There's already a Grand Theft Auto 3 characters
!! GrandTheftAutoIII Characters [[foldercontrol]] [[folder:The Protagonist]] !!Claude (VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIII) [[quoteright:238:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Claude-001_5988.png]] Our "hero" in the series's first 3D title - a very competent street thug betrayed by his girlfriend Catalina during a bank heist. Escaping police custody, he goes on an epic quest in Liberty City to make as much money as possible, destroy things, kill people, and take revenge at some point. * AmbiguousSituation: What happens as the credits roll. * AntiHero (Type V)/ VillainProtagonist * (Anti)-HeroicMime - The implication is that he genuinely lacks the ability to verbalize. ** This may or may not be {{Fanon}}, though, due to the only "evidence" being CJ accusing him of being a mute in GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas. If true, however, it may be an AscendedMeme. * {{Badass}} * BestServedCold: One interpretation of the game is that all of Claude's murders, mayhem, and madness was all to get at Catalina. * TheCameo - Has an appearance on a movie poster in Vice City, and in IV, Niko can don his leather jacket and green pants. In addition, graffiti with his name on it can be seen in an apartment building. * ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Claude's defining trait. Claude will turn on ''anyone'' as long as there's money to be made. ** JustifiedTrope in his long-time lover and confidant, Catalina, did the exact same thing to him. [[spoiler: Salvatore Leone does the same thing to him as well]] * TheDogBitesBack: Catalina is implied to use, abuse, and discard men like tissue paper. Claude is the first to get back at her. * DrivesLikeCrazy * HazyFeelTurn: Due to Claude's silence, we never actually get his opinions on any of his employer and whether or not he felt any loyalty to them whatsoever. * HellBentForLeather * ItsPersonal: It's subtle Claude's betrayals become much more pronounced and cold-blooded once Catalina (re)enters the picture. * TheMafia: Briefly becomes a member of it after a member invites him to join. [[spoiler: It ends when Salvatore comes to the conclusion Claude is sleeping with his wife.]] ** Later joins TheYakuza. * MeaningfulName - Claude is Latin for "lame". GTA III Claude is a mute. * MistakenForCheating: [[spoiler: Salvatore thinks Claude is sleeping with his wife. Mostly because Maria said they were.]] * MythologyGag - Compare to "Claude Speed" of the ''Grand Theft Auto 2'' [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-9NtgpNg4E intro movie]]. He's commonly thought to be the exact same character after a tongue-ectomy. * NoNameGiven - The name "Claude" was first found in [[AllThereInTheScript in-game files]], and later confirmed in ''San Andreas.'' * {{Revenge}}: An obvious motive for Claude. * RevengeBeforeReason: Claude's position with [[spoiler: Maria and Asuka]] is extremely nice but he endangers it to work for [[spoiler: Donald Love]]. An AlternateCharacterInterpretation would be it's a simple case of MoneyDearBoy. * SuperDrowningSkills - Handwaved by saying Liberty's water is essentially toxic. * VehicularSabotage: One of the ways Claude can dispose of his enemies. [[/folder]] [[folder: The Leone Crime Family]] !!Salvatore Leone [[quoteright:237:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Salvatore-001_2500.jpg]] * AffablyEvil: Despite its aggressive and vindictive personality, what he values most is loyalty. ** [[spoiler: Becomes an IronicDeath or KarmicDeath when he turns on Claude, who hadn't yet displayed any of his trademark ChronicBackstabbingDisorder.]] * AntiVillain: Somewhat. * AxCrazy: Sometimes. Many times because of his paranoia. * CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler:CJ doublecrossing him]] in ''San Andreas'' ends up turning him into the ultra-paranoid wacko he becomes in ''III''. * DiabolicalMastermind * [[spoiler: DiscOneFinalBoss: Is killed at the climax of first third of the game after Claude spends the entirety of it working for him.]] * TheDon * EvilVersusEvil: All the time. * [[spoiler: FaceHeelTurn: In GTAIII.]] * {{Expy}}: Of [[Film/TheGodfather Vito Corleone]]. * IdiotBall: Arguably, for marrying Marie in the first place as she cheats on him constantly but he blames her paramours for it. Also, she's a liar but he takes everything she says at face-value. * KnightTemplar: After falling arrested in 1998, he vows revenge eliminating all rival mafias. Although it could also have to trope in San Andreas, where he promises to kill CJ, his family and everyone close to him. ** Thankfully, he has no idea who CJ really is. * LaserGuidedKarma: Finally got what he deserved in GTA III. * MistakenForCheating: Has this motivation [[spoiler: for ordering a hit on Claude.]] * ProperlyParanoid - The only person he does not seems to distrust is Toni Cipriani, and he even holds him at gunpoint once. * [[TrashTalk Trash Talker]] - Quite often, especially with Maria in LCS and members of rival gangs. * VillainProtagonist: Only in GTA: Liberty City Stories. !!Maria Latore [[quoteright:111:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/111px-catalinaart_9454.jpg]] Salvatore Leone's much-suffering wife. Maria willfully cheats on him, uses drugs, and shows no interest in him. [[spoiler: Later becomes involved with Claude, where her feelings become more genuine.]] Becomes a supporting character in ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoLibertyCityStories Grand Theft Liberty City Stories]]'' Stories