* Moses argues with God multiple times when he threatens to destroy the Israelites completely, and manages to convince him otherwise. In reality it was probably a SecretTestOfCharacter (given that God knows everything), but still impressive. * Long, long before Moses, Jacob actually wrestled with God (or perhaps with an angel). After a long stalemate, his opponent realized that he would not give up and touched Jacob's hip, dislocating it. For this, Jacob gains the new name "Israel" ("Struggled/Persevered-With-God") as a reward for his stubbornness. ** Also, because of the way in which the angel defeated Jacob, observant Jews do not eat the sciatic nerve. Since the sciatic nerve is remarkably difficult to remove, most Jews simply did not eat the hindquarters of the animal, selling it to their Gentile neighbors instead.

Why would an omniscient being need to test anything?

This trope is human/non-or-relatively mildly powered vs god/godlike, not two angels against each other.
** Also, because of the way in which the angel defeated Jacob, observant Jews do not eat the sciatic nerve. Since the sciatic nerve is remarkably difficult to remove, most Jews simply did not eat the hindquarters of the animal, selling it to their Gentile neighbors instead. * In the Book of Revelations, an unnamed angel kicks Satan's ass and locks him up for a thousand years. ** Possibly the Archangel Michael? He defeated Lucifer once before during the rebellion and war in Heaven.

The verse in question is Rev. 20:1. Abaddon is mentioned in Rev. 9:11 and is either the warden of, or the chief prisoner in, the Abyss. By some intepretations, Abaddon may be another name for Satan himself.
* Abaddon, also known as Apollyon; is somewhat of a GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere in the Book of Revelations. A demon? angel? so powerful it kicks Satan's ass and locks him up for a thousand years.

moved Zeus entry from Religion to Mythology
* Zeus may have been a god, but Typhon was an ancient being endlessly more powerful than the gods themselves. Zeus dropped a mountain on him.
