!!Widow Lucas/Granny
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Granny_Lucas_8581.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:346:'''Widow Lucas:''' ''"I don't want her to have that burden. It's a terrible burden."'']]
[[caption-width-right:346:'''Granny:''' ''"Welcome to Storybrooke."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Beverley Elliott

The strict, yet loving grandmother of Red Riding Hood. In Storybrooke, she's the owner of the local bed-and-breakfast and diner.
----

* ApronMatron: To her granddaughter Ruby mostly, and as the owner of her own diner she also has a literal apron too.
* {{Badass}}: Granny turns out to be this and was one her whole life.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She can turn from a strict, but loving, grandmother to threatening people with her crossbow pretty easily.
* CoolOldLady: In the Enchanted Forest, she puts a group of enraged villagers and hunters in their places, and she wields a crossbow with efficiency. In Storybrooke, she runs a Bed 'n Breakfast AND a Diner, not to mention appears to like motorcycles and still like cute guys, when she tells Emma "If you won't, I will!" when August offers Emma a ride on his motorcycle.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: When she was a child, her father and brothers went out to hunt and kill the wolf that was terrorizing their village to protect her. However the wolf manged to overpower and kill them. Granny, who was watching from the roof, accidentally fell off and rolled right in front of the wolf. The wolf marked her and later turned her into one. The wolf was revealed to be Red's grandfather.
* DeadpanSnarker: So much so that fandom has nicknamed her [[FanNickname "Sassy Granny"]].
* GoodIsNotNice: Has shades of Type IV. As Snow says, she's kind of intense, but there's no doubt she's one of the good guys.
* GreenEyes: Of the spitfire and magic variety, since she is surprisingly violent despite her age and was a werewolf in her youth.
* IdiotBall: Granny not just telling Red that she needs to wear the hood to resist becoming a werewolf, which costs people their lives. She tries to {{Handwave}} it by saying she didn't want Red to have to live with this knowledge about herself, but is this really such a bad thing for Red to know, if all she has to do to stop it is to wear a red cloak one night a month (maybe three, if the night on either side counts as well--still a low number)? There is no way Red wouldn't eventually find out, and she certainly would rather have been able to stop her rampages herself, than find out an occasional, believed-innocent breaking of the rules resulted in people dying. Granny even [[LampshadeHanging admits how stupid she was]].
* ImprobableAimingSkills: She's able to shoot a handgun out of [[spoiler:King George's]] hand a split second before he tried to murdered Ruby in cold blood [[spoiler:after framing her and tricking her into believing that she killed Billy]]. All this with nothing but ''a crossbow''.
* KnightInSourArmour: Of the cynical second variety since she is not the most positive person but she can be violently protective of those she loves.
* MamaBear: Do ''not'' mess with her granddaughter. When [[spoiler:King George framed Ruby for murder and then]] tried to shoot her, Granny shoots the gun out of his hand and threatens to put the next one between his eyes.
* MassiveNumberedSiblings[=/=]OutnumberedSibling: In "Red-Handed", she mentioned that she had six brothers killed by the wolf, which could be a reference to ''The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids''.
* MeaningfulName:
** The surname "Lucas" was derived from the Greek word "lykos", which means "wolf".
** The word "lycanthropy", the clinical term for the mental disorder where one believes they can or have turned into an animal, is also derived from ''lykos'' meaning "wolf" and ''anthropos'' meaning "being human".
* NeverMessWithGranny: Especially not Enchanted World Granny.
* TheNoseKnows: Even though she can no longer turn into a wolf, she still has a sharp sense of smell.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: And apparently ends when a woman reaches menopause.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Red and implied to be one to Snow.
* PoorCommunicationKills: If Red's Grandma had told her about her werewolf nature, she and Snow never would have suspected Peter and he never would have been killed. To say nothing of all the other men who got ripped apart.
* ProperlyParanoid: About Werewolves. The amount of bolts and locks she's installed to defend her cottage ought to be an indication, as should the fact she spends all night with her crossbow trained on the door.
* RetiredMonster: A literal example since she can no longer turn into a wolf due to age, but still not someone to mess with.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: While she can no longer become a wolf she still has the tracking ability of one like Ruby does.
* ScarsAreForever: Granny has some due to her encounter with the Big Bad Wolf as a young girl.
* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: She's ''usually'' polite, but make no mistake, she has ''no'' qualms about deploying her signature rapier wit.
* WeaponOfChoice: She's usually seen with a crossbow, even after the curse is broken.
-->'''Red:''' Granny, do you really need that?\\
'''Granny:''' We've got a lawless town, Ruby, damn right I need it.
* WrenchWench: In "Child of the Moon", Granny shows herself to be handy with a welding torch.

[[caption-width-right:350:'''The Blue Fairy:''' ''"I hear your wish."'']]
[[caption-width-right:350:'''Mother Superior:''' ''"If I were you, your Majesty, I'd find a place to hide."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Keegan Connor Tracy

The old and powerful ruler of the fairies. In Storybrooke, she's the mother superior in the convent.
----
* AbsoluteCleavage: Even more so than the Evil Queen. ''The Evil Queen''. (Not so much in Storybrooke, what with her being, you know, a ''nun'' and all.)
* AGodAmI: Possibly a side effect of being the only authority figure of the fairies; believes she knows what is best, and does not take kindly to other fairies questioning her decisions, even when she may be wrong; she also has the power to [[spoiler: take away a fairy's magic and turn them human, just ask Tinker Bell]].
* BackFromTheDead: The death of [[spoiler:Peter Pan's Shadow brought her back to life.]]
* BigGood: She may have done some less-than-stellar things, but she still remains the most powerful force of good, always willing to help the heroes.
* BitchInSheepsClothing[=/=]GoodIsNotNice: While she does go around helping those in need, she can also be extremely judgmental and cruel to those she feels are undeserving of her help especically if you're a dwarf ''and'' she catches you dating one of her fairy minions. Made more explicit in "Quite a Common Fairy" where she refuses to help Regina because her mother was Cora and Rumpelstiltskin was tutoring her in magic, and when Tinker Bell tries to prove her wrong with some stolen pixie dust, [[spoiler: she takes her magic and wings and turns her into a human for betraying her trust.]]
* ControlFreak: Pretty much the cause of most of her other flaws.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Another victim of [[spoiler:Peter Pan's shadow ripping]], with the extra insult that it was completely at random and anyone would have done for [[spoiler:Pan's scheme. She gets better, though.]]
* FairyGodmother: She’s this for Pinocchio.
* TheFairFolk: Of the "trickster with questionable morality" type. Some of the things she does that end up inconveniencing others borders on {{Troll}} territory.
* FairySexy: Well her outfit tends to emphasize her chest, which leads to her FanNickname.
* FanNickname: The posters in TelevisionWithoutPity have taken to call her "The Boob Fairy".
* TheHighQueen[=/=]GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: For the fairies, she has an absolute and irrefutable control over them. If you are a good fairy, then all is well. If you are not so ideal, then you can expect some nastier side of her to show up.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She will help anyone in following their beliefs and dreams ''except'' if they have too much darkness in them, even if they may really need the help. As shown by her refusing to help Rumpel find Baelfire, or offer any help to Regina as revealed in "Quite a Common Fairy." Tinker Bell calls her out for the latter.
* LadyOfWar: She led her fairies into battle to help Snow and Charming.
* MeaningfulName: The Blue Fairy is also referred to as "Reul Ghorm", which is Scots Gaelic for "blue star".
* MostCommonSuperPower: Once again, see her nickname "The Boob Fairy".
* NunTooHoly: Mildly. The only activity she engages in that is not expected of a nun is going out for celebratory drinks with David Nolan and the seven dwarves after [[spoiler:finally finding diamonds in Storybrooke's mines to grind into fairy dust]]. Other than that, she is a perfect example of what a nun should be. It's even funnier considering she is the freaking ''Mother Superior''.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She looks the same now as she did decades ago when Geppetto was a little boy and even centuries before that when Rumpelstiltskin's son Baelfire asked for help saving his father. And she's implied to be ancient even then.
* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:Her shadow/soul got ripped off by The Shadow]], but when it was killed then hers was returned, and she was revived.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Of a mostly benevolent, borderline HolierThanThou type.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Fairies are supposed to help people, but the Blue Fairy refuses to offer any help to Regina, because she was Cora's child and because she sees evil in her. When Tinker Bell calls her out on that, she replies that ''she'' is the one who decides what is proper fairy behavior.
** She later says she was overly harsh, though, and apologizes to Tink for what she did to her.
* TookALevelInJerkass: "Dreamy" and "Quite a Common Fairy" reveals she's not as nice as she wants people to think.
** TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:After being restored back to life, she is genuinely grateful, and shows her gratitude by finally giving Tink her wings back. She also gives them the wand they need in order to defeat Pan.]]
* TrueBlueFemininity: Very feminine, tries to be fair and gentle, and is best known by her title of "The Blue Fairy".
* WellIntentionedExtremist: If she does anything that could be seen as wrong, she believes it's for "the greater good."

