* Húrin Thalion in Literature/TheSilmarillion defies Morgoth himself, mocking him and refusing to say anything about Turgon and his stronghold. Even if this defiance is remembered as a great deed, he pays dearly for it.

* Húrin Thalion in Literature/TheSilmarillion gets two of these:
** In the conclusion of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Húrin is left alone on a battlefield that has been completely overrun by the enemy - the hosts of the elves were utterly broken and routed, and most of his fellow men [[spoiler: (those who didn't betray the Alliance to Morgoth),]] lay dead all around him. So what does he do? He keeps swinging his axe against the horde of orcs all around him, and for every orc he kills he cries "Auré enteluva (Day shall come again)!" He kills over 70 orcs before being taken.
** After being captured, he
defies Morgoth himself, mocking him and refusing to say anything about Turgon and his stronghold. Even if this defiance is remembered as a great deed, he pays dearly for it.

* VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft. Sir Zeliek is one of these. Even though he's technically a villain, it's not his choice. He went down fighting and though he was raised into undeath, he still refuses to give up the belief that righteousness will prevail. Tragically, this is what makes him such a valuable weapon to the very evil he fought so hard, since through him the Lich King can control the force of the Holy Light.

* VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft. VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft has quite a few examples,this being a world where a LastStand is pretty common.

* PlayedForLaughs on Film/TheRussiansAreComingTheRussiansAreComing with Pete Whitaker, who keeps on being defiant and insulting to the Russians that have taken over his family's house (and his father who is helping them, to the point that Pete even calls him a Commie collaborator) out of a seriously misplaced case of PatrioticFervor (the Russians are stuck on the island by accident and wish nothing more than to leave, and Mr. Whitaker is quite willing to help them because 1) the Russians are peaceful and understanding and 2) the Russians are armed, and so it's not a good idea to anger them, like Pete is trying to do...)

If you ignore it and continue,, they'll ask for a truce but also try to bribe you with cash or technologies. If you ignore that and it's certain they're going to be utterly destroyed, they'll throw themselves at your mercy and offer you an alliance and all their credits and tech as long as you spare them. If you refuse at this point, they will cut all communications with you and fight from the last ditch.

* A non-deadly but still depressing example: The Nazis did not take power unopposed. In the final vote that would give Hitler power to make laws on his own (thereby eliminating the last legal barrier to his total control) the communists had already been rounded up and sent to prison or worse. The parties of the center-right had made deals with the Nazis (or so they hoped). The last party that wanted to say something against Hitler and was still present to do so were the social democrats. Otto Wels (1873-1939 in exile in Paris) held a speech culminating in the words "They can take our freedom and our lives. But they cannot take our honor". Given what happened next, this took guts.
