* AmbiguouslyEvil: It is ''very'' unclear on what his motives or goals were, and all the known information on him coming from [[UnreliableExpositor Junko]] doendoesn't help. ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'' finally clears everything up, though (long story short: no, he wasn't evil, but he certainly wasn't very heroic either).

* ApocalypseMaiden: After killing the student council, it was broadcasted to the reserve course students and they all committed suicide, and thus kick starting [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt "The Worst Most Despair Inducing Incident of Mankind"]].

* EvilSoundsDeep: His voice is slightly deeper(along with having a CreepyMonotone) than Hajime's.

* LivingMacguffin: After the operations, he was supposed to become the strongest symbol of hope, then Junko had other plans for him...either way, he was not happy to have been used by Junko or even by Hope's Peak Academy.

* AffablyEvil: Not in so much that he's ''friendly'' (he isn't), but he speaks in a fairly polite, low-down manner (using "boku").

* AmbiguouslyEvil: It is ''very'' unclear on what his motives or goals were, and all the known information on him coming from [[UnreliableExpositor Junko]] doen

* BrutalHonesty: Has no problems telling Nagito to his face that he finds him to be a boring person.

* DespairEventHorizon: Junko threw him over it in the past, causing him to be the way he is.

* HeWhoMustNotBeSeen: For a while, it isn't until during Chapter six that we finally see his identity. Even in the prequel he's been mentioned, but never actually seen by anyone.

* {{Jerkass}}[=/=]AffablyEvil: The way how he speaks and acts is a mix of this.
* KickTheDog: By Chapter 0, we already know how bad Nagito’s self-esteem is, and how he’s usually treated by others, before Izuru departs, when Nagito asks if they’ll ever meet again, Izuru states that there’d be no point. Why? He tells Nagito that he, along with his thoughts and talent, bores him. Ouch.

* TragicVillain: He's a FallenHero who has [[DespairEventHorizon lost]] [[BreakTheHaughty hope]] [[BreakTheBadass in]] ''[[VillainousBSOD everything]]''. He could've made humanity better, but the world had already become so dull to him that it made it easy for Junko to [[CorruptTheCutie corrupt him]]. He was her UnwittingPawn to help her start ''everything'' before even the prequel took place. He also became TheAce when he was [[UsedToBeASweetKid Hinata Hajime]] because he wanted to be recognize as someone special, and not be worthless. Only to throw humanity, and even himself into despair. He's become [[LackOfEmpathy apathetic]] to the point that the world he was supposed to give hope to, he rather it just be destroyed completely. He doesn't even have any empathy towards the school he once adored, if anything, he's bitter towards them for using him. Being forced to kill most of the student council had only pushed him further into having no remorse into becoming a SerialKiller. He has given up on himself, a kid who was supposed to have such great success in his life, [[EmptyShell has barely any trace of humanity left within him.]] [[DarkAndTroubledPast His life hasn't been a very pleasant one]], though he did invoked some of it on himself, and most likely without even realizing it.

* AllLovingHero: He rebels against the higher-ups of the Future Foundation so he could attempt to rehabilitate the remnants of Ultimate Despair, instead of simply killing them as ordered.
* BigDamnHeroes: Twice, since he first "saves" the Ultimate Despair against the Future Foundation's wishes by putting them in the program and then comes into the program to save them when everything starts going wrong.

* NebulousEvilOrganisation: This is what Monokuma initially presents them as, calling them the "World Destroyers" and blaming them for the apocalypse following the Despairing Incident. Since this is coming from [[UnreliableExpositor Monokuma]], the [[SubvertedTrope subversion]] is inevitable.

A group of Hope's Peak Academy students that fell to despair during their time at the school, and consequently fell prey to Junko's influence, to the point of accepting her Despair-based mindset as their own. The known members consist of Junko Enoshima, the original and true Ultimate Despair (as well as the Ultimate Fashionista/Analysis Girl), her sister Mukuro Ikusaba, the Ultimate Soldier, Izuru Kamukura, the former Ultimate Hope, and all the members of the Island's School Life of Mutual Killing aside from Chiaki Nanami.

A student in Hope's Peak's reserve course and friends with a few of the students that made it onto the island (especially Mahiru.) After numerous threats made by Fuyuhiko's sister towards Mahiru, Satou confronts her about it, though the conversation eventually turns violent, with Satou eventually killing Fuyuhiko's sister and pinning the blame on a pervert who'd been in the news lately. Though Mahiru knows who the real culprit is, she keeps Satou's identity a secret, though Fuyuhiko finds out anyway and kills her. The whole story is eventually recreated in Monokuma's Twilight Syndrome game, causing Mahiru's murder as Sato's accomplice.