[[caption-width-right:350:'''Dr. Whale:''' ''"You're not my prince."'']]
->'''Played By:''' David Anders
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "In the Name of the Brother"

A misguided scientist from a different land, whose manipulation of Regina results in him being cursed like those in the Enchanted Forest. In Storybrooke, he works in the hospital as Dr. Whale.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Ruby, though his abhorrence is related to his personality rather than his looks. Though his abhorrence seems to be relaxing a bit after his backstory episodes and his regained memories, so time will tell if he'll be less of a lech in future episodes.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: He wants to stop death, protect his beloved brother and save lives...he also [[spoiler:robs graves, manipulates Regina, is willing to let a man die with nary a thought, and merely looks on, coldly, as his father is beaten to death]].
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:When he brings Daniel back and he CameBackWrong, Daniel ripped an arm off. He goes to Rumpel to get it repaired]].
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:It's implied that his brother CameBackWrong and Dr. Whale wants to make up for things by bringing him back to life the right way this time around. It's later confirmed in "In the Name of the Brother"]].
* CasanovaWannabe: Despite his Casanova-like tendencies, he doesn't seem to be very popular with anyone, much less the ladies themselves.
* CreatingLife: His stated goal as Doctor Frankenstein.
* CynicismCatalyst: He originally started out as an idealistic scientist who wanted to find a way to bring the dead back to life. After his little brother was killed, he ended up doing some morally ambiguous things that culminated in bringing said brother back to life as the creature from ''Literature/{{Frankenstein}}''.
* {{Determinator}}: He's a bit too obsessed with [[spoiler:bringing his brother back to life]].
* DrivenToSuicide: In "In the Name of the Brother". [[spoiler:He is stopped by Ruby]].
* ForScience: As Dr. Frankenstein, he seems to want to bring back the dead partly to prove that he, and by extension science, can.
* FreudianExcuse: His desire to bring the dead back to life stems from wanting to bring back his late mother (and later his little brother) because his father was never the same after she died.
* HandsomeLech: Big time. In fact, this is the [[EstablishingCharacterMoment first thing we found out about him]] in his introductory episode. And when the curse is broken, he only has this to say amidst all the chaos of everyone trying to readjust to their old memories.
-->'''Whale:''' Hey lemme ask you something. Are the nuns still nuns, or can they y'know... date? ''[offhandedly]'' Don't say it's me asking.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: While he's [[DrivenToSuicide contemplating suicide]], he admits to Ruby this is the reason he's been showing up to work drunk since regaining his memories. The name ''Frankenstein'' has becoming synonymous for a MadScientist and a creator of monsters, when he always wanted it to be remembered for someone who ''saved'' lives.
* HospitalHottie: A gender flipped example as the handsome doctor Whale.
* HotScientist: The natural result of making the HandsomeLech [[spoiler: Doctor Frankenstein]].
* {{Jerkass}}: Not the nicest person most of the time, in addition to being selfish and rude to others even when he's in the middle of a date with them.
* JerkassFacade[=/=]JerkWithAHeartOfGold: [[spoiler:His second focus episode shows he's a bit of a combination of these.]]
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: He'll go to great lengths to be reunited with his brother, even bringing said brother back from the dead.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: He wears one as a doctor in Storybrooke, [[spoiler:in the Enchanted Forest, and in his own world as Dr. Frankenstein]].
* MadScientist: Doctor Whale is Doctor Frankenstein after all.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: [[spoiler:Whale manages to walk around with his arm ''ripped off'' with nothing worse than a few winces]].
* MeaningfulName: His last name in Storybrooke [[spoiler:is the same name as director James Whale, who directed ''Film/{{Frankenstein 1931}}'' and its sequel, ''Film/BrideOfFrankenstein''. Doubles as {{Foreshadowing}}.]]
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: He is a lecherous {{Jerkass}} as Dr. Whale, [[spoiler: brings people back as mindless monsters (unintentionally) as Dr. Frankenstein, and he didn't even bother trying to stop his brother from killing their father back in his own land]].
* MysteriousPast: Prince Charming doesn’t even know who he was back in the Enchanted Forest. [[spoiler:That's because he's not from the Enchanted Forest at all]].
* NotSoDifferent: When he's feeling alone and stressed enough to [[spoiler:try to kill himself]], Ruby stops him. She then tells him that the two of them are damaged people who have lost loved ones, so they aren't that different from each other, but Ruby is okay with that because they have a second chance now. As Dr. Whale says later, they're both monsters. (Note that this is taken lightly, not as a slight against either of them.)
* {{Pride}}: He believes [[spoiler:[[ScienceVersusMagic science trumps magic]]. When his arm was ripped off, Rumpel told him the price to pay was admitting he is wrong]].
* SharpDressedMan: It is clear the guy tries to keep himself looking nice.
* SkewedPriorities: After the curse is broken and the wraith attack has left Storybrooke in turmoil, his only concern is to wonder whether he can date any of the fairies turned into nuns by the Curse?
* SuperDoc: Every time a character goes to the hospital he's the one who treats them, whether they need a GP, surgeon, or pediatrician.
* TheUnfavorite: His father clearly prefers his little brother over Victor.
* WellDoneSonGuy: His father never really respected his scientific achievements and made it quite clear Victor was the family's UnFavorite.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He wants to stop death.
* WrongGuyFirst: In Storybrooke, he goes on a terrible first date with Mary Margaret before she develops {{UST}} with David.

