Keima is a 17-year-old student known throughout the internet as "[[AGodAmI The Capturing God]]"[[note]]"God of Conquest" in the English Dub[[/note]] for his unrivaled mastery of ''[[DatingSim Galge]]''. He vehemently claims to have no interest in reality or 3-D girls, instead preferring the company of his video game characters. Therefore, while a legend in the gaming world, in real life he's an anti-social {{otaku}} whom most students avoid. Despite his lack of real world social skills, he demonstrates immense confidence and remarkable intelligence, and is in fact [[TheAce at the top of his class in every subject]] [[GeekPhysique except PE]].

His life is changed completely one day when he unwittingly accepts a contract from hell that pairs him up with Elsea to capture evil spirits that are possessing girls in the real world. Using his vast knowledge and experience gained from playing hundreds of dating sims, Keima must win the hearts of young women in spite of his disinterest in reality.

At the start of the series, he's [[LonersAreFreaks isolated]], rude, thoughtless and inclined towards abusiveness. However, as time goes on, he goes through some remarkably steady development and shows a surprising amount of concern for the girls he captures.

* AccidentalPervert: On a few occasions he'll accidentally stumble in on girls like Haqua while they're changing, though he rarely cares. Occasionally, though, he invokes his bad luck in this regard in order to finish a capture more quickly.
* AloofBigBrother: To Elsie. His treatment of her is, at worst, AnnoyingYoungerSibling level.
* AntiHero: Keima is rude, antisocial and if left to his own devices he never would have begun the capture operations. However, over time, he grows invested in the work for its own sake as he grows to care more about the targets, making him more heroic over time.
* AscendedFanBoy: Unknown to him, he is the epicenter of the [[DatingSim Gal Game]] industry, to the point he and his site were responsible for the industry's re-invigoration while it was in shambles. Also he was asked to direct a game of his desire, but he refused in the end.
* {{Asexual}}: Matters of romance and emotions aside, Keima has no sex drive whatsoever.

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Thanks to his gaming experience, he's able to deduce many key aspects of his targets and instantly become an expert at any board game. He also uses this skill in academics, by reducing the lessons to a few important key points and predicting test questions. Finally, this is what he uses to generally get the gist of whatever situation he's in, allowing him [[TheChessmaster to plan his moves]] or [[XanatosSpeedChess make quick adjustments whenever his original plan starts to go out of track]].
* BadassBoast: Keima is quite fond of these, from "I can already see the ending" to "I will end this capture in X days". They are [[SpannerInTheWorks not always true, however]].
* BatmanGambit: The setup Keima uses [[spoiler:to out Fiore as an agent of Vintage]]. Bonus points for coming up with it [[XanatosSpeedChess almost immediately]] after meeting her.

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: During Kanon's capture he complains about her using stun guns. Fair enough, but then he proceeds to say that he wishes he could have a normal girl for a target for once. By the time the story gets to [[TheGenericGirl Chihiro]] being the capture target, he has absolutely no clue what to do since normal girls do not appear much in galge as main characters. Therefore, notwithstanding the eventual capture, he consistently fails to read Chihiro properly throughout the entire manga [[spoiler:(See BreakHerHeartToSaveHer entry for further details)]].
* BerserkButton: Anything that questions his status as the Capturing God. Also, do not mock or harm Yokkyun in any way.
* TheBGrade: Once has a minor breakdown because he gets a 99 on one of his tests. Not entirely for the usual reason in this case; he also has a deal with his teachers that he can play games in class as long as he gets perfect scores.
* BigBrotherInstinct: To Elsie, even though they're not blood-related. He'd deny it himself if asked, though.
* BishieSparkle: He can turn them on at will.
* {{Bishonen}}: While he's usually a nerd, when pursuing a target and downplaying his interest in games, the fact that he's actually quite handsome comes to light. In the first novel, [[spoiler:Yoshino Ikumi]] is surprised to see that he really is as handsome as [[spoiler:her sister]] described.

Regardless of the fact that she would want to be close to him. He's obviously very depressed afterward]].
* BrilliantButLazy: Subverted. Keima puts exactly as little effort as needed in anything that does not interest him… only said effort is just as much as needed to ''excel'' at such tasks. Particularly during capture operations, Keima sometimes withstands days and weeks of tedious menial labor just for the sake of setting up the needed scenario.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Most of the teachers just ignore his playing while in class as he gets the best grades anyway.
* ButtMonkey: Everyone loves to beat on him, ''especially'' the girls. Justified, considering he can be a bit of a {{Jerkass}} to...well, anything that has anything to do with reality.

