* Parodied on the ''Series/SaturdayNightLive'' skit "Happy Smile Patrol", when a white supremacist gang takes a church group hostage. The news reports states "without making any demands, have begun sending fingers and ears to authorities."

* On ''Series/WithoutATrace'' after a man is kidnapped and his wife tries to deliver the ransom, she comes back with his severed finger, claiming the kidnappers want more money and cut his finger off to demonstrate how serious they are. * In a story that followed ''ComicBook/TheDeathOfClarkKent'', [[Franchise/{{Superman}} Clark]] receives a letter from Conduit (a fierce enemy of his who died in the previous arc) saying "the Golden Gopher was mine!" and containing a lock of ComicBook/JimmyOlsen's hair. This instantly sends Clark flying off to the address indicated by the note, which was what Conduit wanted as he had set up a DeadManSwitch to kill Jimmy after his death (and, if possible, Superman as well).