[[caption-width-right:350:'''The Genie of Agrabah/The Magic Mirror:''' ''"Making a wish comes with a price."'']]
[[caption-width-right:350:'''Sidney Glass:''' ''"I can grant your wish."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Creator/GiancarloEsposito
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree"

The Genie of Agrabah who falls in love with the Evil Queen. He later becomes the Magic Mirror, and in Storybrooke, he is a newspaper editor named Sidney Glass.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: The Genie was a good guy in the original story. Here, he starts out as this, but is blinded by his love for Regina [[spoiler:and commits murder for her]].
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: In love with Regina and completely devoted to her even though he knows the feeling is not mutual.
* ApologeticAttacker: Apologizes to [[spoiler:King Leopold when he kills him]].
* BadassBeard: Not as Sidney Glass, though.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: As The Genie, he used his last wish to make it so that he would "[[ExactWords never leave the Queen's side and always be able to look upon her face]]". Getting trapped in a Magic Mirror wasn't exactly what he intended, however.
* ButtMonkey: Mostly serves as one because of Regina in both worlds.
* BrutalHonesty: In his mirror form.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: A very borderline case, but one nonetheless.
* CompositeCharacter: He is both The Genie from Disney/{{Aladdin}} and The Magic Mirror from Literature/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs
* DeadpanSnarker: He is rather prone to snarking off as Sidney Glass.
* DramaticDeadpan: How the Genie introduces himself.
* {{Fallguy}}: Takes the rap for [[spoiler:Kathryn's kidnapping, despite it being a patently obvious attempt by by Regina to frame Mary Margaret for murder]].
* {{Guyliner}}: As the Genie.
* HiredToHuntYourself: The Genie was asked by King Leopold to identify Regina's lover.
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: He's lovingly devoted to Regina, who sees him as a pawn.
* JackassGenie: While it's the magic that's malicious, he's still personally a jerkass in either world.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: As the genie, he [[spoiler:killed Snow White's father]] to earn the affections of the Queen. As Sidney Glass, he lets himself be manipulated by Regina and [[spoiler: takes the fall for framing Mary Margaret]] because of his unrequited love for her.
* LoveMakesYouStupid: When King Leopold granted him the last wish from his own lamp, he said that he would never use it, because it always backfires. [[spoiler:He used it anyway because he loved Regina, and got trapped in a mirror as a result]].
* LoveMartyr: To Regina.
* MagicalNegro: For Regina. Unlike most examples, his selfless devotion to Regina is not presented positively. Instead, it's portrayed as an unhealthy obsession that allows Regina to manipulate him into [[spoiler:killing the man who freed him, getting trapped in a mirror, falsely confessing to a kidnapping, and ending up in a mental hospital]]. He remains in love with her even though she makes it clear that she does not care about him.
* MagicMirror: The TropeNamer from the enchanted forest.
* TheMole: Doubly subverted. First he acted as a mole for Emma against Regina, [[spoiler:but then it turns out he was a mole for Regina against Emma]].
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: Always does what Regina tells him, even if he knows what he's doing is immoral or harmful to him.
* OurGeniesAreDifferent: And apparently they can be sealed into Mirrors and just as prone to their [[LiteralGenie magic backfiring]] on them as the people they grant wishes for.
* PutOnABus: Sidney is [[spoiler:conveniently locked away in Regina's private asylum where he apparently remains even after the curse is broken]] due to the fact that his actor committed to co-starring in another series, ''Series/{{Revolution}}''.
** TheBusCameBack: For the mirror at least. Only time will tell how and if Sidney returns in Storybrooke.
* TokenMinority: One of the very few people of color in Storybrooke.
* UnwittingPawn: As the Genie to Regina.
* YesMan: In Storybrooke.

[[caption-width-right:350:'''Albert Spencer:''' ''"You should have killed me when you got the chance."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Alan Dale

The adoptive father of the twins James and David, who hopes to save his kingdom from ruin by marrying his son off to the daughter of King Midas. In Storybrooke, he is Albert Spencer, Storybrooke's district attorney.
----

* AristocratsAreEvil: Most of his villainy is based on politics and he is known as "King Charmless" for a reason.
* BaldOfEvil: And he most certainly is evil.
* BatmanGambit: He [[spoiler:stole Ruby's cloak that keeps her human during the full moon and murders Billy[=/=]Gus and frames Ruby]]. The most obvious reason was to discredit David's position of power, but his true reason is [[spoiler:to have David so distracted by trying to save Ruby, it gives him ample opportunity to find Jefferson's magic portal hat and burn it]]. It works. Also counts as a XanatosGambit since [[spoiler:if the first part had worked, David would have been discredited which would leave him capable of stepping into the power vacuum]].
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Played with. King George clearly doesn't really see the point in good, believing more in the privilege and power that being a royal has. However, he understands how love works, as he could recognize some sensible courses of action should things not go his way dealing with Snow and Charming.
* EvilIsPetty: His actions in "Child of the Moon" are all because of a petty grudge on Charming.
* EvilOldFolks: And he is pretty active about his villainy despite his age.
* FantasticRacism: Doesn't think highly of talking animals or werewolves.
* GoodParents: Played with. While he obviously [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes loved James]], he didn't do a terribly good job of raising him. The result is a greedy, selfish man who'll betray people (even his own lover Jack) at the drop of a hat - not that George would have a problem with that, but he's also so arrogant and convinced of his own superiority that he gets himself killed.
* IcyBlueEyes: He is cold to everyone, even his adoptive son(s).
* ImpoverishedPatrician: The kingdom's flat broke, which is why he needs the alliance with Midas, no matter who or what gets destroyed in the process.
* ItsAllAboutMe: In Season 2, he's far more concerned about proving that he's the one who should rule the kingdom rather than his subjects.
* {{Jerkass}}: As the King in the enchanted forest who hunted down Snow and Charming and continuing his vendetta in Storybrooke.
* KarmaHoudini: Even though he has killed to try and make Charming suffer, he never seems to get the punishment he deserves.
* KnightTemplar: He believes what he believes is right and anyone who opposes him is wrong and must be destroyed.
* LoveIsAWeakness: King George tells Snow White that love is a disease and Charming's love for her will ruin his marriage and the kingdom unless she convinces Charming that she doesn't love him.
* ManipulativeBastard: Well he was able to frame an innocent for murder pretty convincingly, and then took the opportunity it made to destroy Jefferson's hat.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: David assumed because he beat him back in the Enchanted Forest, he can be beaten easily again. How wrong he was.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: His response to Charming trying to back out of marrying Abigail.
* PrinceCharmless: King Charmless. It's even his FanNickname!
* PrincessInRags: In Storybrooke, since he has no kingdom there.
* {{Revenge}}: His main motivation against Charming.
** RevengeByProxy: And when he couldn't get direct revenge, he [[spoiler:destroyed the Mad Hatter's hat, the only known way to get Emma and Snow back to Storybrooke]]. His other actions in "Child Of The Moon" are also technically this, since he's trying to turn the town against Charming by [[spoiler:framing Ruby for murder and trying to kill her]].
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He is seen leading the charge when [[spoiler:Shepard runs off to find Snow White]].
* StartOfDarkness: According to himself, his whole LoveIsAWeakness shtick started when he married his wife but was unable to have sons, which turned their marriage into a loveless Hell for both of them.
* TheSociopath: Aside from his (original) son and maybe his wife, he believes in the "love is weakness" philosophy, and boy does he stick to it.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: At first, everything he does is to protect his kingdom, even if it means lying, murder, blackmail or [[DealWithTheDevil bargaining with Rumps]]. After a while he veered into self-centered KnightTemplar territory and presnelty he's diving close to pure ManipulativeBastard status since he [[spoiler:killed an innocent man in cold blood so that he could frame Ruby for murder and use David's belief in her to try to usurp his power and influence with the townspeople, all in the name of revenge]].
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In "Child of the Moon", Spencer [[spoiler:is exposed as Billy's murderer and destroys Jefferson's hat]]. Then he disappears for several episodes.

