Perhaps they view all of life as a cosmic game, with humans as mere pawns and tools. Perhaps they're hungry for worship, either out of necessity or just a huge ego, and are willing to resort to manipulation to get it. Maybe they're just keen on DisproportionateRetribution (a very common trait in religions throughout history). Maybe it's the age old adage "AGodAmI power corrupts", or maybe they're just trolls, but whatever the case, the deities are just jerks. They view human life as a source of entertainment, or an inconvenience.

** Vulcan owns a gun manufacturing plant in which NoOSHACompliance is in full effect. It's cheaper to settle with the families of the average of two people a year that die after falling into the vats than it is to bring the place up to code. What's more, he explicitly gains power from mass shootings. Any time someone is killed with his guns, it counts as a human sacrifice to him. Also, he's mean to Shadow.

** This is the approach used in the AffectionateParody webcomic TheCallOfWhatever, and once humanity starts jerking Nyarlathotep around in turn (thanks to Occultech's helpline boosting cultist survival/success rates), he quits his job. This was more Jerkassish than you would think.

** While Alola's guardians protect the islands from danger, they're not exactly friendly. Tapu Koko is capricious and fickle in saving people, Tapu Lele casually uses its scales to cause people to fight and kill each other for its own amusement, Tapu Bulu destroyed a supermarket when one was built near its sacred lands (despite being the nicest of the Tapus), and Tapu Fini is indifferent to those in need, and only helps those who survive its powerful fog. Fittingly, they're all part Fairy-type.

He doesn't just teleport them back to Africa, or anything kind like that. Part of this is that GodsNeedPrayerBadly. Anansi and the other gods have recently been brought into being because of the belief of people newly arrived in the country. Anansi even lampshades this by saying, "You want him, huh," referring to the original, full-powered incarnation of Anansi the slaves left back in Africa. These gods are underpowered because they have only a fraction of their worshipers available on the new continent. Anansi did not have the power to rescue those men. Not that he would have if he could have; sending his few followers to another country would weaken him. Sacrifice and belief are necessary for gods to gain more power.
