* HeartbreakAndIceCream: Aquamarine eats ice cream in the bath when it looks like it's not going to work out with Raymond. It also doubles as FreezeFrameBonus because the flavor is “phish food” by Ben & Jerry’s.

* AdaptationSuperpowerChange: Aquamarine can't change into a human in the book. In the movie, she can easily, only turning back when her legs get wet and at sunset.

Added DiffLines:

* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: Minor one. [[spoiler: Aquamarine can't stay on land with Claire and Hailey and has to return to the ocean]]. In the book, this was because she couldn't turn into a human on land and being out of the ocean weakened her (she'll actually die if she's out of the ocean for more than a week). In the movie, she can turn human on dry land and only needs to be in the water at night, which isn't much of an issue in a seaside village. [[spoiler: It's given a hand wave with Aqua saying she belongs in the ocean and has a family that needs her]].

Added DiffLines:

* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: Although ThePowerOfLove means Aquamarine doesn't have to go through with her arranged marriage, Claire and Hailey will still have to separate so that Hailey's mother can accomplish her dreams. Aqua also can't stay on land, meaning the three friends have to go their separate ways. She does however promise to visit, Raymond would like to get to know her better, and the girls do still have a wish they can use later]].

Added DiffLines:

* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler: Aquamarine has to return the ocean at the end, both to "clear the water" with her father and attend to her family. She does promise to visit her friends however]].

Added DiffLines:

* CerebusCallBack: More for heartwarming rather than tear jerking effect (although very bittersweet). Aquamarine is revealed to wear starfish as earrings because they whisper compliments in her ears. [[spoiler: She gives Claire and Hailey the starfish as a parting gift]].
--> "Starfish may be big suck-ups. [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre But they never lie.]]"

Added DiffLines:

* StumblingInTheNewForm: Mild version as she gets a handle on walking pretty quickly but the titular mermaid Aquamarine attempts to stand on one leg the first time she becomes human and promptly falls over, she also audibly (off screen) crashes through the storage area she initially is hiding in.

Sounds more like a character reaction

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Aquamarine believes that Ray will declare true love for her and solve the central problem. But he's only known her for a few days. He likes her a lot but he's a ''long'' way off big declarations like that and is understandably a bit put off at Aquamarine asking him about it after such a brief period of time.
