* It can be said that defiance is ComicBook/LexLuthor's super power. As well as his undying campaign against [[PhysicalGod someone like Superman]], in one instance, he is kidnapped by ComicBook/TheJoker and tortured for the location of some of the Joker's meaner gadgets. Luthor's response? Tease the Joker about his FoeYay with Bats.
** After he's badly mangled in the previous issue, Lex spends ''Action Comics #894'' with Death of the Endless (DC's [[DontFearTheReaper cheery, sweet]] [[TheGrimReaper Grim Reaper]]). As he tries several ploys to get her to revive him, she gently reminds him that death just isn't negotiable. With his options exhausted, he tells her to fuck off because one way or another, he will "find a way to beat [death]. [[spoiler: He's only having a near-death experience. Death finds him so fascinating that she just ''had'' to chat Luthor up!]]

* In ''Film/{{Equilibrium}}'', Partridge actually doesn't care when he's eventually exposed, going so far as to calmly quote a Yeats poem in front of Preston. He refuses to bend to Libria's will, even with Preston standing over him with a gun. Part of the reason for his defiance can be better demonstrated in the conversation below, since his questioning with Preston clearly involved trying to get the latter to do the same himself and fight against society instead of with it. [[spoiler: We later discover he was part of the Resistance, enabling Preston to have his HeelFaceTurn, join them and help take down the corrupt governing power. Namely [=DuPont=], since he happened to be the real ruler, but did it under the guise of Father after the latter died]].

* From http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/88old/canoe.14.html: There were three guys traveling in Africa: a Frenchman, a Japanese, and an American. They are captured by a tribe of fierce headhunters. The witch doctor says to them, "We are going to slaughter you, but you might take some comfort in the fact that we don't believe in waste here, and that therefore every part of your body will go to some use. We will weave baskets out of your hair, we will render your bones for glue, and we will tan your skin and stretch it over wooden frames for canoes. Now we are going to allow you an honorable death, so I will give you each a knife and allow you to say some last words before killing yourselves."

And before them, Eleazar boldly refused to make it even look like he was eating forbidden food when meat sanctioned by the Law of God was substituted, so as to not cause other faithful Jews to turn away from God.
