A half-elf who works (and lives) in the basement of the Imperial Research Academy in Sybak and conducted experiments on Presea [[spoiler: specifically, the Angellus Project]]. Though she's cynical and a little [[BrokenBird broken]], once she sees the genuine friendships Lloyd and the other have with Genis and Raine, she promises to free Presea from the experiment. Later she's arrested for assisting Lloyd's group, who are wanted criminals, and sentenced to death. Once rescued by the party, she returns to her birthtown of Ozette and reveals her origins [spoiler: she is actually the Pope's daughter, which is why she was involved in a Desian project]]. You see her one more time in an optional sidequest when Princess Hilda is kidnapped and the Pope demands Zelos in exchange, but it turns out to be a drugged-up Kate in disguise. [[PetTheDog Zelos then allows her to stay at his mansion while she recovers.]]

* DamselInDistress: Colette is kidnapped twice during the course of the game. [[spoiler:Well, three times if she's the VictoriousChildhoodFriend.]] Played straight 24/7 in the anime, in which the other characters don't let her fight.

* DamselInDistress: Colette is kidnapped twice during the course of the game. [[spoiler:Well, three times if she's the VictoriousChildhoodFriend.]] Played straight 24/7 in the anime, in which the other characters don't let her fight. Much of the plot is also driven trying to cure Colette's various sicknesses, ones she usually refuses to tell the party about.

* ContrivedClumsiness: An especially obvious example, but when Lloyd and Genis stop by the Iselia human ranch and attack some Desians when they're hurting Marble, Genis uses fireball from a distance, then Lloyd runs across the top of the fence so they'll chase him. Genis, who is supposed to quietly sneak out the other way, suddenly trips ''over nothing'', causing the Desians to almost notice him, forcing Lloyd to go back and fight them, which means his face is seen on the security cameras and gives Forcytus an excuse to attack Iselia the next day. [[ForWantOfANail All that because Genis suddenly turned into]] [[TheKlutz Colette]] for a second.

* PetTheDog: In spite of his gruff personality, he still mentors Lloyd when he tags along on the Journey of Regeneration. He was hired to protect Colette, but he agrees to healing Sheena when the party encounters her in a devastated Luin, despite the fact she's a hired assassin.

* AbusiveParents: A downplayed version and perhaps a case of ValuesDissonance, but Raine has a habit of slapping Genis and Lloyd upside the head when they annoy her, not to mention the infamous spanking she gives Genis in the Martel Temple (she also kicks Lloyd hard enough to send him flying into a wall). [[FridgeBrilliance Given that she had to raise Genis when she was only a teenager, this might explain why she's sometimes more of a disciplinarian than she needs to be.]] Not to mention, Dirk punches Lloyd when they argue about Lloyd going near the Human Ranch, so it may be that corporal punishment is simply more common in Sylvarant, though it's interesting to note that Raine never does anything like that to [[TheDitz Colette]].

* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: In her (optional) fight with [[spoiler: Kuchinawa.]]

* AnimeHair: Giant pink pigtails, to be precise.

* IdiotBall: [[spoiler: In the dungeon after Zelos' betrayal, the party fall victim to several traps that leaves Lloyd the last one left. Presea's trap involves her getting snared by vines when she opens the door to the exit. However, Presea still has an arm free and could have used the knife on her belt to free herself. This is never brought up during that cutscene.]]

This is never brought up during that cutscene.cutscene, nor any other time.]]

Added DiffLines:

* Trigger: It's not explicitly mentioned and he handles himself well in Flanoir, but it's mentioned that whenever it snows in Meltokio, Zelos will suddenly decide to go "on a pilgrimage". [[spoiler: This is because it was snowing the night his mother was murdered in front of him, so he likely can't stand being around it, at least in Meltokio.]]

** He also gets a good attack on Magnius in Palmacosta, which is enough to force him to retreat.

* BadassBoast: At the Temple of Lightning:
--->'''Sheena''': For the sake of everyone who risked their lives to protect me, Volt - ''I demand your power!"''

* HiddenDisdainReveal: In Welgaia, [[spoiler: Presea is by far the most susceptible to the illusions designed to break the party, revealing quite a lot of resentment at Regal for the MercyKill of Alicia. This is even foreshadowed at Alicia's grave when Presea says she will "try not to think of Regal as her enemy", but it's clear she hasn't forgiven him at that point.]]

* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: He's not above using his status as the Chosen to get what he wants, though it's usually in the party's best interest, such as managing to get a Key Crest from a stingy vendor in Sybak.

* NiceGuy: Even when the party regards him with outright suspicion and hostility initially, he's nothing but polite and friendly and is a good person overall.

Tropes associated with Kate:

* BasementDweller: Not of her own choice, mind you.
* BrokenBird: The poor girl has it rough, even when you do rescue her.
* DamselInDistress: The party has to save her from Meltokio's Coliseum after she's arrested.
* FantasticRacism: She's the first taster we get of the horrific treatment of half-elves in Tethe'alla - despite being [[spoiler: The Pope's daughter]], she is forbidden from leaving the laboratory in Sybak, ever, and is sentenced to death for letting Lloyd, Zelos and the other go.
* HotScientist: In a NerdsAreSexy kind of way.
* MoralityPet: To Zelos, who lets her stay in his mansion (in his ''bed'', no less) and acknowledges that she's a victim in the whole situation and he must use his influence as the Chosen to abolish the discriminatory laws against half-elves.
* NotSoDifferent: From Colette, as she was willing to do highly questionable things in order to please her father.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Whoever her mother was, Kate clearly took after her in the looks department.
* WellDoneSonGuy: [[spoiler: She desperately wants to be loved and acknowledged by her father, the Pope, but he's disturbed by his half-elf daughter and only talks to her when he needs something.]]
* YouGottaHaveGreenHair: Turquoise, though AnimeHair seems to be par the course for half elves.

Although she's trying to kill Colette, her villain cred is severely dented by her taking time off from Chosen-killing schenanigans to go on a SideQuest to heal an injured man and play hide-and-seek with the children of Luin. For double irony points you can choose to make Lloyd help her with the former, though it does prove to be plot-related as Pietro knows how to sneak into Kvar's ranch.
