* The first story in the ninth issue of the 1946 ''ComicBook/KidEternity'' series has a journalist named Joe Hodges initially reluctant towards holding a killer called the Beagle accountable due to the risk of the Beagle killing everyone who tries to squeal on him, changing his mind after his doctor informs him that he has a heart condition so severe that he isn't expected to live beyond one year. Hodges gets rubbed out by the Beagle right after he was able to amass enough information from witnesses to hold the Beagle accountable, but Kid Eternity's intervention enables the Beagle to be stopped from killing any further victims and Hodges to finish the paper exposing his crimes posthumously.

* Played for as much TearJerker potential as possible by ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4'', where Snake's terminal illness and IncurableCoughOfDeath make him reckless, self-destructive, and occasionally outright suicidal, dead set on performing a StupidSacrifice. It's also made painful by the fact that his terminal illness means that even if he does survive all the stupid things he keeps doing to his body - which of course he knows he will - the beloved character himself is not getting out alive.

* Subverted in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins''. Near the end of the game, it's revealed that only a Grey Warden can kill the Archdemon, and only at the cost of their own life. Riordan volunteers, reasoning that he has been a Grey Warden for much longer than Alistair, [[spoiler: Loghain]], or the PlayerCharacter, and only has a few months left before the Darkspawn Taint takes him anyway. The other characters seem to agree with this. However, [[spoiler: Riordan ultimately fails to kill the Archdemon, leaving you in the same SomeoneHasToDie situation you were in before.]]

However, [[spoiler: Riordan ultimately fails to kill the Archdemon, leaving you in the same SomeoneHasToDie situation you were in before.before unless you took Morrigan's [[TakeAThirdOption Third Option]].]]
