* GlassCannon: Apollo is strong, fast, and has decent stamina but can't take lot's of punishment. Apollo is an interesting version of this trope as he doesn't really have a glass jaw however his ability to take damage is merely average. Given the weight class he's in and how powerful some of the fighters are (like Rocky), he can't really afford to let his opponent land many solid shots.

Given the weight class he's in and how powerful some of the fighters are (like Rocky), he can't really afford to let his opponent land many solid shots. It's notable that he did fine in his rematch with rocky until about round 6 when rocky managed to get in 1 or 2 solid shots to his body. From round 7 on apollo started taking more and more damage and by round 12 couldn't use his footwork and his face was severely swollen. He even needed to hold the ropes in the final round to throw some punches.

* LightningBruiser: Faster and more skilled than Rocky, but doesn't have Rocky's legendary endurance.

* LightningBruiser: After Apollo trained rocky in all the more complicated aspects of boxing Rocky becomes a LightningBruiser MasterOfAll with the ability to fight in close and far away, use a fast but strong jab to confuse and wear out his opponent, has agile footwork and the ability to constantly use feints, and both effectively block and avoid his opponent's punches.

* OnlySaneMan: In both ''Rocky I'' and ''II''. While neither Apollo nor anyone on his team is insane, Duke is the only one who sees how dangerous Rocky is. He's trying to do his job as Apollo's manager (protect Apollo and plan his schedule very carefully so that there are ''no'' surprises). The problem is that Apollo ''is not letting him do his job.'' Duke warns Apollo to stay away from left-handed fighters ("he's a southpaw. I don't want you messing with no southpaw. They do everything ''backwards''"). Apollo dismisses his concerns. When he sees Rocky on TV using a side of beef as a punching bag and ''breaking the ribs'', he's clearly disturbed, but even more disturbed that Apollo dismisses his concerns ''again'' and does not even want to take a moment to watch a man that he's going to step into the ring with. In the fight, he's has to scream into Apollo's face that Rocky is taking this fight seriously ("This guy doesn't know it's all one big show! He thinks this is a fight!"). When he's yelling this at Apollo, Apollo is barely holding back a BSOD, and starts taking the fight seriously. In Rocky II, Duke again warns Apollo to just let things go and walk away from a rematch, but Apollo's pride and ego just won't let him do it. In the final round, Duke ''screams'' at Apollo that he has the fight won on points, all he has to do is jab and move and stay away from Rocky, and he's won. ''Again'', Apollo refuses to listen, goes for the knockout, but in doing so he gives up his reach advantage (which Duke had just warned him not to do) and has to get close enough for Rocky to brutally wear him down and win by knockout.
* PutOnABus: He hasn't been seen in ''Rocky V'' after the beginning scene, and has practically disappeared from existence then (probably so that the name "Duke" is mentioned to a new character, and not to him).

* GlassCannon: Kinda. Stamina is more his weakness than an inability to take a punch, but still, he's the only one of Rocky's challengers to suffer an early KO.

See also: Uniquely among Rocky's opponents, he actually knocks the Italian Stallion out, ''in the second round.'' [[spoiler:In their rematch, rather than a dramatic fifteen-round battle, Rocky manages to fell him in three.]]

* OnlyInItForTheMoney: He doesn't care if one match with Rocky could possibly disable him, or even kill him. What matters to him is that he profits from the match, and he'll do anything to make that happen.

What matters to him is that he profits from the match, and he'll do anything to make that happen. Sometimes, he's so ''open'' about his greed and the pursuit of money that he sounds like a CardCarryingVillain.

** In ''Rocky IV'', Rocky feels like he has to fight Ivan Drago, even an unsanctioned match for no money, all to [[spoiler: avenge Apollo's honor]].