->'''Played By:''' Anastasia Griffith

The daughter of King Midas, who is being forced to marry Prince Charming. In Storybrooke, she is Kathryn Nolan, the wife of David.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: She was engaged to Charming before he met Snow.
* TheAtoner: In Storybrooke, she is trying really hard to be as loving as possible towards David in order to make up for their supposed argument that led to him leaving and getting into an accident that put him in a coma for years.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Kathryn Nolan is absent in Season 2 as her actress is now starring in ''Series/{{Copper}}''. However WordOfGod stated [[spoiler: [[http://www.tvguide.com/News/Once-Upon-Time-Spoilers-Kitsis-Horowitz-ABC-1060428.aspx she and Jim have reunited after the curse was broken and are living together in her house]]]].
* DaddysGirl: Abigail to King Midas.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has moments of this as Abigail.
* HiddenDepths: Abigail is introduced as a vapid, spoiled brat, [[spoiler:but she actually has her own secret army and is more than willing to help Charming find Snow White since she doesn't want to marry him either]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler:Eventually towards David and Mary Margaret]].
* JerkassFacade: As Abigail.
* JustFriends: With Prince Charming after they parted ways.
* MomentKiller: She really knows how to show up at the most awkward times possible whenever Mary Margaret and David are sharing a moment.
* NeverFoundTheBody: [[spoiler:Averted, in that her body was found. Alive]].
* NiceGirl: Noted by Mary Margaret.
* RoyalBrat: Our initial introduction to her in the Enchanted Forest suggests she's this, but later events change the impression: [[spoiler: she acts cold because she's no more interested in her ArrangedMarriage with Charming than he is, and for the same reason - her True Love is someone else. She acts like a brat in hopes that Charming would get sick of her and call off the marriage, until she learns that this is uncalled for]].
* SpoiledBrat: As would be expected of King freaking Midas' daughter. [[spoiler: Turns out to actually be SpoiledSweet.]]

[[caption-width-right:350:'''Jefferson:''' ''"Perhaps you're the one that's mad."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Sebastian Stan
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Hat Trick"

A man able to jump from different worlds through the aid of his hat. He became trapped in Wonderland and was known as the Mad Hatter until the Dark Curse brought him to Storybrooke, where he lives as a rarely-seen recluse.
----

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: One of the better examples on the show: In keeping with the show's treatment of other fairytale characters, the Mad Hatter is not a strange-looking older man with mad scientist hair, but an extremely handsome young man.
* AntiVillain: He's pushed into what he does by Regina's manipulation and betrayal plus love of his daughter. Also he's been driven more than a bit crazy by his time in Wonderland and being one of the few conscious people in Storybrooke. Though it is subverted after his first appearance in chronological order when [[spoiler: he helped manipulate Regina for his own greedy motives, and was blissfully unrepentant, unlike Victor Frankenstein, who sounded a bit shaken after his participation]].
* BlessedWithSuck: He remembers the Enchanted Forest while few others can... and is tormented by the fact that his daughter is living happily with a different family and has no memory of him. On top of that, he finally has everything he wanted to give Grace but it is impossible to share it with her.
* DeliverUsFromEvil: Jefferson gave up being a realm jumper after he had Grace. The difference in his character before and after becoming a father is especially prominent when we see that he was a weapons-grade {{Jerkass}} during his traveling days in "The Doctor", very unlike the man we were first (episodically, if not chronologically) introduced to in "Hat Trick".
* DestinationDefenestration: [[spoiler:Mary Margaret pushes him out a window in order to escape]].
* DimensionalTraveler: Via his magic hat.
* DisappearedDad: [[spoiler:He told Grace he would only leave her with the neighbours for a day, but ends up trapped in Wonderland]].
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a gruesome one around his neck from his decapitation in Wonderland. He hides it with a scarf in Storybrooke.
* HellBentForLeather: Jefferson wore a black leather coat before he stopped his portal jumping work for Rumpelstiltskin.
* HeroicBSOD: When he's stuck in Wonderland.
* KickTheDog: Now matter how much help he gives to Regina, she always kicks him when things get rough, leading to ...
** TheDogBitesBack: [[spoiler:Him freeing Belle and sending her to Rumpel with the information Regina was holding her prisoner]].
** [[spoiler:His prior treatment of Regina falls neatly in this category]]. It's like a circle of dog kicking.
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler: Regina's treatment of him may be KickTheDog behavior, but after seeing his role in her [[BreakTheCutie breaking]] and [[CorruptTheCutie corrupting]] it's also rather karmic]].
* LosingYourHead: It was hacked off in Wonderland but was reattached when the Queen of Hearts ordered him to recreate [[PortalNetwork his multidimensional hat]].
* LotusEaterMachine: Willing to put himself in one if his deal with Regina pays off: [[spoiler:he gives her the power to defeat Emma, and she rewrites Storybrooke so that he and Grace are together, but neither of them remember the Enchanted Forest]].
* MadeOfIron: He took the blunt force of a telescope to his head and still managed to chase after Emma, as well as [[spoiler:falling out of a two story window and fleeing from the scene of impact]].
* MadnessMantra: "Get it to work, get it to work, get it to work, get it to work..."
* MeaningfulName: Jefferson's name is a reference to the band Jefferson Airplane, which had a hit song called "White Rabbit", itself a reference to ''Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland''.
* NiceHat: He has one that allows for travel between different dimensions, including the Enchanted Forest and Wonderland. [[spoiler:Regina steals it after trapping him in Wonderland forcing him to try and make a new one]].
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: His proximity while he converses with Emma and Regina seem too close to be necessary.
* TheOphelia: [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender-Flipped]].
* PapaWolf: He loves Grace more than anything.
* PortalNetwork: Jefferson’s Magic Hat contains one of these, full of [[PortalDoor doors]] to various universes.
* PutOnABus: After he's reunited with Grace, he hasn't been seen since. This is because Sebastian Stan was commited to both a Broadway play and ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: How he acted toward Emma and Grace/Paige when he spied on them through his telescopes.
* TallDarkAndHandsome [[TallDarkAndSnarky and Snarky]]
* TookALevelInKindness: At some point between the Enchanted Forest events in "The Doctor" and "Hat Trick", he loses much of his ruthlessness that he shown when [[spoiler: he was willing to help Rumpelstiltskin corrupt Regina]]. This is because he found a woman to love and [[DeliverUsFromEvil have a child with]]...and when his evil "line of work" caused him to lose said woman, he quit it for good and focused only on being a good man and good father for his daughter.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: He fakes a limp after Emma ran over him with her car, to take her to his house.

