* ''WebVideo/DreamSMP'': The [[WhamEpisode Red Banquet]] ends up with a GambitPileup, with both [[TheEmpire the Eggpire]] and the pro-Omelette (anti-Eggpire) attendees using a multitude of back-up plans to try to out-gambit the other side. In the end, [[spoiler:the pro-Omelette side]] manages to score a victory... using a plan that is ''completely'' independent of the pre-established gambits, involving [[spoiler:an uninvited pro-Omelette guest recruiting his OneManArmy [[EnemyMine enemy]] and a mercenary to crash the Banquet and take on the Eggpire.]]

* ''Series/BrooklynNineNine:'' during the series finale, [[spoiler: the final heist descends into yet another GambitPileup, as per usual, but [[SpannerInTheWorks Bill]] suddenly betrays everyone and absconds with the prize. But the winner winds up being ''[[TheFriendNobodyLikes Hitchcock]],'' whose plan was: pretend to retire from the Nine-Nine and hide out in the Beaver Trap and...forget to come up with an actual heist plan, and accept Bill's offer to sell it to him 40 bucks.]] Naturally, [[spoiler: Jake decides they can't accept Hitchcock at the ultimate heist champion, and returns to the precinct so [[AndTheAdventureContinues the annual heists can continue into the future]].]]

* At the end of ''Anime/CodeGeass'', it's ultimately [[spoiler:Nunnally vi Britannia]] who ends up in control of the Holy Britannian Empire, with [[spoiler:her Knight of Zero Suzaku Kururugi]] at her side.

* Fortinbras in ''Theatre/{{Hamlet}}'' is established as seeking revenge on Denmark for past grievances. He ends up having the crown fall into his lap because all the legitimate claimants have killed each other.

* In ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', between all the resources [[AncientConspiracy SEELE]] threw after achieving [[AssimilationPlot Instrumentality]], and [[TheStarscream Gendo]] scheming against them to further his own agenda, [[spoiler:it turns out that Yui had successfully rigged the game from the start, with help from Fuyutsuki, to both foil SEELE's plans and becoming a god-like creature, even without having a physical body anymore. It is somewhat vague if Gendo's plan would have actually interfered with hers, but the question became effectively academic when Rei rebelled against him]].

* In ''Film/[[Maverick]]'', after a whole film dealing with other con men, angry gunfighters, more brutal thieves and the long odds of winning a card tournament in order to get a lot of money, Bret Maverick finally gets it all [[spoiler:or rather half -- he was expecting something like this to happen so he concealed half of his loot inside of his boots beforehand]] stolen from him [[spoiler:by fellow con artist and up to that point LoveInterest Annabelle, who sees the whole insanity going on decides to just wait until all hell calms down, walks in on Bret and his father while they are taking a bath with a gun in her hand, takes the money and leaves.]] Bret [[spoiler:and his father]] call it fair cop and look forward to how much fun they are going to have getting the money back.

Once it's clear he's holding all the cards at about the 2/3 mark, the rest either (grudgingly) allies with him or give up on their own plots to [[EnemyMine focus on taking him down]].]]

* [[UsefulNotes/TheHouseOfTudor Henry VII of England]] was this, both in RealLife and in Creator/WilliamShakespeare's play ''Theatre/RichardIII''.
** Actually he doesn't come across as this in the play, which does a HistoricalHeroUpgrade on him, portraying him as the rightful King. Also many people forget that other Yorkists attempted this on him.

When this happens, the expected result is that it's one of the major [[TheChessmaster chessmasters]] who comes out on top (especially [[MagnificentBastard one who turns out to have been playing all the other players to their own ends]]), but it's just as likely that the final winner is a minor player, a SpannerInTheWorks who unknowingly sabotages the efforts of the would-be masterminds, or even [[ActionSurvivor someone who's simply lucky enough to be alive when the dust finally settles]].
