* In ''Film/EscanabaInDaMoonlight'', Reuben drinks a potion given to him by his Native American wife, which is said to be a special spiritual remedy of the Ojibwa tribe to bring good luck during deer hunting. They all drink it without question, after which Reuben reveals the contents. They start out innocent enough, with cow's milk, spices, maple sap and barley then quickly go on to dried earthworms, squirrel gizzards and moose testicles. Cue SpitTake from two of the other guys, followed by CloudCuckooLander Jimmer finishing off the rest of the other guys' drinks.

%% * ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' - George served scrambled eggs secretly laced with lobster to Jerry's girlfriend, revealing it after she ate... many people would love this combination (she did until she knew what it was), but she followed a kosher diet. This was his revenge for her telling his girlfriend about his "shrinkage".

[[/folder]]* On July 16, 2012, a Burger King employee on 4chan anonymously uploaded a photo of his feet in two plastic bins of lettuce, accompanied by the statement "This is the lettuce you eat at Burger King." It took some disgusted 4chan users a mere 20 minutes to use Exif data to track down the location where the photo was taken, call the Burger King restaurant at said location, and get the rogue employee fired.
** The scandal became the subject of a popular meme after [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azSYefZhv1s a video]] about mysteries solved by 4chan was uploaded by the popular channel [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClW44KG_EKETupl-3BlnLSQ Top15s]] in late 2017, with the scandal itself being referred to as "Burger King Foot Lettuce".

* Salmiakki. It is ammonium chloride mixed with black licorice, being simultaneously sweet, fiery and salty, and ingesting it increases salivation. ''Salmiakki'' is considered a confectionery in Finland and eaten also elsewhere in Scandinavia, Netherlands and northern Germany, but people outside those countries usually find ''salmiakki'' distasteful and ''heavily'' overlapping with ForeignQueasine. A Scandinavian practical joke is to eat ''salmiakki'' with happy face and then offer it to a foreigner...
** ''Wikipedia states the ammonium chloride is used on fertilizers, dry batteries, cold mixtures, detergents and cough medicines. It is also used on galvanizing steel, soldering and dyeing. You can manufacture it at home by mixing ammonia with hydrochloric acid. I wonder why the foreigners won't find so multi-use confectionery as tasty?'' (A Finnish talk show host.)

* Holmes gets chastised by Watson in ''Film/SherlockHolmes'' for drinking a bottle of a chemical intended for use in eye surgery. The sequel has a similar line when Holmes pours himself a glass of formaldehyde. Subverted in the fact that Holmes knows perfectly well what he is drinking.

* Usually, it's not a good idea to eat something from the wild if you're not a professional at identifying edible food in the wild. Often, you're warned not to eat any berries or mushrooms you come across. Better to refrain than try it and learn when it's too late.
** A tumblr user posted how they found a tree with strangely large cucumbers hanging from it. They took one home to try it, but disposed of it (by throwing it into their neighbor's hot tub, but that's besides the point) after being disgusted by the taste. The user later learned from comments that it was actually kigalia, a poisonous fruit. Of course, they panicked, but apparently ended up fine.

This trope covers instances when a character eats or drinks something that's not intended to be food. Most of the time, [[SenselessPhagia the character is not aware of what they're consuming]]; typically results in a SpitTake, VomitIndiscretionShot, or some other response once the discovery is made.

* The Saints Flow energy drink in ''Videogame/SaintsRowTheThird'' and ''Videogame/SaintsRowIV'' is not only stated to taste terrible but is not-so-subtly implied to contain questionable ingredients. Especially in the ''Enter the Dominatrix'' DLC when the Saints have to fight a giant, anthropomorphic Saints Flow can named Paul by flying into it and dropping a bomb into his brain.
--> '''Zimos''': Hold on. This thing has a brain? What exactly have I been drinking all of these years?
--> '''Pierce''': I'm contractually prevented from divulging the secret ingredients in Saints Flow.
