* TheReveal that Mortimer isn't a Brewster by birth is one, because, as Abby and Martha explain, his mother was actually a live-in cook for them who was pregnant and alone when she was hired. By the time little Mortimer was born, the family had taken such a strong liking to the girl, and worried so much about her being on her own with a baby, that Martha and Abby's brother proposed and raised Mortimer has his own. Mortimer had ''no idea'', and it's clear not one member of the family treated him any differently than if he'd been one of them by birth. The only reason his aunts tell him is because they're worried about the legality of his signature on a document.

Teddy identifies him as [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Goethals George Washington Goethals]] who worked on the Panama Canal starting in 1907. Einstein salutes Teddy when Teddy addresses him, a slight, natural gesture that looks like Lorre came up with it himself.[[note]]Peter Lorre never served in the military but his dad did, in the Austrian Army Reserves, and Lorre would have seen some military etiquette as a child.[[/note]]

* As messed up as the Brewsters are, the level of love among Abby, Martha, Teddy, and Mortimer is quite sweet, especially in the film version.
