* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':
** ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'' anime:
*** During the Battle Frontier, Ash met Anabel/Reira. Her clothes, short haircut, and [[CrossDressingVoices ambiguous voice]], at least in Japan (and the Latin American dub, by extension), led him to assume she was a guy at first. Not even Brock, who successfully blew up Duplica's similar stunt in the first season, could identify Anabel as female when he met her. The dub screwed the effect up by giving Anabel the voice of a grown woman.
** Anabel's even more bifauxnen in one of the manga, to the point where people thought she got a [[ShesAManInJapan gender change]] due to [[http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a273/featherclaw/mangascans/lila_photographer.jpg the clothes]] she wore for half of the manga.
*** Also from the anime, Aoi/Angie in Diamond and Pearl. Gruff voice, [[{{Bokukko}} very butch appearance and speech patterns]], a [[BigEater big appetite that rivals the shounen hero]] and was not known to be female until she yelled "haven't you ever heard of ladies first?!"
*** The tomboyish Nozomi/Zoey also counts. For added effect, she always wears suits in when competing in contests.
*** Shion/Cher from an episode of the Best Wishes series. Her masculine traits led some fans question if the castle where she lives actually only accepts women inside, her being mistaken for a man at first.
** In the ''Manga/PokemonSpecial'' manga, Yellow is thought to be a boy by the rest of the main cast, right up until her hat gets blown off so they can see her ponytail. Red still thinks she's a guy... for about a year... causing some awkward tension with Misty...and setting up for the best reaction in the entire manga when she finally takes the hat off in front of him.

* Ren Radou from ''Manga/GetBackers'' fits this trope to a T, especially in the manga. In the anime, she's tomboyish but still recognizably female (even without having a voice). In the manga, she's...well, [[http://i27.tinypic.com/2zir314.jpg see for yourself]].

* ''Manga/OniisamaE'':
** Rei Asaka, who usually wears a black suit with lacy shirt. While her friend Kaoru wore clothes that tended to be almost vaguely unisex, she was [[BifauxnenAndLadette more of a]] {{tomboy}}. Besides, [[spoiler: Kaoru got a GirlinessUpgrade [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians after marrying Takehiko]] [[BabiesEverAfter in the end]] while Rei remained a bifauxnen until [[BringOutYourGayDead the end.]] ]]

* Kaori Makimura from ''Manga/CityHunter'' is often mistaken for a handsome dude, sometimes by all the pretty girls that [[ChivalrousPervert Ryo Saeba]] is chasing, due to androgynous good looks and a rather butch fashion sense. Later in the series, she starts wearing tight skirts to clear up the confusion.

* In ''Manga/DetectiveConan'', Sera Masumi is an AmateurSleuth who at first is mistaken as a TroubledButCute guy until she shows up in Ran and Sonoko's class wearing the school's female uniform. From then on she's mostly seen as a tomboyish BikerBabe, and at least one of her friends ([[AmbiguouslyBi Sonoko]]) has found her pretty in a boyish way.

* Akira from VisualKei band Disacode tends to wear men's clothing in performances and music videos in addition to sporting slightly spiky long black hair with a blonde streak and eyeliner. This helped by the fact that she is also a fashion model, having modelled for ''Kera'' and ''Kera Basu'' magazines along with starring as Narase Kaoru in the LiveActionAdaptation of ''Manga/AiOreLoveMe'' and as Uesugi Kenshin in stage show adaptations of ''VideoGame/SengokuBasara''.

* [[spoiler:Rei Ijuin]], of ''Franchise/TokimekiMemorial 1'', who has to pose as a boy in front of everybody due to a family custom, and this until her coming of age. It's a well-kept secret the [[spoiler: Ijuin]] family zealously protects, to the point that even her ''little sister'' [[spoiler: Mei]] doesn't know she's actually a girl!

Added DiffLines:

* Pete Burns, bisexual lead singer of Dead or Alive, managed to invert this trope. He had been cosmetically changing his appearance to resemble a woman before he married his wife of nearly 30 years. So feminine was he in his appearance already that when they applied for a marriage license, the clerk snarkily asked which one was the bride. Burns was not amused, recalling it as a "feeble joke" and the only thing that ruined such a perfect memory for him. In general, he was known for passing off a feminine look very well, at least until his surgery money ran out and he encountered one botched operation after another - his hobby was going under the knife to change his style whenever he felt like it, but that all changed when he met the wrong doctor. [[TearJerker Sadly, he was unable to repair the damage]] [[DownerEnding before he died.]]

* Dacey Ashcroft of ''SurvivalOfTheFittest'' version 3 is described as being very ambiguous in gender - especially since she is very tall for a girl and in general, just doesn't act 'girly'. That she deliberately perpetrates this charade doesn't help matters for the confused.

** Jame is mistaken for a boy on a regular basis, is declared to be officially a boy in a fair few contexts throughout the books, and is mistaken constantly for her twin brother (in low-visibility situations).
*** Subverted at one point in ''God Stalk'': The courtesan Melissand is flirting with her, and Jame assumes Melissand thinks she's a boy. She didn't--she knew Jame was a girl the whole time. (Melissand is more than a little gay--as we find out in the next few pages, she was having an affair with a princess.)
** Kirien is ''almost'', but not quite, a SweetPollyOliver--she never actually ''claims'' to be male. But she looks (and dresses) like a handsome boy, and lets people go with their assumptions.
** Jame, Rue, and Caldance--very different people--all call Brier "handsome", and with her short hair and neat, military dress, she falls right in the bifauxnen aesthetic.
