Critical reception was mixed to negative, with criticism generally being directed at the twist ending which, inasmuch as it might make Creator/MNightShyamalan proud, also generates a gaping PlotHole.

** It's worth noting that this twist is unique to the movie, although the original novel by Creator/DeanKoontz [[AdaptationDisplacement isn't that well known anyways]].

* TwistEnding: [[spoiler:The killer is in fact Marie; the truck driver is an alternate personality whom her normal side perceives as a seperate being, à la ''FightClub''. Marie had a lesbian crush on Alex, and her alternate personality murdered her family so nobody could come between them though she, believing the alternate personality to be a different person, would not have to feel any guilt.]]

* AdaptationDisplacement - A "derivative work becomes successful enough to overshadow the original work completely" is especially true here. Hardly anyone knows of Dean Koontz's Intensity, and if they do, they probably know of the book but not the [[TheFilmOfTheBook 2-part miniseries]]. It's why this has its own TV Tropes page, and Intensity doesn't. It's why this is available on Netflix and Blockbuster, and Intensity isn't. It's why this is available on Blu-Ray and DVD, and you can only find [[KeepCirculatingTheTapes illegally burned copies]] of Intensity, or on Youtube before it gets deleted due to copyright violations.
** In short, if you combine Laura and Ariel then call her Alex, [[spoiler: and then combine Chyna and Edgler and call her/them Marie,]] and take away all character development, you can pretty much guess what's going to happen from plot point to plot point.