* CharacterDevelopment: In general, he's gone from a {{Jerkass}} to a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. Indeed, one way of looking at it is that he's becoming exactly what the ideal hero of the dating sim is supposed to be like: Kind deep down, brave, determined and self sacrificing. He's also become willing to put more time and effort into the captures as well as being less flustered when things actually go according to plan. Several of the arcs also have more specific development such as:
** Kanon's arc appears to have him skip the easy option of just being the person Kanon relies on and instead both making her grow up and allowing her to keep being an idol, which she genuinely enjoys. It's hinted later on in the Tenri arc that this kind of solution to the problem would have made an unstable, shallow love and reopened Kanon's gap, so it's a good thing that he had started to mature by that point. [[spoiler:On the other hand, this does backfire about a hundred chapters later: It made her think Keima was just the observer type, causing her to hesitate too long to confide in him, which nearly got her killed.]]
** Chihiro's arc has him realize he couldn't just ignore the real world and pretend he's not part of it. Nor can he ignore the people in it and dismiss them as though he actually understands them. When the plot comes back to Chihiro, [[spoiler:he also agrees with Ayumi that he is 'the worst' for how poorly he handled the situation, once again because he falsely believed he understood her. He ends up in tears because he had to hurt her]].
** Jun's arc is the first time where he's willing to admit he actually cares about the personal problems of the capture targets. As he mentions in surprise to Nikaido, when he sees Jun upset for some reason he actually ''cares.''
** Tsukiyo's arc has him abandoning his earlier behavior of not wanting to put himself in danger by leaping from a building and [[VariableTerminalVelocity somehow grabbing her in midair]]. While Elsie was there to catch him, if she hadn't done that he would have surely died.
** He shows significant development in Akari's arc wherein he realizes living in an imperfect world isn't all that bad.

* ConsummateLiar: He's very good at pretending to be something else. Usually during a capture he has a completely different personality.
* CrazyPrepared: Keima's P.E. teacher tries confiscating his PFP before swimming. Keima then brings out another one. The teacher takes that one too. What does Keima do? He takes out 6 more all at once. Even as a kid, he had 8 portable game consoles and 100 spare batteries. They even came in useful.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Mock his dating sim based strategies all you like, ''they work.''
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Brown hair and brown eyes. He mentions briefly early on that in his school there's nobody with odd hair or eye colors[[note]]For whatever reason, he's ignoring Kanon, who he's already met[[/note]], meaning he's supposed to look normal.

* FlashStep: He does this to Ayumi in FLAG 163. The scene is the current trope image.
* ForgetsToEat: Once he played 2 weeks' worth of backlog games for 20 hours straight yet did not eat. In the end he hallucinated and sang, then got woken up by Elsie who then lampshaded the importance of eating. It happens again later, helping spark off the Chihiro capture after she badmouthed him.
* FreakyFridayFlip: In the 9-chapter Yui arc the pair switch bodies. Even funnier is when he went over to the "dark side of gaming" and started to play {{Otome Game}}s.
* FriendlessBackground: Played with. He certainly didn't have any friends, but that's because he didn't want any. When Jun sees him playing games alone at lunch, she assumes he must be too shy to talk to people.
* GeekPhysique: He's at the top of his class, is '''the''' [[RedBaron God of Conquest]], but his body is rather frail because he forgets to get himself in shape due to his obsession with video games. During arcs that require him to be more physically active, he is frequently shown getting exhausted.
* GenreBlindness: While normally he's incredibly savvy, some situations just don't ''work'' if he recognizes an obvious situation. For example, [[spoiler:failing to realize that in a MatchmakerCrush situation the actual target you're supposed to pursue is never who the matchmaker is pushing you towards]]. If he did realize this, the entire arc would fall apart or require a drastic resorting of how he considers relationships, such as properly recognizing Haqua and Diana for the {{Tsundere}}s that they are.
* GenreSavvy: He applies FridgeLogic from video games, and ''it works''. [[WrongGenreSavvy Usually]].
* AGodAmI: Keima calls himself the Capturing God and conducts himself accordingly.
* GuileHero: He's [[GeekPhysique useless in physical confrontations]], but thanks to his skill in strategy and seduction, pulls most of the weight in the series.

** He tries to invoke this in FLAG 238 [[spoiler:in order to dispel any thoughts on Tenri's part regarding the kiss between him and Kaori,]] but [[PlayedStraight later falls into another serious one]] in FLAG 239 [[spoiler:after bumping into Chihiro and Ayumi.]]
* HeroicRROD: Caused by exhaustion from trying to get 6 captures in 1 1/2 weeks. [[spoiler:Fortunately, Apollo cured his exhaustion and cold]].

