* TattooConcealsScars: Mal'akh began his process of tattooing after being injured trying to rob Peter Solomon, which resulted in him being shot and lacerated after jumping in a river. Despondent after having his "perfect" physique ruined by the scarring, he's initially inspired to cover them with tattoos, but can't decide which to use. The tattoo artist gives him a book on the subject, and he goes overboard research mystical symbolism and decides to get his ''entire'' body tattooed, with the exception of a small blank spot on the center of his forehead.

* FridgeLogic: The story contains multiple instances of rather questionnable logic and plot decisions:
** [[spoiler:Given that in the end it is revealed that the hidden 'Word' is nothing more than the Bible (the 'word of god'), why did Peter not reveal this to prevent his mother getting murdered, or to save himself from being tortured and having his hand amputated?]]
** [[spoiler:Why did the Freemason set up a whole secret pyramid code and treasure hunt, just to point to the copy of a Bible - of which there are many copies?]]
** [[spoiler:The ancient mysteries are so powerful that they have to be hidden, to avoid them falling into the wrong hands. But at the end it is revealed that all religious texts (including the publicly available bible, a copy of which turns out to be the secret treasure, contains the instructions. This does not appear to be a good way of hiding anything.]]
** [[spoiler:How did the CIA know that Mal'akh was going to publish the video? He had only threatened Peter with it at the end, and had no reason to try to blackmail the CIA. Why would he have voluntarily also made the CIA his mortal enemy?]]
** [[spoiler:Did no one in the Free Masons ever notice his weird makeup and hidden tattoos? Not in any of the ceremonies involving robes, rituals, liquids, etc? For instance, pulling the hood off him would have removed some of his makeup and revealed him as a tattoo-ed freak.]]
** [[spoiler:If a single video of some of the ceremonies and people involved would be such a dramatic national security breach and likely to bring chaos to the USA - would the Masons not have slightly better security and e.g. check for hidden electronic devices?]]
** [[spoiler:If Mal'akh had so much influence (he was able to get the Architect to help him initially), and he know SBB13 was the hiding place of the pyramid - why did he not just go and get the Pyramid himself rather than dramatically place a severed hand in the Capitol? He then could have decrypted it at his leisure. Similarly, he could have just had Langdon delivered to his house (instead of the Capitol) with the keystone and tortured him there to methododically solve the puzzles - rather than set up a mad against-the-clock race.]]

Per TRS, this was renamed to Falsely Advertised Accuracy and moved to Trivia

* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: The BigBad's master plan is to [[spoiler:sacrifice his body so he can ascend and lead the Forces of Evil in destroying mankind]]. Since Dan Brown's previous novels have generally taken place in "the real world" (ancient conspiracies and [[DanBrowned shoddy historical accuracy]] aside), you'd normally wouldn't count on it, except this novel throws in all that stuff about mental energies and the Noosphere being real.

* DanBrowned (of course): So, so much. Try the confusion between the meninges and the brain itself late in the book, for one.

Aversions can only be listed for omnipresent tropes; re-written example because subversion seems to fit. Also, Zero Context Examples.

* GirlOfTheNovel: Notably averted, as the lead female character, Katherine Solomon, is fifty (making her closer to Langdon's age unlike the previous books) and her relationship with Langdon is a long-standing friendship. [[HotScientist But she's still attractive]].
* IHaveYourWife: In this case, "I have your best friend/brother."
* IdiotBall: It's been passed around a few times.

* GirlOfTheNovel: Notably averted, as GirlOfTheWeek: Subverted in this novel, unlike in previous Robert Langdon novels. Robert previously got romantically involved with the lead female character, lead characters of Literature/AngelsAndDemons and Literature/TheDaVinciCode, but in this novel, he's platonic good friends with the female deuteragonist, Katherine Solomon, is fifty (making her closer to Langdon's age unlike the previous books) and her relationship with Langdon is a long-standing friendship. [[HotScientist But she's still attractive]].
Solomon.

friend/brother". The villain kidnaps Katherine's brother (and Robert Langdon's mentor / good friend) to make her do what he wants.

* IdiotBall: It's been passed around a few times.

"It's this trope except it isn't" usually means it just isn't.

* CIAEvilFBIGood: Except that the FBI never shows up at all. [[spoiler:And the CIA is revealed to be not ''that'' bad themselves.]]

Added DiffLines:

* EunuchsAreEvil: BigBad Mal'akh is a castrate (he castrated himself in the past because he wanted to give up "carnal pleasure"). And calling him evil is ''putting it mildly''--he's consistently called a monster, and even the Devil.
