Microsoft Studios is the wing of Microsoft that handles the development and publishing of games for the UsefulNotes/Xbox, UsefulNotes/Xbox 360, UsefulNotes/XboxOne, UsefulNotes/MicrosoftWindows and Windows Phone platforms. It started back in 2002 as Microsoft Game Studios, but the name was changed to Microsoft Studios in 2011.
Microsoft Studios is arguably the fourth VideoGame company to be on the level of Creator/Nintendo, Creator/Sega, and Creator/SonyInteractiveEntertainment. While Microsoft's clout of popular exclusive video game franchises isn't as extensive as those three, they do have a few notable ones, with their current big four being first-person sci-fi shooter franchise Franchise/Halo,which, thanks to original developer Creator/Bungie, put the Xbox on the map; series currently developed by Creator/ThreeFourThreeIndustries third-person shooter franchise VideoGame/GearsOfWar,which the publisher bought from original developer Creator/EpicGames; series currently developed by Creator/TheCoalition famed sandbox game VideoGame/Minecraft,Microsoft acquired it and its developer Mojang in 2014; VideoGame/Fable was one of Microsoft's big four in the past, but it has since gone mostly dormant with its developer Creator/LionheadStudios shut down in 2016 and no new main entry since 2010's VideoGame/FableIII, while Minecraft remains actively developed and marketed to this day and semi-sim racing franchise VideoGame/Forza.which is currently divided between the original Forza Motorsport series and the 2012-introduced Forza Horizon series; Forza Motorsport handled by its long-time original developer Creator/TurnTenStudios, and Forza Horizon primarily developed by Creator/PlaygroundGames with Turn 10's assistance
