* When compared to the movies, ''Roleplay/TheGunganCouncil'' is ''definitely'' more mature across the board. However, whether or not it beats out StarWarsLegacy depends on the writer and character.

* The fifth episode of ''WebVideo/DontHugMeImScared'', where there is no indication the trauma will be reversed, a lot more violence and gore, less jokes, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking a song that isn't quite as catchy]].

* Joseph Kahn's ''POWER/RANGERS'' does this for the ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' Zordon Era. It's actually a StealthParody of this trope, with the ultimate message being that no matter how much fanbases may like the idea of giving lighthearted kids' shows grim-n-gritty reboots, ramping up the violence, sex, and dirty language (even if it doesn't come across as forced) will not make the comical elements go away - if anything, it just throws them into sharper relief.

* Creator/RaymondSipe has a song about {{Cthulhu}} that [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLFHFWK5FJM pretty much does justice to its source]]. However, when you compare it to songs about forum places like /v/, /mu/, and even /mlp/, as well as many of his other songs he's done, and it makes its darker and edgier motif all the more surprising to see.

* WebAnimation/{{RWBY}} gets darker every season, third season left a lot of fans in shock for the dark turn the series have taken, with things going FromBadToWorse, lots of BreakTheCutie and [[spoiler: the first on-screen CharacterDeath]]. This is better illustrated by the opening lyrics, that get darker every season, the third season's opening's, When It Falls, first part is:
--->"Maybe it's red like roses,
--->Maybe it's a pool of blood.
--->The innocents will lay in
--->When in the end, you fail to save them.

* The flash series ''WebAnimation/MarioBrothers'' was much darker than the original games, as the very beginning had Mario trying to escape from something before it proceeds to a flashback.
** Luigi ended up killed during an ambush on King Koopa's forces, Koopa successfully kidnaps Princess Toadstool because Mario was busy mourning for Luigi. Koopa's plans with Toadstool involve using her to create mushrooms so he could effectively be immortal. After a final stand against Koopa, and successfully dethroning him, he ends up ''failing'' to save the Princess (resulting in her death by magma alongside Koopa), and the direct result was an eruption, getting to where the series started. Mario then faces the magma flow and dies.
