''Battlefield Earth'' made it to the top of numerous bestseller lists[[note]]Scientologists bought it in bulk in an effort to boost sales of ''Dianetics''[[/note]], but critical response was less than enthusiastic, citing the novel's [[{{Doorstopper}} length]], [[ArcFatigue plotting]], and [[FlatCharacter characters]]. Nevertheless, the idea of [[TheFilmOfTheBook making a movie]] persisted until finally being realized in the year 2000, starring JohnTravolta (who personally bankrolled the project), Creator/ForestWhitaker, and Barry Pepper. It was a pretty spectacular bomb, but you can read about its tropes [[Film/BattlefieldEarth here]] if you're after some SnarkBait.

* TooIncompetentToOperateABlanket: Most everyone in the book. Terl permanently holds the VillainBall, and Jonnie more than once makes stupid mistakes, multiple times, such as trying three times to escape an area while being watched instead of waiting for the cover of dartness.

* GoneHorriblyRight: Jonnie was really just trying to destroy the main teleportation platform on Psychlo to prevent a counterattack. [[spoiler: He had no idea until ''much'' later that he had ''destroyed the planet'' and by extension the entire Psychlo empire.]]

* OnlyInItForTheMoney: The Chamco brothers steal a tank and defect to the human rebels, whom they think at first are a rival group of aliens attacking the Psychlo base. Nonetheless, they gladly help the humans...once they agree upon a contract. Their knowledge helps the humans counter the Psychlo nerve gas and even saves Jonnie's life on one occasion. [[spoiler: Unfortunately their cooperation is cut short when Jonnie asks them how to fix the teleportation platform and the catrist implants cause them to go berserk and try to kill him.]]

* MeaningfulName: Of course the hero is named Jonnie ''Goodboy'' Tyler. Among the Psychlos, Terl becomes paranoid of a new worker he recognizes as a government investigator named Jayed, a possible nod to J. Edgar Hoover in a nod to Hubbard's problems with the FBI. [[spoiler: It turns out that Jayed had been stripped of his position because of some unknown offense, and had used his skills to create a new identity and work on Earth as a miner. Terl's paranoia ultimately doesn't pan out.]]
