This led to a huge case of UnfortunateImplications, since another group of students at Columbine, known as the "Trenchcoat Mafia" for their affinity for similar coats, was put under a great deal of suspicion -- even though Harris and Klebold were peripheral friends of theirs at best. You can thank Harris' father for this urban legend, as he claimed in a 911 call that Eric was a member of the Trenchcoat Mafia and was sure he was involved for that reason. Some schools tried to ban long coats in the aftermath of Columbine on the grounds of claiming it was a gang uniform. In some cases, the [[IAmSpartacus student population]] responded by donning the garment ''en masse'' [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome to prove a very valid point]]. In any case, while the two [[OlderThanTheyThink weren't the first spree killers]] to wear them, trench coats became associated with mass murder for several years as a result of Columbine, with many school shooters afterwards deliberately emulating Harris and Klebold's choice of fashion. MoralGuardians were quick to suggest that the two were inspired by films featuring gun-toting, trenchcoat-clad protagonists, including ''The Matrix'' (still running in theaters at the time) and ''The Basketball Diaries''.

* In ''TabletopGame/{{Shadowrun}}'', armored longcoats are readily available and help you hide your weapons. Their inclusion in the game predates the codification of the trope and was intended to capture a "Wild West" feel for Awakened Seattle. Another great appeal of the coat is that it's among the better protective civilian armors: reaching higher levels of protection requires wearing military or security level gear, which is hard to get, expensive, and conspicuous. There is a reason longcoat and shades is the go to style for most runners. As an added bonus, the armored longcoat also makes it easier to hide small items on your person, whether it's a stolen data slug or a holdout gun. AwesomeYetPractical at its finest. Finally, the game's mostly set in Seattle and the weather has a bit of a [[CyberpunkWithAChanceOfRain reputation]].
