Sharks are not able to swim backwards.

* BlackDudeDiesFirst: Averted - [[spoiler: not only is the first person to get killed a white man, but park manager Calvin (the main black character) survives the entire movie.]]
** A black man is however, the first--in fact, the only-- person to die during the final sequence.

* [[EvilDetectingDog Evil Detecting Dolphin]]: The dolphins act skittish and edgy as soon as the shark shows up, to the point where they seem to be explicitly warning Mike and Kay away from exploring a shipwreck, knowing that the shark is lurking nearby.
* {{Heroic Dolphin}}s: Cindy and Sandy rescue Kay and Mike from a shark after attempting to keep them out of the Galleon. Later, one of them gets in front of the shark, again allowing Mike and Kay time to escape. It initially appears to be a HeroicSacrifice on the dolphin's part, before InfantImmortality kicks in.
* HotScientist: Kay, the park's marine biologist.
* IdiotBall: Calvin Bouchard. He obviously has little to no working knowledge of marine life or structural engineering, yet constantly overrides his expert staff. First, he ignores Kay's orders as chief marine biologist to keep the captured great white in the tank until she says its ready to move again (killing the only great white in captivity shortly after doing so), then during the tunnel rescue operation he orders the pumps of the straining filtration pipes (where the shark is being contained)shut down because he's worried about the cost of replacing it.
** And look at the tank in which the shark is put on display. Baby or not, this is a 10 foot long great white, yet the tank is only about waist deep (endangering him) and there's absolutely no barrier between it and the spectators (endangering ''them''. Anyone could have foolishly jumped in or reached in, or the shark could have jumped up and grabbed somebody).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Fitzroyce is pompous and arrogant, but clearly very knowledgeable about sharks, saves Kay's life when the baby shark attacks her, and jumps right in to help when things go to hell.
** Bouchard also. Granted, everything that goes wrong is his fault, but he's genuinely concerned about the welfare of the park's guests and about Kay and Mike when the shark gets loose, and he doesn't hesitate to save the female technician during the climax.

* [[MamaBear Mama Shark]]: It's implied that the mother shark's behavior is partly out of revenge for the capture and death of her infant.

* WhatTheHellHero: Mike calls Calvin out on his insensitivity--constantly asking "Is the film okay?"--by pointing that all of the ''people'' (two of whom were nearly killed by the shark) are all right.

*** This is actually lampshaded by Fitzroyce when Kay mentions how huge the shark must be and he tells her that that's impossible.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Bouchard orders the filtration pipe pump shut down right in the middle of the operation to fix the underwater tunnels, fully aware that they were used to keep the shark confined. He's more worried about the cost of the pump if it burns out, and incorrectly assumes that the locked grate will keep that gigantic thing in the pipe.
