but post-war reconstruction took advantage of it's prominent location by the bay and became and entertainment district. Malate boasts of many hotels, nightclubs and discos, with huge neon signs enough to rival Malibu and Las Vegas sans the gambling. Manila's long promenade, called the ''Baywalk'' stretches two kilometers along Malate's west side. 
* Paco - a mainly middle-class residential area immediately east of Ermita. Paco comes from the word ''Paco de Dilao'', Spanish for "Yellow Amarillo", pigment producing plants which grew abundantly in the area. During the Spanish Era, it was the primary settlement of Japanese travelers in the Philippines, although they did not remain there permanently like the Chinese did at Binondo. 
* Pandacan 
* San Andres Bukid - a middle class residential area east of Malate which is bordered by the city of Makati in the east.
* Tondo - the polar opposite of Malate, Tondo is Manila's highly infamous version of a skid row, where crime abounds day and night. Most of the residents of Tondo belong to the lower-middle class up to the downright impoverished, most of which has no day job. After the war, it became a center of mobsters and organized crime syndicates who fought against each other for control of the area. Nowadays very much the same, except that the mobsters were replaced with hipster teens who pretended they were niggas. 
* Puerto de Manila - or the Port Area. Straddles the area from Smokey Mountain (a garbage dump - turned housing project) west of Tondo then crosses the river to end at the Anda Circle just outside Intramuros. The two dockport areas north and south of the Pasig river were aptly called North Harbor and South Harbor, with civil transport and domestic cargo in the former and international cargo designated in the latter. 
* Binondo - the first Chinatown in the world, existing even before the concept of a FriendlyLocalChinatown was established. Originally called ''Parian'', it was the settlement area designated by the Spanish Government in 1594 for the Chinese traders who frequented Manila during the years of the Galleon trade because non-Christians are not permitted access in the walled citadel (Intramuros), and was proximate enough for the Spanish to keep an eye on things (at least two cannons in Intramuros are always pointed at Parian should an uprising occur.) Owing to the GenreSavvy Chinese living in the area, the place became a bustling area of trade and commerce that still continues up to this day. 
* Quiapo - a market district and the melting pot of all cultures in Manila, Quiapo is the location of two important sites of worship for Christians and Muslims alike: The Basilica of the Black Nazarene, which houses an icon of Jesus Christ highly revered by Filipino Catholics, and the Golden Mosque of Manila.