** He's referred to as Otamegane by numerous people. The nickname is a shortening of {{Otaku}} [[NerdGlasses Megane]]. He's famous for being "the weirdest weirdo"
** He has to battle a different type of publicity issue when [[spoiler: Kanon, a famous idol,]] confessed to him in the middle of the class. Later, he embraces this to get results as quickly as possible because [[spoiler:people who still have their memories would think he's a two-timing jerk]] and get mad at him. Haqua calls him the worst of all men for his extremely manipulative behavior in this arc, though she shows she didn't really mean it moments later. Still, when that's what your biggest helper has to say about your plan then that's not a very good sign for your reputation.
* IGaveMyWord: Although Keima wants to blow off helping Chihiro's band study, he did promise that if Chihiro or Ayumi ever needed him he would be there for them. He grumbles about how he shouldn't have said that since they weren't going to remember anyway but he ''did'' promise.
* IKnowMortalKombat: It's remarkable just how well video games translate to reality for him.
* [[spoiler:ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Fakes this in order to provoke a reaction from Dokuro in the Time Travel arc, but it costs him one of his four 'lives']].
* InsaneTrollLogic: Unfortunately, insane trolls appear to run his universe, so he's usually at least pretty close to being right.
* InSeriesNickname: He has two; "God of Walkthroughs," or simply "God" in the gaming world, while his RealLife classmates call him "[[{{Otaku}} ota]][[{{Megane}} mega]]".
* InstantExpert: He defeats Haqua at a game she brought from Hell that he has never seen before. She hasn't lost [[http://www.mangareader.net/120-6006-7/the-world-god-only-knows/chapter-47.html in the last 100 years]]. She doesn't stand a chance against God.

After great amounts of CharacterDevelopment, he still shows a tough demeanor, but has become a lot more noble and compassionate. He also has shown to care about Elsie and his capture targets. * LogicalWeakness: Three of them.
** First, ordinary girls like Chihiro or Asami with no clearly defined traits confuse him.
** Second, the energetic {{Cloudcuckoolander}} type like Tooru, since they operate outside logic and all of his technique is based on said logic.
** Third, aggressive girls like post-capture Yui. He plays games where he chases after girls. If a girl chases after him, he's as inexperienced as the next person and gets extremely flustered, something Haqua eventually picks up on.
* LonersAreFreaks: Eventually averted. He's just self-centered and mostly grows out of that.
* LoveTriangle: There are two revolving around him at different points. In the first novel, he seems to do it as a sort of SelfImposedChallenge, though the two girls in question rarely get in the other's way [[spoiler:until Tooru sees him kiss Asami]]. Later and in the proper manga, there's a love triangle of Chihiro -> Keima <- Ayumi that becomes a huge snarled mess.
* LudicrousPrecision: Born on June 6 at 11:29 and 35 seconds and can memorize real-life events on minute intervals. He justifies this by the amount of memorization needed to complete video games on multiple arcs, so he has to have precision at maximum. Which makes perfect sense given the amount of time he has played his video games.
* MadeOfIron: With all the physical abuse he goes through when exorcising, Keima is obviously like this, crappy performance in P.E. notwithstanding.
* ManipulativeBastard: He's very good at playing with the expectations and emotions of others, though generally for their own benefit.

* NominalHero: Early on, Keima is only capturing runaway spirits because if he doesn't his head will be removed. CharacterDevelopment moves him away from this and by the time [[spoiler:Kanon is stabbed]] he's explicitly doing it because he's genuinely trying to do the right thing, but it's not clear when he really reached that point.

Also known as Elsie, Elsea is a low-level demon assigned as Keima's partner. Having served as a minor cleaning demon for most of her life, she's very inexperienced and lacking in confidence. She has a childish personality, is fantastic at cleaning and fixes food fit only for devils. She masquerades as Keima's little sister, but occasionally shows signs of having a crush on him. She literally idolizes Keima, often referring to him as "Kami-sama." She later becomes the left-handed bassist for Chihiro's band, the 2-B Pencils.

Over the course of the series, she has more or less graduated to being his real little sister. Apart from this, throughout the series she normally acts as a sort of plot device by using her robe.

Haqua is a friend and former classmate of Elsea's and graduated at the top of their class, receiving the prestigious Scythe of Testament in recognition of her efforts. Having always excelled at everything she did, Haqua was quickly promoted to the position of District Chief of Area 32 in charge of capturing Runaway Spirits, but since her promotion she has had a terrible record. With the help of Elsea and Keima, Haqua wins back her confidence and in turn begins developing feelings towards Keima. Her human partner is Yukie.

Following this, apart from being used for {{Tsundere}} antics, Keima seems to view her as both a more reliable source of information and occasionally a more competent partner to work with. Haqua later becomes Keima's temporary partner during the ''Goddess arc'' due to Elsea being pushed aside at the time.

Rather than letting her human partner do most of the work, like Elsea and Keima, she prefers to take matters into her own hands, sometimes with lethal means. Her results are impressive, though she often makes mistakes due to her impulsive nature. Her second appearance has her promoted to District Chief of Area 30-2, in essence becoming Elsea's boss. Her human partner is Ryou.

In general, Nora is selfish and whimsical, but she does mean well when she keeps her temper and arrogance in check.
