* MusclesAreMeaningless: Zig-zagged. On the one hand, Kenshin is a very a scrawny man who is never seen working out, yet is peerless as a swordsman, relying on technique and agility to surpass much larger and bulkier opponents. On the other, he's comically weak without a katana in his hands, and his slight frame is ill-suited to the rigors of his extreme sword style. Going all-out puts a serious strain on his health, and his master, who is [[HeroicBuild quite buff]], warns Kenshin that if he doesn't strengthen his body, the style will destroy him.

In Megumi's medical opinion, Kenshin can only handle a few more years of the strain that the style will destroy puts on his frail body. [[spoiler: In the epilogue, Kenshin has retired from swordsmanship because his body has deteriorated to the point he can no longer fight. As a pacifist with a family, this hardly troubles him.]]

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the manga, he ''vehemently'' refuses to rescue Megumi because of her (forced) help in making opium that led to his friend's death. In the anime adaptation, he ''stops'' her from committing suicide and gives her a speech about she should live in order to atone for her sins.

Threaten [[LoveInterest Kaoru]]-- be stupid enough to do that and Kenshin won't hesitate to give you ''[[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown a beatdown with his bare fists]]'' to get it through to your head that '''you don't lay a finger on Kaoru.''' * RedemptionEqualsAffliction: While on an assassination mission, Kenshin, received a cut to his face from his target's bodyguard (whom he immediately dispatched as well). Because the cut refused to heal it was theorized by Kenshin's peers that he had been struck by an innocent man and his wound was penance. The wound only finally stopped bleeding some months later when the famous cross-shaped-scar was completed [[spoiler: by his dying wife, who he had accidentally struck during a battle (and who had been the fiancee of the man he murdered before)]]. Kenshin holds the belief that the cross-shaped-scar will vanish when he has fully atoned for his sins. He also doesn't believe that is possible [[spoiler:though by the end of the manga it has indeed begun to heal]].

* ActionGirl: Depending on your viewpoint and on the story arc, she is either this or FauxActionGirl. Averted in the 1996 TV series and to a lesser extent the live action movies.

** The overall assessment, generally, is that she's a very competent ''kendoka'' and would be a challenge for any normal person to fight. The problem is that the story is populated by ''freaks of nature'' rather than "normal people" - it's not too dissimilar to someone trying to be a BadassNormal in an ''X-Men'' comic (which was a major influence on ''RK''). Any time Kaoru gets a chance to square off against comparatively normal humans (with the TV show and LA movies giving her more such moments), she manages to make quite a showing for herself.

* BrutalHonesty: As a teenager, he doesn't shy from pointing out the fact that if the students of a dojo he was visiting were better, they wouldn't have been taken hostage. He subsequently puts them through TrainingFromHell to remedy this, as non-stop screams were heard for the entire month he was there.
