* The GiveMeASign gag: The obvious joke is that Joe asks for a sign from God, gets a pretty blatant one, and is oblivious to it because he's already made up his mind on the issue anyway. But, well, the sign is an earthquake, which aren't exactly uncommon in California, where the movie is set - the other layer of the joke is that earthquakes occur so often there that no one would bat an eye at one even if it were so suspiciously well-timed.
