He's an enemy combatant trying to kill them and by extension, hinder their efforts to save the world. V isn't going to be winning any humanitarian awards (elftarin?), but it's not exactly out of nowhere.

It's not really disproportionate at all. Kanaya didn't really kill Gamzee and Eridan was the one who temporarly killed her and hurt her chances at reviving the race in the first place.
