Then I realized two things: 1) the Quantum Bomb messed a lot of stuff up, language being funky is perfectly logical, and 2) the people in the books are specifically trying to avoid any woo-woo stuff. This just looks in keeping with the rather off-beat feel of the band, with maybe a touch of WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic, in-universe. Then you find out [[spoiler:Zal feels very strongly that LoveIsAWeakness, and has been intentionally avoiding it]]. And it makes sense.
