* SpiritualSuccessor: Two-fold.
** To The GunBuster: Both are humanoid SuperRobots formed by combining two other mechas, were both piloted by pseudo-siblings, are designed to be the ultimate weapon of humanity, insanely powerful versions of the basic mechas, both pull off the [[BadassArmfold Gainax Pose]] a lot and both are inspired by Getter Robo. (GunBuster is heavily based off the Getter Dragon and Gurren Lagann is based off teh base Getter Robo.) Reaches it's logical conclusion when the Gurren Lagann's third form, the one compared to a god, is essentially the GunBuster with drills.
** Speaking of, Gurrne Lagann holds an even greater resemblence to Getter Robo itself being powered by human evolution, both are crimson mechs, both being sentient to a degree and both constanly evolve. Reaches the logical conclusion as Gurren Lagann's second to last transformation is heavily remiscent of the Getter Emperor, the most powerful form of Getter Robo.

* ShoutOut: The way it's introduced is practically identical to how the Anime/GunBuster was first launched: slowly rising up in the [[BadassArmfold Gainax Pose]]. There are many similarities in their overall shape as well.

There are many similarities in their overall shape as well.well and both having homing laser attacks and both are revealed in teh wake of a close friend's death...Let's face it: It's the GunBuster with drills.

Added DiffLines:

* SpiritualSuccessor: To Eva Unit 01 being a darkly colored mecha that fights with it's bare hands, having a close tie with it's user and is powered by humans. Made all teh more obvious when Unit 01's Antithesis Gurren Lagann fights it as it's GoodCounterpart.

* OutOfFocus: After [[spoiler:[[HesBack Simon's rebirth]]]], the Gurren doesn't get any more solo action scenes, serving as little more than an extension for Lagann. The only time it actually ''moved'' without Lagann was [[spoiler: during Viral's FastballSpecial during the FinalBattle]]. It has the saddest justification: [[spoiler: Kamina has died, and the mecha has now lost its original characterization as Kamina's avatar while fighting. Thus, the focus shifts to purely Simon, who carries on for both of them, with Gurren being a part of Lagann just like Kamina remains a part of him.]]

The protagonist's main mecha, and the [[TitleDrop titular mecha]] in the dub [[spoiler: but only halfway so for the original series name]]. Formed from Gurren and Lagann, hence the name. Lagann drills through the canopy of Gurren, and Spiral Power causes the mecha to fuse, extending the limbs and joints of the mecha until they appear muscular and humanoid. Capable of sprouting an insane number of drills in various shapes and sizes, depending on the Spiral Power and willpower of the pilots, and generating defensive barriers. Piloted by two people- one in the head, one in the torso.

* SpiritualAntithesis: To [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Evangelion Unit-01]]. Both are the flagship mecha and SeriesMascot of their respective franchises, and piloted by their respective main characters who also have this type of relationship. However, Unit-01 is a HumanoidAbomination that looks very monstrous and poses more of a threat to Shinji and the world as it becomes more powerful, while Gurren Lagann is a bona fide SuperRobot but looks very humanoid, and its becoming more powerful and gaining new alternate forms reflects Simon's own growth as a person, as a man and as a leader. [[spoiler:Eventually, Unit-01 becomes a catalyst in the ''destruction'' of humanity, while Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann nearly acts as its ultimate ''savior'' - but in both cases, the pilots themselves are the ones who deal the "finishing touch".]]
