See also ScaryShinyGlasses. CommonEyeColors are more useful to ascertain personality traits and temperament than moral alignment. Note that characters who have their EyesAlwaysShut do not really fit anywhere on this continuum, as they tend to symbolize something else entirely, whether good or evil. When this trope is used with [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter critters]] or [[AttackOfThe50FootWhatever monsters]], it's BigEyesLittleEyes.

* Inverted in the {{DCAU}} where {{Comicbook/Superman}} has squinty little eyes of just an upper eyebrow and a pupil while ComicBook/LexLuthor has more normal eyes with a white to them. Also ignored in most other cases as eye size seems gender based; all ladies get big eyes no matter how evil they are.

However, this trope is slightly more complex than it used to be. Instead of one eye size for goodies and another for baddies, there is a continuum between the FriendToAllLivingThings and the BigBad reflecting just how good or bad a character is. On the side of good, the {{Badass}} AntiHero willing to ShootTheDog has eyes narrower than the hero's but wider than those of the villain. Villains with wider eyes tend to be of the KnightTemplar, WellIntentionedExtremist, or AntiVillain types; either that, or they will PetTheDog a few times.

* In ''Webcomic/CommanderKitty'', you can tell what state Zenith is in by looking at her eyes. In her normal mode (evil), she has black pupils and a dark line above her eyes for her glower. In safe mood (good), she has solid white pupils and seemingly wider eyes. [[spoiler:And when she snaps and becomes a {{brain upload}}ing OmnicidalManiac, her eyes glow solid blue.]]

* ''ComicStrip/TheBoondocks'' plays an interesting variation: black people have narrow eyes, white people have wider eyes. Due to its {{Animesque}} style, this makes white girls look like [[GenericCuteness your average anime girl]].
