Added DiffLines:

* ArbitrarySkepticism: Milo describes the Leviathan as probably nothing more than a sculpture to frighten the superstitious, even though they're already on an expedition to recover a lost advanced civilization.

Averted, but Mole is called an animal and a pet which Milo replies as, "Close enough.""
** Played straight with Oggy in the sequel.

* SecretTestOfCharacter: When Mr. Whitmore first gives Milo the Shepherd's Journal, he makes several doubtful comments as to its authenticity and reliability, as well as to the futility of any mission to find Atlantis. When Milo explains that he would ''know'' if it was a fake and that he would rent a rowboat himself if that was what it took to get an expedition going, Whitmore explains that that was exactly what he wanted to hear, and then offers Milo a place on the multi-million dollar expedition he had already been planning. In the sequel, the Dust Coyotes will spare the heroes the fate they dealt to the villian if they confess a secret they have kept. [[spoiler: As it turns out, had they revealed the secret (about Atlantis existing), the Dust Coyotes (who knew the secret anyway) would have concluded they cannot be trusted to keep secrets and would punished them accordingly.]]

* BrickJoke: Sweet passively gloats that his surgical saw could cut a femur in just twenty-eight seconds. Later during the race to save Kida...

* CurbStompBattle: For all their guns, the Ulysses and her fleet of subpods never stood a chance against the Leviathan, leaving only a few dozen survivors to carry on to Atlantis.

Added DiffLines:

** The Leviathan is a non-human example, having massacred nearly all of the 200-man crew aboard the Ulysses, and for all we know, it's still out there preying on unsuspecting trespassers.

* AppeaseTheVolcanoGod: Or, rather, the Stoneface God. In penance for attempting to use the Heart of Atlantis as a weapon, members of the King's bloodline are ritually bonded to the Heart every thousand years or so. It just so happens that by trespassing on the Heart's chamber, Milo's team ended up kickstarting it a little early.

* EvilIsPetty: They find Atlantis, that turn out to be still living civilization. It's hands down the greatest archaeological discovery in history which our heroes will be greatly rewarded for, but that's not enough for the [[FauxAffablyEvil otherwise friendly]] [[spoiler: Rourke. He wants to take the Heart of Atlantis, which would kill the Atlanteans, so that he'll be even more rich.]]
