''The Princess Diaries'' is a YoungAdult book series by Creator/MegCabot following the exploits of Amelia "Mia" Thermopolis, a teenager who goes to Albert Einstein High School and lives with her strongly liberal single mom. Her life changes drastically when her father comes for a visit. After being treated for testicular cancer, he is no longer able to have children. Because of this, he finally tells Mia a secret he, her mother, and her grandmother ("Grandmere") have been keeping from her for years: he is really the Prince of the fictional principality of Genovia. Because of his illness and treatment, Mia is now Her Royal Highness of the country and [[HiddenBackupPrince the heir to the throne of Genovia.]]

Upon first hearing the news, Mia objects to the idea of having to become a princess and having to rule over Genovia. She also fears that this new status will make her an outcast at her school and [[IJustWantToBeNormal would rather just be a normal teenager.]] The series follows Mia as she slowly adjusts to becoming a Princess and coming to terms with the idea of being a ruler.

In 2001, the first book was adapted into [[Film/ThePrincessDiaries a movie]] starring Creator/AnneHathaway and JulieAndrews. It was followed by a sequel in 2004, ''The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement''. Both movies have a [[BroadStrokes large number of changes]] from the novels, with the second not resembling any plot point of any of the books with the exception of Mia's mother marrying her teacher and having a baby with him.

Added DiffLines:

* RealityEnsues:
** Phillipe at the beginning of the book gets arrested for driving a racecar in New York, where it's illegal. Grandmere rightly worries that this will affect his election campaign chances.
** While Mia has forgiven Lilly for the hate site, and for everything, there is still that awkwardness due to what happened. As a result, Tina becomes Mia's best friend, and proves to be kinder and more loyal. Lilly in the meantime works to be a better friend, and help.

Added DiffLines:

* MySisterIsOffLimits: Mia worries about a genderflipped version of this from Lilly, leading her to make a list of worst things about liking your best friend's brother: Can't tell her. Can't tell him because he might tell her. Can't tell anyone else because they might tell him or her...

Added DiffLines:

**In the first book, she talks about how she would rather spend the apocalypse with Michael rather than Josh, but doesn't admit it to Lilly because she doesn't want to make things weird. She also constantly compares Josh Richter to Michael when she does end up on a date with Josh.

* Fiction500: Genovia is described in the first book as 'only a mile long', yet it's supposedly one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Added DiffLines:

** Though Mia is clearly attracted to him: there are quite a lot of references to Michael having his shirt off at home and she tends to pay attention to any physical contact between them

* NoExceptYes: When [[spoiler: Olivia]] comes home with a bloody nose and says she wants to live with Mia and Phillipe, her aunt says, "That's not what you want . . . to grow up to be some snobby, rich princess?"
--> [[spoiler: '''Olivia''']]: No! Of course not!
