God, is she a bitchy ''chain smoker''. In her confession, she mentions that her boyfriend was her MoralityPet and the only one who ever loved her after her parents's deaths. Then, Torakura maintained the lie via keeping Todakuro locked in his countryside villa, telling him that Kaori (supposed to be in an American hospital) was going to get better. When poor Todakuro found out the truth from the guilt-ridden nurse who used to tend to Kaori, he went nuts with pain and murdered Torakura. AssholeVictim seems a bit lenient... ** As a child, Hisana was forced to find a way to survive in one of the worst districts of the Rukongai, so abandoned her baby sister to do it. Marrying Byakuya gave her the opportunity to search relentlessly for any sign of Rukia's fate, but it's implied to have driven her to the sickness that ultimately claimed her life. Her dying breath was used to beg Byakuya to keep searching for her and adopt Rukia as his own if he ever found her.
** Kanae Katagiri was an able Quincy warrior who was born sickly and frail of constitution. Nine years before Chapter 1, the Quincy King targeted all "impure" Quincies for ThePurge to restore his power. The power theft was too much for Kanae's frail constitution to handle; she collapsed into a coma that lasted for three months before she died. [[spoiler:As Uryuu's mother, her death is a [[TheLostLenore hidden, driving plot-line]], heavily connected to the death of Ichigo's mother, Ryuuken's [[HeroicNeutral isolation]] from the spirit world and Uryuu's actions during the Final Arc.]]