->'''Played By:''' Lee Arenberg
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Dreamy"

An ill-tempered dwarf who allies himself with Snow White. In Storybrooke, he's a gruff handyman named Leroy.
----

* TheAlcoholic: In both universes.
* BatmanGambit: Need to sell candles? [[spoiler:Just cut the power to the festival leaving candles the only option and have plenty in stock]].
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: Grumpy does this to Nova after being convinced by the Blue Fairy that they should not be together.
* BrokenBird: His name starts out Dreamy but [[spoiler:he falls in [[StarCrossedLovers love with the fairy Nova]] and breaks it off because his boss Bossy and her boss The Blue Fairy claim it will never work and both will be miserable, he breaks his axe bearing the name "Dreamy" on it and]] becomes Grumpy.
* {{Catchphrase}}: Calls all women "sister."
* DeadpanSnarker: Shades of this in his bluntness.
* {{Determinator}}:
** Breaking out of jail, selling a ton of candles, going door to door to every house in Storybrooke, trying to deal with Gold, [[spoiler:cutting power to a whole festival]]. He may be a grouch and hitting the sauce, but in a pinch, he's your guy.
** In Season 2, he spearheads the campaign to [[spoiler: mine for fairy dust and cultivate magic beans to allow them to one day possibly return home to the Enchanted Forest]], even knowing the odds are ''highly'' against them succeeding.
* FantasticCasteSystem: Forced to work in the mine, forbidden to ever leave it and never allowed to fall in love. When he asks ''why'' he can't do something else, he's told that it's because he's a Dwarf; Mining is all they're ''supposed'' to do!
* GrayEyes: Fitting his cynical personality.
* GrumpyBear: Unsurprisingly he is grumpy a lot.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: He wanted Nova to stay with the other fairies since he thought it was what was best for her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: When he's not an outright dreamer type that makes impossible promises, he comes across a gruff guy who calls everyone "sister." But he does really care for those he loves, like his brothers and Snow White.

** MeaningfulRename: His heartbreak caused his positive daydreaming "Dreamy" persona to become the cynical grouch "Grumpy".
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: If given the chance to forget his pain he would refuse as his pain defines him. It helps make him "Grumpy".
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Is aghast that [[spoiler:he caused Sneezy to lose his Fairy Tale memories. Again]]. He's determined to set things right.
* NotSoDifferent: Snow and Grumpy bond over their "lost" loves.
* NumberTwo: Often shares this role with Red, towards Snow and Charming.
* TheReliableOne: Shaping into this in Season 2, where he takes the initiative to find out what happens when they cross the town line and spearheads the campaign to [[spoiler: mine for fairy-dust and cultivate magic beans]].
* StarCrossedLovers: As Dreamy with Nova the fairy.
* ThatManIsDead: Once he gives up love in the fairy tale universe, his true name becomes Grumpy, and he declares that he's no longer Dreamy.
* UglyGuyHotWife: With Nova. [[spoiler: According to Season Two extras...they break up.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To Snow White and Charming.

* IllBoy: Given how often he sneezes.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: He forgets his memories of his fairy tale self after crossing the Storybrooke border.
* MeaningfulName: Not sure if he has a medical reason for it but he sneezes fairly often.
* SacrificialLamb: A non-lethal version. Sneezy was chosen to be the one to cross the border of Storybrooke to see what would exactly happen to those that do.

[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Cora_2609.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:'''Cora:''' ''"Love is weakness."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Barbara Hershey, Creator/RoseMcGowan (younger Cora)
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Queen of Hearts", "The Miller's Daughter"

