Added DiffLines:

** This and ''2'' place heavy emphasis on gunplay- guns are much stronger in this game and it's immediate sequel then in the third game on, and the wide variety of guns available to the player creates incentive for them to use it. The third game made gunplay less important by giving the player more tools to close the gaps between Dante and his enemies and the style system made melee combat more important to maintaining a high rank.

* MinimalistCast: All in all there's only really four characters. Dante, Trish, Vergil and Mundus (of which Vergil get's no lines). You might also count Phantom and Griffon as characters since they get a few lines but that still only six characters in total. A lot less than typical stories. We don't even see regular NPCs outside of the enemies.

* BestServedCold: Dante's goal in the first game is to keep killing demons until he "hits the jackpot" and finds the one who killed his mom. When he finally confronts the demon in question and gets the killshot on him, guess what he says.

* {{Bishonen}}: Dante is a very pretty man.

* AlternateCharacterReading: Vergil's katana, Yamato, is officially spelled as 閻魔刀 (meaning "Sword of the [[UsefulNotes/BuddhistMythology Enma]]") but is a homophone of 大和 (an old name for Japan, meaning "great harmony"), symbolizing his traditionalist view as opposed to Dante's Rebellion sword.

* AntiFrustrationFeatures: The series invokes this in later games. In Mission 15 of the second game, the enemies become weaker each time you are unable to beat them in two minutes. In the third game, dying a few times on normal mode unlocks easy mode; in the fourth, choosing "continue" a few times in a chapter [[MercyMode automatically handicaps the enemy]] &#8722.
