As such he was supposed to become the strongest became a target for Junko and a living symbol of hope. Then Junko had other plans for him...either way, he was not happy to have been used by Junko or even by Hope's Peak Academy. Peak, and being used as a tool by both sides has embittered his outlook considerably.

* UnexplainedRecovery: Even after being pumped full of lead by Monokuma, she returns in the next chapter with little explanation besides claiming that she cannot die. It's revealed in Chapter 5 that she has 10 (originally 11) copies of herself in the house. Two more blow up trying to kill Monokuma and the rest are destroyed with Chiaki during her execution. In Chapter 6 this trope comes back in full force, when Usami returns due to the students' [[TakeaThirdOption determination to find another way]] and defeats Junko's AI

** That's the ''censored'' version, too. The uncensored version states that [[spoiler: one of the female students, implied to be Mikan, had their reproductive organs replaced with Junkos, and then tried to get pregnant, believing that this would result in them carrying and giving birth to Junkos child.]]

** He brought AI Junko into the Neo World Program to test if the real Chiaki's hope was stronger than Junko's despair, which draws some parallels with Nagito pitting his classmates' "hopes" against each other.

* TragicVillain: The reason he became TheAce was because he wanted to be recognized as someone special, someone worthy, but all it did was utterly ruin his life. All the talents he was given made the world so dull to him that it was easy for Junko to [[CorruptTheCutie corrupt him]], and he became her UnwittingPawn to help her bring about the end of the world. He's [[LackOfEmpathy apathetic]] to the point that he can't be bothered to save the world he was supposed to give hope to, and has become completely bitter to the school he once adored for how they used him. [[spoiler:And the one person who could have helped him, the one person he actually cared about, was murdered by Junko.]] He has lost ''everything'' for what even he sees as absolutely nothing, and has completely given up on himself, a kid who was supposed to have such great success in his life, [[EmptyShell but instead has barely any trace of humanity left within him.]] [[DarkAndTroubledPast His life hasn't been a very pleasant one]], though he did invoke some of it on himself, and most likely without even realizing it.

* OhCrap: Her reaction to Hajime rebounding from trying to [[BreakThemByTalking break]] him, she recognizes him as Izuru (strongly implied Izuru and Hajime have [[SplitPersonalityMerge merged]]) and begins to freak out. She clearly wasn't expecting Hajime to snap out of it, or Izuru to show up in the game at all(she calls him a glitch/computer bug).

* AntiVillain: He only starts the killing trip for a mix of getting answers and getting back at Junko, not out of any sense of malice. Combined with his DarkAndTroubledPast and lack of questionably extreme action, he's quite probably the least evil and most sympathetic of the franchise's masterminds.

* PragmaticVillainy: Probably the only reason why he doesn't come off as monstrous as Junko; he finds most things very ''boring'' and would probably see no point in being sadistic, or going out of his way to get any thrill from most of the crimes he commits. Such as his desire to get revenge for Junko using him: the survivors of the game weren't exactly his target, but he didn't go out of his way to keep them out of harm's way at all, or even help them at all (at least until possibly towards the very end of trial six, and that's a bit of a stretch).

He even has a bit of SelfDeprecation for himself, such as saying he has [[BrokenAce no talent]], that even he has no idea how to beat [[BigBad Junko Enoshima]], and that he refuses to do a HeroicSacrifice because he's aware that no one would even thank him for it.