The daughter of a miller and the highly manipulative mother of Regina.
----
* AbusiveParents: Cora abused Regina physically and emotionally, tried to make her a GoldDigger, and finally ripped out the heart of the man Regina loved and crushed it into dust, killing him. [[spoiler:It is revealed that the major cause of this was that she had ripped out her own heart, which made her unable to feel real love for anyone]].
* AlasPoorVillain: Her death scene is very emotional. [[spoiler:She finally has her heart back, and realizes that her love for Regina would have been enough for her the whole time, completely abandoning her "love is weakness" mentality. She then dies in Regina's arms, saying "This would have been enough...YOU would have been enough"]].
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Cora is a tall dark haired woman with a frosty demeanour, much like her daughter.
* AmbitionIsEvil: Cora is determined to break away from her past as the miller's daughter and there is absolutely no one that she wouldn't sleep with, cut deals with, manipulate, abuse, or kill to get what ''she'' wants.
* AndShowItToYou: To Daniel right before crushing it and killing him. In front of Regina.
* ArcVillain / BigBad: For a majority of Season 2, as she is still alive in the Enchanted Forest and [[spoiler:scheming to find a way to Storybrooke and exact her revenge on Regina for pushing her through the mirror]]. Snow mentions that no matter how badly Regina has acted, Cora is ''worse'', and Cora spends episode after episode proving Snow correct on this.
* AscendedExtra: An absolutely terrifying version.
* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler:Her entire plan revolves around Regina saving Snow White]].
* BeatStillMyHeart: Cora did this to Daniel in front of Regina.
* BreakTheHaughty: Cora was always bitter, haughty, and had a nasty streak a mile wide. But a childish prank by some royals humiliates her, and this becomes her entire reason to '''exist''' - to make everyone ''else'' (especially anyone of royal blood) get down on their knees before ''her.''
* TheChessmaster: Her plan that involved [[spoiler:killing Snow's mother]]and manipulating events so that Regina would save the young girl's life in order to get King Leopold to propose to her is definitely the work of one of these. But then there's the fact that she deceived and manipulated Rumplestiltskin TWICE. On top of that, she got Hook to go after Rumple in "The Outsider" with the implication that she knew Hook would not be able to find a way to kill him, instead seeking to break him so that she could play him later on. And then finally, it's implied in "The Queen is Dead" that Regina going on a vendetta against poor Snow was part of her plan to "turn Snow White's heart black as coal" and destroy Eva's legacy; Regina's entire RoaringRampageofRevenge has been within the cards that Cora played this entire time.
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Rumpelstiltskin may have taught her to rip out hearts, but she made it an ''art form'' with her oh so warm and welcoming vault of still beating hearts.
* CompositeCharacter: Cora is both the miller's daughter (from the original ''Literature/{{Rumpelstiltskin}}'' fairy tale) [[spoiler:and the Queen of Hearts from ''Literature/AliceInWonderland''. She also has shades of Koschei the Deathless, given that she's removed her own heart and hidden it for safe-keeping]].
* ConsummateLiar: Unsurprising, given she's the one Regina inherited it from. [[spoiler:She fools ''everyone'' in the settlement into thinking she was powerless and replacing Lancelot without Mulan or Snow (who knew Lancelot) realizing until she slipped by mentioning Henry]].
* TheCorrupter: She basically ruins Regina's HeelFaceTurn with a few words.
* CorruptTheCutie: At the funeral of Queen Eva, Snow's mother, she tells her [[spoiler:her plan is to make Snow's good heart black and evil]].
** She also starts the work on Regina. Rumpelstiltskin provides the rest.
* CrazyPrepared: [[spoiler:As Queen of Hearts, she doesn't keep her heart where everyone else does, making it impossible for Hook to rip it out]].
* DeadPersonImpersonation: Has been masquerading as [[spoiler:Lancelot]] for quite some time.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: It's only as she's dying that she [[spoiler:shows true love for her daughter and regrets all the evil she's done]].
* DeathByIrony: At the funeral of Queen Eva, Snow White's mother, she tells the dead queen her plot [[spoiler:in corrupting Snow White as a final means of destroying Eva and her "goodness." She is finally killed because Snow crossed the line by tricking Regina into putting Cora's cursed heart back into her body. Snow even used the same Cursed Candle Cora gave her as a means of saving her mother]].
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:Regina held her after Regina put the cursed heart back in her. For those last moments, she finally realized just having Regina would have been enough for her]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: So, a flighty princess tripped you and humiliated you in front of a bunch of nobles. [[spoiler: It's [[SarcasmMode perfectly reasonable]] to kill her in a slow, painful way with evil magic a decade later]].
* TheDreaded: Finding out that Cora is [[spoiler:trying to find a way to Storybrooke]] is an OhCrap moment for Regina and Rumpelstiltskin.
* DyingAsYourself: Albeit [[spoiler:a "self" that she hadn't been for most of her life]].
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: As a young woman in "The Miller's Daughter".
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In "The Stable Boy", we are introduced to Regina riding a horse with her father complimenting on her skill. Then her mother shows up, derides her for [[TomboyPrincess riding her horse in a masculine form]], and uses magic to restrain her while she [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech insults various choices Regina made in her life]].
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** Regina. [[spoiler: At least in her last moments]].
** [[spoiler: Had a romance with Rumpelstiltskin and reveals that this was why she removed her heart]]
* EvilCounterpart: By Season 2, she is becoming this to [[spoiler:Regina, of all people. Large parts of the two characters' backstories are almost identical, but Regina recognises that she has done truly horrible things and appears to be sincerely trying to make amends. By contrast, Cora, if anything, is getting even ''more'' sociopathic. Of the major characters in the show, Cora was (before Peter Pan came along) the only one who could still be considered to be completely and unrepentantly evil until her last episode, "The Miller's Daughter", which manages to drum up some sympathy for her]].
* EvilMatriarch: She is the head of the family, despite marrying up to be with Henry, by using her powerful magic to make them all afraid.
* EvilOldFolks: As the mother of Regina, she is one of the oldest living characters in the series and very evil.
* FantasyForbiddingFather: She didn't approve of Regina horseback riding in an undignified manner and casually tortured her until Regina promised to be good.
* TheFashionista: Apparently, her first stop after [[spoiler: arriving in Storybrooke]] and ruining Regina's redemption arc was going to get her hair did and assembling a modern wardrobe. She also takes time out of her EvilGloating at [[spoiler: Queen Eva's funeral]] to sass [[spoiler: the Blue Fairy]]'s outfit.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Always speaks with a maternally put-upon tone that suggests a constant attitude of "really, dear, if you weren't so ''unreasonable'', [[WhyDidYouMakeMeHitYou I wouldn't have had to torture you]]."
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Cora wants this for Regina and will do whatever it takes to achieve it.
* ForTheEvulz: Her murder of [[spoiler:Johanna. She already had what she wanted, but she proceeded to throw Johanna to her death out of pure malice]].
* FromNobodyToNightmare: ''Twice''. [[spoiler:First, in the Enchanted Forest she rose from a poor miller's daughter to wealthy noblewoman and one of the deadliest sorceresses in the world. Then again in Wonderland, where she rose from having been banished there with nothing but the clothes on her back to becoming the ''Queen of Hearts'']].
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: [[spoiler:As the Queen of Hearts]].
* GoldDigger: Marries Henry Sr. purely for the power and wealth of his position. The night before the wedding, she even flat-out states to his father "I don't love your son."
* GoOutWithASmile: She remembers [[spoiler:how much she loved her daughter before she died]], resulting in this trope.
* GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: She's very well kept for a woman of her age.
* GreaterScopeVillain: For Regina's character in Season 1.
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: [[spoiler: So, you give a little girl a candle that could save one person by deliberately killing another so that you could corrupt her? Well, the corruption worked, but bet you never thought she'd grow up and kill ''you'' with it for all the hell you caused her!]]
* IceQueen: [[spoiler:Main reason is she lacked a heart]].
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** It's rather telling that Cora's immediate response to Regina claiming that she has no right to control her the way she does because it's "my life" is to retort "It's ''mine''." Not to mention how it took [[spoiler:twenty odd years in Wonderland ''plus'' the twenty-eight years before the curse was broken]] for it to occur to her to ask her daughter what ''she'' wants instead of deciding for her.
** As of "The Miller's Daughter," it seems that [[spoiler: most of this attitude comes from not having her heart, as she seems to genuinely feel love for Regina after it's restored]]. Of course...
* KilledOffForReal: Right after [[spoiler:getting her heart back. The heart that allows her to love her daughter right before it kills her. That was put into her by Regina. Who had been manipulated by a [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope broken]] Snow]]. ''Ouch''.
* KneelBeforeZod: She wants all the uppity nobles, especially one woman who played a prank on her, to kneel before her.
* KnightTemplarParent: She will do what she thinks is right for her daughter because she honestly believes Regina needs her.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Thanks to Rumpel teaching her how to channel those dark emotions.
* LoveIsAWeakness: Her motto. And it's a weakness she's more than willing to use or remove as she sees fit. Unfortunately, love is also ironically ''her'' weakness with regards to Regina. [[spoiler: And Rumpelstiltskin]].
* ManipulativeBitch: Oh, definitely. For emphasis, her daughter is no slouch at it herself, but falls prey to Cora's manipulations as easily as anyone else, even though she ''knows better''.
* MasterOfIllusion[=/=]VoluntaryShapeshifting: Shows a more fully realized version of Regina's ability to transform into an old crone in ''Hat Trick'' by [[spoiler:posing as Lancelot]]. And later [[spoiler:as Regina herself to frame her. And as Henry. And as the Blue Fairy]].
** It's gotten to a point where the MemeticMutation "[[ParanoiaFuel Everyone is Cora]]" has been born.
* MeaningfulName:
** The meaning of "Cora" in Greek is "The Maiden Of Hearts" which is fitting because she made a habit out of ripping a person's heart out, killing them.
** Furthermore, she is [[spoiler:The Queen of Hearts in ''Hat Trick'' after her daughter pushed her through a looking glass]]. The word ''corazon'' is Spanish for "heart."
** Rumpelstiltskin even lampshades the irony of her name, given her future ''[[AndShowItToYou modus operandi]]'';
--> '''Rumpelstiltskin''': Cora? It's not a very pretty name. Sounds like something ''breaking''.
* MerlinAndNimue: Much like her daughter after her, Cora served as Rumpelstiltskin's apprentice. Unlike Regina, Cora's tutelage involved tongue.
* MindOverMatter: Cora has a habit of using this with magic to bring things to her or toss people around.
* MyBelovedSmother: She will do anything that will, from her view, advance Regina's status to queen.
* {{Necromancer}}: Apparently, she wasn't scary enough already.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Cora is relatively immune to Hook's "pretty face".
** PeoplePuppets: If she doesn't kill them when she takes the heart, she can use them this way too.
* NeverMessWithGranny: ''Ever''. You ''will'' regret it if you do.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She looks about the same in the present as she did when Regina was a teenager.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler: She abandoned her first daughter Zelena.]]
* ParentalMarriageVeto: [[spoiler:Regina loved Daniel. She... disapproved]].
* PlayingWithFire: When she can't get close enough to Snow to rip out her heart, she improvises with fireballs.
* RagsToRiches: She was born a miller's daughter--confirmed to be [[Literature/{{Rumpelstiltskin}} THE miller's daughter]] in "We Are Both"--and became landed gentry through various [[DealWithTheDevil deals]]. She won't settle for anything less than her daughter going even further up the social ladder.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: She's usually seen dressed in a black and dark red dress.
* RichBitch: [[spoiler:Averted in her youth. As the Miller's daughter, she was poor as mud]].
* SocialClimber: Started out as a lowly miller's daughter who used charm, wiles, and treachery to get into the court's good graces and marry nobility. She will settle for Regina being nothing less than being queen after her.
* TheSociopath: Casually tortures her daughter to get her way, says that love is weakness, [[spoiler: kills the man said daughter loves]]...
* SoulJar: Apparently, being just ''figuratively'' heartless was too subtle...
* StageMom: Makes her daughter miserable because she'd rather Regina be queen than happy. Or, as she puts, being queen is the only way Regina will be happy (even if she disagrees on that point) because power is real and love is an illusion.
** She continues this trend as EvilMentor to the Red Queen in Wonderland, who is more receptive to it.
* StartOfDarkness: When she was a young woman, [[spoiler:she was tripped by an immature Princess Eva (Snow's mother before she wed Snow's father) and Eva claimed Cora hurt her. The King of the land forced Cora to apologize on her knees and wouldn't pay her for the flour]]. This was the start of her darkness as she would use the emotion she felt here to channel magic to spin straw into gold.
* StepfordSmiler: Type C.
* TwoAliasesOneCharacter: Presenting Her Majesty, [[spoiler:the Queen of Hearts]].
* TheUnfettered: No matter what deal she has to make, no matter whose life she has to end, Regina ''will'' marry up. Barbara Hershey, who also played a StageMom in the movie ''BlackSwan'', says that Cora would consider her ''Black Swan'' character "weak".
* UnholyMatrimony: [[spoiler: She was in a relationship with Rumpelstiltskin prior to her marriage to Henry]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Actually surprisingly averted, given this show's trend. Cora was already bitter, proud, vengeful and calculating before Rumpelstiltskin came into her life, although she was not yet evil by any stretch. The way she used her wits to her advantage and didn't hesitate to talk back to arrogant royalty is actually admirable.
* WhosLaughingNow: Embittered by her poor living circumstances and the way nobles treated her, Cora's greatest aspiration was to make them all bow to ''her''. '''Painfully'''.
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:Arranged for Snow's horse to go crazy in the first place, which could have ''killed'' her]].
* {{Yandere}}: If Cora ''does'' actually love Regina, it's a possessive and cruel love that doesn't allow for deviation from what ''she'' wants.

