* Theatre/HarryPotterAndTheCursedChild is set to feature Afro-British actress Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger. The Literature/HarryPotter fandom has been floating the idea of Hermione as black for quite some time now, and although the idea is still controversial (partly due to ambiguous descriptors -- her eyes are brown and her hair is dark and curly, but her face is described as various colors in different scenes), Creator/JKRowling (the author of the books) and Creator/EmmaWatson (a white actress who played Hermione in the movies) have spoken in support of this casting choice.

The Black Nerd is a countertrope to common racial stereotypes. Miost nerds are portrayed by races with the stereotype of being weak or bookish, such as whites, Asians, and Jews. Black people, on the other hand, are often portrayed as jive-talking Soul Brothas, Gangbangers, or anen. The Black Nerd upsets these trends by being, well, a Black Nerd. This is especially common in comedies, where writers are often reluctant to feed into racial stereotypes, but need flaws to make their characters funny. Giving a black character personality flaws which run counter to common stereotypes is a convenient way to add diversity, while trying to avoid accusations of discrimination.
