** There's also a bit where she knocks a cup of tea Vera has prepared for Audrina out of Audrina's hands. Vera later reveals to comatose Audrina that she's been drugging her. Sylvia's actions indicate that she knew this and was trying to protect her.

* MisplacedRetribution: Vera is justifiably incensed about her father ignoring her in favor of Audrina, but takes it out on ''Audrina'', [[spoiler: setting her up to be raped and making her life hell otherwise.]]

** Vera seems to be trying to make herself this to Audrina, with her frequent, almost desperate attempts to make Damian love her. Even her seducing Arden demonstrates this. At the end, when she leaves Audrina to die, she's even wearing her clothes, perfume, and makeup.

* AbusiveParents: Damian and Lucky. Even before [[spoiler: Audrina was raped]], Damian was a father who was satisfied only with being treated with unquestioned obedience and worship. [[spoiler: After the rape, Lucky scrubs Audrina's skin so hard during a scalding hot bath that she bleeds and was the more hysterical parent. She also seems to see Audrina as defiled and impure from then on until the {{Gaslighting}}]] Ellsbeth averts this trope more or less due to Vera being an EnfantTerrible.
** He is also almost relentlessly horrible to Vera.

* ImAManICantHelpIt: Arden's excuse for pretty much everything, including why he didn't remain a virgin until marriage even though he was engaged to Audrina, why he slept with Vera, why he raped Audrina on their honeymoon, and, of course, why he slept with Vera ''again''.

* SexIsViolence: Audrina and Arden get into a huge verbal and physical alteration, with her enraged at his infidelity and for perpetuating the [[spoiler: lie that it's SHE who was gang-raped as a child instead of some non-existent older sister]]. Somewhere along the line, the fight turns into, as she described it, "the greatest passion of my life, brutal passion that devoured and demanded."

* YourCheatingHeart: Damian cheated on Ellsbeth with Lucky and possibly cheated on Lucky with Ellsbeth--after he and Ellsbeth resume their affair after Lucky's death, Audrina wonders if they had been carrying on all along even while Lucky was alive. Ellsbeth accuses him of cheating on her again, citing his late nights, but he refuses to give her a straight answer. And of course, Arden's repeated infidelities with Vera.

* TookALevelInJerkass: Arden in the sequel. While no great shakes in the first novel (he can, at the most charitable, be considered a weak-willed, inconsiderate, passive-aggressive coward who nonetheless seems to genuinely love his wife [[spoiler: and regrets running away while she was being raped]]), by the time ''Whitefern'' happens, he's almost unidentifiable: a crude, unapologetic, condescending misogynist [[spoiler: who ''makes jokes'' about Audrina's gang-rape and subsequent trauma, attempts to bully her into compliance and keep her from her own money, rapes both her and her developmentally challenged sister, gets the latter pregnant, forces Audrina to go along with a scheme to pass Sylvia's child as their own, and turns out to have known the heretofore mysterious identities of Audrina's rapists and could have identified them years ago]]. The turnaround is so startling that some readers suspected the ghostwriter of CreatorBacklash, responding to decades of readers loathing the character by making him even more contemptible.
