* Manga/BarefootGen. It looks like a Saturday Morning Cartoon in the vein of Anime/AstroBoy. It isn't. It's about Hiroshima.

* Manga/Bokurano looks like a normal shonen mecha series but it's far, far darker than normal and is a seinen.

Added DiffLines:

* VisualNovel/LiarLiar is a very cute looking, PuniPlush style visual novel with lots of bright colors. It's also a gorey game about a middle school girl trying to kill her boyfriend.

* WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo is a brightly colored, chibi-style cartoon spinoff that seems like a LighterAndSofter reboot to the 2003 WesternAnimation/TeenTitans.. So why the TV-PG rating, especially since the original was TV-Y7? Watch a few episodes and you'll quickly notice it lacks NeverSayDie, thrives of BlackHumor, and has a lot more risqué content.

* Creator/TerryGilliam's animations for Series/MontyPythonsFlyingCircus married images collated from early 20th Century shopping catalogues and similar found art from the period 1890-1920, with some very distinctly 1960's-70's surrealism. The collision of style and content makes them oddly memorable.

* WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow uses the angular graphic styles of cartoons of TheFifties and TheSixties, evoking memories of longtime kid favorites such as WesternAnimation/RockyAndBullwinkle and WesternAnimation/TheFlintstones. However it features some of the most graphic violence imaginable outside late-night TV (for instance, skin being ripped off and disemboweling), as well as some horrifying and grotesque facial expressions, tonnes of dirty innuendo, and enough ToiletHumor to clog the New York sewers. Like The Simpsons above, it was all the more shocking when it premiered back in 1991... on a kid's network no less.

** The succeeding stand-alone AlternateUniverse series to it, Anime/MobileSuitGundamIronBloodedOrphans also employs an art style consistent with most kid-friendly shonen anime, but with a degree of brutal realism and real-life conflicts turned UpToEleven.

* VisualNovel/MyHaremHeavenIsYandereHell lives this trope. If you were to check it out yourself, you wouldn't know offhand that a brightly-colored and upbeat novel like this will turn into a horror mystery novel, featuring some gruesome death scenes.

* Manga/OnePiece uses a bright, exaggerated style similar to many other shounen works, in a world where on the off chance the World Government isn't oppressing you, the Pirates are.