A stoic warrior unaffected by the Dark Curse. She helps Prince Phillip find Princess Aurora.
----

* AbortedDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:To Aurora.]]
* ActionGirl: Is a female warrior.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: There's hardly ever a moment where's she's not aloof and composed, a stark contrast to how she's portrayed in the Disney film.
** As of Season 3, this seems to have been toned down somewhat; she's dropped most of the old-fashioned honorifics from her diction and started using contractions. She actually even ''smiles'' now.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Towards Aurora.
* BackForTheFinale: Along with Phillip and Aurora, she finds [[spoiler:Neal washed up on a beach in the Enchanted Forest]].
* {{Badass}}: Taking on Regina's men single handedly and Cora with a ''sword''.
** BadassGay: Fell in love with Aurora.

* CoolSword: Carries a jian that can deflect magical attacks.

* GoodIsNotNice: She's not overly friendly but she's definitely one of the good guys.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: She has a helmet, but never wears it beyond the initial conceal-that-she's-a-woman scenes.
* HonorBeforeReason: To an extent. Her oath to protect Aurora means [[spoiler:she'll take only a few hours to decide to steal the compass and try to make a deal with Cora, despite knowing that Cora's... not nice and wants to go to another world to be not nice to many more people]].
* IGaveMyWord: She told Phillip that she would protect Aurora and she fully intends to keep that promise.
** BecomingTheMask: She started off protecting Aurora due to her unrequited feelings toward Phillip and no personal affection for Aurora. As the two girls grew to become friends, Mulan's feelings shifted completely from Phillip to Aurora.
* IncompatibleOrientation: She gets inspired to reveal her love for Aurora, just as Aurora announces she's pregnant.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy [[spoiler: Learns that Aurora is pregnant with Phillip's child before she could confess her feelings for Aurora. She expresses fake happiness at this then she tells Aurora that she would be joining the Merry Men [[AbortedDeclarationOfLove instead of her planned confession.]] After hugging each other farewell, Mulan leaves in tears. (Though Aurora's not exactly happy at this parting, either.)]]
* JustFriends: She claims she is just Phillip's friend, but Aurora doesn't quite buy it, and [[WordOfGod statements from the writers]] seem to confirm her suspicions.
** As of "Quite a Common Fairy," she ends up [[spoiler: having to accept this status for her and ''Aurora'' as well.]]
* LadyOfWar: Calm, stoic, and completely deadly in battle.
* TheLancer: To Phillip and Lancelot.
* NotSoStoic: After Aurora tells her [[spoiler:that she's pregnant with Phillip's child, right before Mulan can tell her that she's fallen in love with her. Mulan congratulates Aurora, but the second Mulan turns away she starts to cry.]]
* TheQuietOne: She doesn't talk a lot, contrasting with the more spirited Aurora.
* SamusIsAGirl: Her introduction, mirroring Charming's first meeting with Snow.
* TheStoic: In Season 2.
* SuddenlySexuality: See BiTheWay.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Aurora's Girly Girl.
* TokenMinority: One of the few characters of color on the show to have lines without being [[BlackDudeDiesFirst killed]].
** TwoferTokenMinority: She's bisexual or possibly homosexual.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Aurora, as protecting her was Phillip's last wish.
* YouGoGirl: Mulan refuses to be called "a girl" and prefers saying that she is a woman and a warrior to the surprised Aurora.

The true love of Prince Phillip who was placed under the Sleeping Curse by Maleficent.

