* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Evanora and Theodora.even when trying to charm Oz is still quite aloof. Averted with Theodora, who's a ShrinkingViolet.

* AncientArtifact: Most witches, good and bad, appears to draw power from a [[MagicalAccessory jeweled artifact]]. Glinda uses a wand, Evanora has a huge jewel in a pendant, and Theodora has a ruby ring. Breaking the artifact deprives the witch of all her power and breaks certain enchantments; [[spoiler:that's what happens to Evanora at the end (though she appears to have gotten some powers back by the time ''The Wizard of Oz'' takes place).]] Oddly, though, the Wicked With of the West is never shown to have one.
* AndYouWereThere[=/=]ActingForTwo: As an homage to the original 1939 ''Wizard of Oz'' film, several actors play and voice characters in both Kansas and Oz.

Breaking the artifact deprives the witch of all her power and breaks certain enchantments; [[spoiler:that's what happens to Evanora at the end (though she appears end.]] This comes straight from the original Oz books; witches made power centres to focus their magic. If it was broken, she'd be left powerless but would still have gotten some powers the knowledge to make another. [[spoiler: This is presumably how Evanora managed to come back into power by the time ''The Wizard of Oz'' takes place).]] Oddly, though, the Wicked With of the West is never shown to have one.

* AscendedExtra: The Wicked Witch of the East, who's just a pair of feet sticking out from beneath a house in Dorothy's tale, is now the BigBad villain who instigates all the trouble in Oz.

* AscendedExtra: The Wicked Witch of the East, who's just a pair of feet sticking out from beneath a house in Dorothy's tale, is now the BigBad villain who instigates all the trouble in Oz. There is some justification since the canonical Witch of the East was a tyrannical ruler in both the original book and film.

* BaitAndSwitchBoss[=/=]RightBehindMe: Oz discovers Finley tied up in vines, begging to be freed before he gets eaten.

* BarrierMaiden: Glinda.

to:

* BarrierMaiden: Glinda.Glinda keeps the Quadlings safe with her magic bubble. [[spoiler: It's destroyed when Evanora and Theodora team up]].

* BreakTheHaughty: This is done to Evanora in the climax. She's completely fooled by Oscar's tricks and even runs inside in terror.

* ChewingTheScenery / LargeHam: When the great and powerful Oz "reveals" his true form, he ramps up his performance to magnificent levels. [[spoiler:Theodora]] rivals him quite well in this respect after [[spoiler:her FaceHeelTurn.]]

* EvilBrit: Evanora.

to:

* EvilBrit: Evanora. Notably she's the more naturally evil of the two Wicked Witches and the only one to have an English accent.

* EvilMakesYouUgly[=/=]RedRightHand: When a witch chooses to become thoroughly wicked, she dramatically loses her beauty, as seen with the Wicked Witch of the West and also [[spoiler:the true form of the Wicked Witch of the East]]. This may be a reference to Glinda's line in the original film that "[[BeautyEqualsGoodness Only bad witches are ugly]]."

* {{Fanservice}}: Theodora/[[spoiler:The Wicked Witch of the West]], Evanora, and Glinda wear some rather low-cut and revealing outfits, and are all incredibly beautiful witches. And as a tiny bonus, Theodora strips down to her corset during her transformation sequence.

* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Oscar and Theodora's DanceOfRomance in the field is accompanied by a shot tilting up to the sky, heavily implying that they did more than just dance.

* LargeHam: Oscar is a very over-the-top person, which is understandable, due to his background as a stage magician.

* LightIsGood: Glinda, obviously.

to:

* LightIsGood: Glinda, obviously. Even more so than the original version where she was red haired and wore pink. Here she is [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold blonde]] and wears white. Her magic is even color-coded as white.

* {{Retraux}}: As a nod to the original film, the scenes in Kansas are shot in sepia and have a pillar box aspect ratio. As soon as we enter Oz, we go into colour and the aspect ratio widens.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler:Theodora, rather wisely, ''doesn't'' hang around when all of the shit hits the all of the fans.]]

** Theodora's red outfit is awfully reminiscent of the [[Main/TheRedMage Red Mage/Wizard]]'s outfit from [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyI the first Final Fantasy]]. Right down to the wide-brimmed red hat with a white feather. (Granted, her ''entire'' outfit isn't red, but nonetheless...)

** When Oz tucks the China Girl into her bed, he begins to talk about his hero Thomas Edison, the Wizard of Menlo Park. He begins by saying, "Where I come from..." In ''TheWizardOfOz'', the Wizard used that same turn of phrase when talking to Dorothy and her friends.

* FakeWizardry: In the climax of the movie, Oscar "Oz" Diggs devises a plan that centers on making a big stage trick that the Wicked Witches will confuse for real magic. During the "final battle", he creates a fake apparition of himself with smoke makers and a projector (helped by the friendly tinkers) while claiming that "Oscar Diggs died so the great Oz could be free". Its scare tactic works greatly as, when the witches shoot fireballs at it, he appears to vanish but then reappears himself (because the tinkers turn the projector on and off by his command).
