[[http://kickstarter.com Kickstarter]] is probably the most well known [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_funding crowd funding]] website in existence. Basically, here you can obtain money for any creative project[[hottip:*:stuff like businesses, charities, etc, are not allowed]] you have by submitting a description of your project (usually alongside a shot video) and promising rewards to people who "pledge" different amounts. While the site has enjoyed a reasonable success beforehand, in February 2012 everything changed: not only did an iPhone dock become the first project to raise a million dollars, but legendary game developer TimSchafer announced he was going to raise money for a new adventure game. Said project ended up raising over ''3 million'', with 1 million raised ''in a single day''. ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick'' Reprint Drive also joined the +1 million club the same month. Schaefer's success then caused a [[FollowTheLeader large number of game developers to turn to Kickstarter]]. Said developers included Brian Fargo, [[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2?ref=live who raised over 2.7 million for]] ''VideoGame/{{Wasteland}} 2''; Al Lowe who is [[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leisuresuitlarry/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again?ref=live seeking]] to remake VideoGame/LeisureSuitLarry in HD; Jane Jensen, [[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg?ref=live seeking funding]] for her adventure game studio and others. ---- !!Notable Kickstarter projects include: * ''Music/{{Animusic}} 3''. * ''Webcomic/AwkwardZombie: Volume One'' * ''Webcomic/BrawlInTheFamily: Volume One'' * ''Cans Without Labels'' - A short from JohnKricfalusi tributing the frugality of his father through George Liquor. * ''VideoGame/{{Carmageddon}}: Reincarnation'' * ''Videogame/DefenseGridTheAwakening 2''. * ''WebAnimation/DickFigures: TheMovie'' * ''Distance'', SpiritualSuccessor to ''[[VideoGame/NitronicRush Nitronic Rush]].'' * ''DoubleFine Adventure'' * ''VideoGame/DreamfallChapters'', a sequel to the traditionally-funded ''VideoGame/TheLongestJourney'' and ''VideoGame/DreamfallTheLongestJourney'' adventure classics. * DavidBraben, one half of the team behind the groundbreaking ''Videogame/{{Elite}}'' space trading combat sim, succesfully reached his £1.25 million goal for [[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous?ref=live ''Elite:Dangerous'']]. * ''VideoGame/FTLFasterThanLight'' * ''Literature/TheGirlWhoWouldBeKing'' * The storyboard animatic for a CG feature film adaptation of ''TheGoon''. * ''{{Homestuck}}'' Adventure game: Reached it's goal within ''two days'', and ultimately raised over 350% of its $700,000 goal. It's called Comically Missing the Point, and this is not an example of it
* CompletelyMissingThePoint: According to ObsidianEntertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart, they were approached by several publishers to make a Kickstarter campaign ''on their behalf''. Urquhart described the meetings as going something like this: -->'''Urquhart''': So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for you, using our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then publish the game, but we then donít get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits. -->'''Publisher rep''': Yes. ** Needless to say, they said "Screw that" and made a so far pretty successful campaign for themselves.