* BackForTheFinale: Along with Phillip and Mulan, she finds [[spoiler:Neal washed up on a beach in the Enchanted Forest]].
* BadDreams[=/=]RecurringDreams: Since waking up from the Sleeping Curse, she's had recurring nightmares of being trapped in a room on fire. [[spoiler:As it turns out, Henry's been having them, too, and so has Mary Margaret - which ends up being key to getting Mary Margaret and Emma out of the Enchanted Forest]].
* BadLiar: Proclaims to be one.
* DeadpanSnarker: She deals with Cora with ''glorious disdain''.
* DeepSleep: Until Prince Phillip woke her up.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She was initially not very friendly towards Mulan, but eventually warmed up to her.
* DeliberateValuesDissonance: She had a mild moment where she was shocked that Prince Phillip's traveling companion who he had fought alongside through many battles was a girl.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: She's always wearing a purple dress.
* HeroicSuicide: Aurora is ready to sacrifice herself for others, since she doesn't believe she can be happy, but thinks they can and should. Snow White and Mulan don't let her go through it, but still.
* TheIngenue: A classic example of one.
* TheInsomniac: As a side effect of the sleeping curse and it's bad enough that Aurora gives up sleeping until Snow promises to help her through it.
* {{Irony}}: In the first episode of the second season, Aurora [[spoiler:accuses Mulan of having feelings for Phillip, which Mulan strongly denies. She goes on and says ''"Deny it all you want, I know love when I see it."'' to Mulan. The latter is revealed to be in love with her in Season 3 and Aurora is completely unaware of it.]]

* StrangerInAFamiliarLand: She was in DeepSleep when Regina cast the Curse, so she doesn't know anything about it.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She is sweet to Phillip, her LoveInterest, but cold and proud towards Mulan when she senses her interest towards him. Of course, [[DefrostingIceQueen this changes over time]] and she and Mulan become very close.

A mermaid from the undersea kingdom of Atlantica who can travel between realms.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: On her very first scene she saves Snow White's life and she has the ability to travel through dimensions.
* {{Adorkable}}: Her unfamiliarity with the human world causes plenty of it.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Regina takes a mini salad trident to the neck for abusing her trust.
* BreakTheCutie: Subverted big-time, as even after 28 years without a voice, Ariel is still [[PluckyGirl as spirited as ever.]]
* ChekhovsGun: The fork she keeps from the ball. She uses it to stab Regina in the neck as she was magically strangling Snow White. Ariel herself is an example due to her ability to travel between dimensions.
* ChekhovsGunman: Her existence was foreshadowed way back in "Skin Deep" when Regina told Rumpel she needed help dealing with a certain mermaid.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Thanks to being unused to walking on legs.
* FishOutOfWater: In both a literal and figurative sense. She is this whenever she spends time on land, whether it's in the Enchanted Forest or Storybrooke.
* FriendOrIdolDecision: Chooses to help Snow escape and enrage the Evil Queen rather than take the easy way out.

[[caption-width-right:346:'''Granny:''' ''"Welcome to Storybrooke."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Beverley Elliott

* MeaningfulName:

->'''Played By:''' Keegan Connor Tracy

----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Ruby, though his abhorrence is related to his personality rather than his looks.

* {{Guyliner}}: As the Genie.
* LoveMartyr: To Regina.
* YesMan: In Storybrooke.

->'''Played By:''' Alan Dale

->'''Played By:''' Anastasia Griffith

* JerkassFacade: As Abigail.

->'''Played By:''' Sebastian Stan
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Hat Trick"

* TheOphelia: [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender-Flipped]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome [[TallDarkAndSnarky and Snarky]]

->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Dreamy"

An ill-tempered dwarf who allies himself with Snow White. In Storybrooke, he's a gruff handyman named Leroy.
----

* TheAlcoholic: In both universes.
* {{Determinator}}:
* TheLeader: Definitely comes across as a Type III and unofficial leader of the seven dwarves.
* LoveHurts: After he chooses to give up on running off with Nova the fairy.
* MeaningfulName:Just like all names given by the dwarf's axes. He just happened to have it happen to him twice.
* WideEyedIdealist: As Dreamy.
* YouAreNotAlone: To Snow after she temporarily breaks up with Charming to save his life.

----

* ButtMonkey: Not a very lucky person, and [[spoiler: loses his memories as "Sneezy" since Grumpy pushed him over the boundary line in Storybrooke.]]

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
* ItsAllAboutMe:
* MeaningfulName:
** Rumpelstiltskin even lampshades the irony of her name, given her future ''[[AndShowItToYou modus operandi]]'';
* StepfordSmiler: Type C.

[[caption-width-right:350:'''Mulan:''' ''"Even if I don't believe in his methods, I am going to honor his wishes. I'm going to keep you safe."'']]
->'''Played By:''' Jamie Chung

A stoic warrior unaffected by the Dark Curse. She helps Prince Phillip find Princess Aurora.
----

* AbortedDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:To Aurora.]]
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Towards Aurora.
** HeartbrokenBadass: [[spoiler:In addition to being {{Badass}}, suffers from a case of IncompatibleOrientation.]]
* BiTheWay: As of "Quite a Common Fairy", turns out she's had feelings for both Phillip ''and'' Aurora (although Aurora's assumption that she had feelings for Philip was never confirmed).
* BodyguardCrush: [[spoiler:Revealed to be in love with Aurora who she swore to protect in Season 3]]
* CoolSword: Carries a jian that can deflect magical attacks.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Towards Aurora, see the quote above.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Her last scene (chronologically) in Season 2 has her finally smiling, and in Season 3, she's doing it much more often and acting less aloof and reserved, complete with letting her hair down.
* FakeNationality: Character from Chinese legend played by Korean-American Jamie Chung.
* TheStoic: In Season 2.
* SuddenlySexuality: See BiTheWay.

----

* LegacyCharacter: Her mother was the original Sleeping Beauty.
* NonActionSnarker: Hell yes. Despite being far weaker than [[spoiler:Cora]] it doesn't stop her from using her tongue to lash back.
* ObliviousToLove: From [[spoiler:Mulan.]]
* PeoplePuppets: [[spoiler:Briefly Cora's]].
* PluckyGirl: Lampshaded by Cora when she holds her captive.
* PrincessClassic: Beautiful, sweet, gentle, and a non-combatant.
* SilkHidingSteel: Sweet, demure, and brave enough to sass Cora when she was captured.
* TalkingInYourDreams: [[spoiler:As a side-effect of the Sleeping Curse, she has found the power to wander the dream realm for those like her, such as Henry]].
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Mulan's Tomboy.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Big and blue-green.

->'''Played By:''' [=JoAnna Garcia-Swisher=]
->'''Centric Episodes:''' "Ariel"

* LoveAtFirstSight: Typical for a fairy tale heroine. She falls for Prince Eric at first sight when she saves him from a shipwreck.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: And in this case, it's because...
** SirensAreMermaids: [[http://www.examiner.com/article/once-upon-a-time-season-3-lana-parrilla-talks-sirens-and-robin-hood According to Lana Parrilla]].
* PluckyGirl: As expected.