and has a cameo in GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas. * AllThereInTheScript - Her surname. * AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler: Her fate during the credits.]] * BiTheWay: Is carrying on a sexual relationship with Asuka. * TheCameo: Is a waitress in San Andreas. * {{Golddigger}}: Is only with Salvatore Leone because of his money. * LipstickLesbian: With Asuka. * TheLoad * MafiaPrincess - ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoLibertyCityStories LCS]]'' sees her in the middle of the life, and ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIII III]]'' sees her at the tail-end of it. * ManipulativeBastard: May have set up the situation so [[spoiler: Claude killed Don Salvatore]]. In which case, [[spoiler: Claude killing her at the end]] would be a [[spoiler: KarmicDeath]]. * MayDecemberRomance: Justified as her husband is a rich mafia don. * YourCheatingHeart !!Toni Cipriani (VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoLibertyCityStories) [[quoteright:227:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Toni-001_7969.png]] First appeared in ''GTAIII'' as a Capo for Liberty City's dominant Leone Mafia family. Later used as the protagonist of the prequel title ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoLibertyCityStories,'' where he has returned from a long absence to help organize said family's success. Has an unsupportive, domineering mother who embarrasses him at every turn. * AntiHero (Type V) * AxCrazy: More specifically in the mission "Dead Meat" (from GTA: Liberty City Stories) where he, indignant to be enduring Giovanni Casa, Toni proceeds to brutally dismember him with an ax, and finally ''carrying their leftover meat to his butchery!'' * {{Badass}} * BasementDweller * TheComicallySerious * HeyItsThatVoice: Michael "[[Film/ReservoirDogs Mr. Blonde]]" Madsen in ''III''. * KarmaHoudini * MommasBoy * RetiredBadass: By the time of GTAIII he's no longer working the streets, but in his day he could bust heads with the best of them. * SuperDrowningSkills: Back in Liberty and the water is still as good for you as a heart attack * VillainProtagonist * WellDoneSonGuy [[/folder]] [[folder: The Yakuza]] !! Asuka The head of the Yakuza in Liberty City along with her brother. * BiTheWay: Carries on a lesbian relationship with [[spoiler: Maria]] while openly trying to seduce Claude. * DepravedBisexual: Played with as her sex games with [[spoiler: Maria]] are meant to be erotic. * DragonLady: A DownplayedTrope but still present. * [[spoiler: KilledOffForReal: Is one of the only bosses of Claude NOT killed by him.]] * TheYakuza [[/folder]] [[folder: The Cartel]] !!Catalina (Grand Theft Auto III) [[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/387787-gta_catalina_large.jpg]] Claude's ex-girlfriend; she shoots him in the bank heist getaway and leaves him for dead. Catalina appears at various points throughout the game in league with anyone Claude's working against, although she's primarily associated with the local Colombian Cartel, and in the end she kidnaps Claude's (presumed) latest love interest to force a final showdown. She also makes an appearance as a supporting character in ''San Andreas''; when C.J. is forced out of Los Santos, her cousin (and C.J.'s sister's boyfriend) Cesar Vialpando sets the two up for a crime spree throughout the countryside. A violent one sided (with Catalina as the active party) love affair begins to take form until she finds Claude, and the two leave the state to harass C.J. with obscene phone calls for the rest of the game. * AndYourLittleDogToo: "Leave the panic button or I kill your children, too!" * AxCrazy - In ''GTAIII'', she already shoots two of her apparent love interests, but it goes even further in ''San Andreas'': she has graves dug by her house, she [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale sexually abuses]] C.J. (and still thinks she loves him), she threatens to kill/castrate C.J., and she takes glee in killing any cops or civilians who get in her way. * BigBad: Of ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIII''. * ChronicBackstabbingDisorder - To be perfectly fair it's served her pretty well until the end of ''GTAIII''. * ComedicSociopath * EstablishingCharacterMoment: Our first glimpse of her is shooting Claude and his partner, then snatching up the stolen money for herself. ** In ''San Andreas'', Carl comes upon her threatening a barful of helpless men with a knife, taunting their lack of masculinity. --->"You big streak of Yankee piss! I've seen fucking eunuchs with more balls that you!" * ForTheEvulz- While other antagonist have reasons for their actions against the heroes, she just enjoys robbing and killing. * FreudianExcuse - This dialogue from ''San Andreas'', made at the conclusion of her robbery missions. -->Catalina: Carl, you have to be fast and totally ruthless! No fucking about like in the betting shop!\\ CJ: What?! If you hadn't started bustin' things would've been sweet!\\ Catalina: They had to die because you were slow and stupid! [[FreudianSlip Like a big fat brat who eats chocolates while his father gives nothing to his stepdaughter but stale bread]]!\\ CJ: What? Where did that come from?\\ Catalina: Enough! I'm not speaking to you anymore! * ItsAllAboutMe: She only cares about working by herself, and betrays just about anyone whom she worked with. * {{Jerkass}} / JerkWithAHeartOfJerk * [[SirSwearsalot Lady Swears-a-lot]] * NoodleImplements: Carl's unpleasant exeperience with Cat's "rack." * SerialKiller: She has three bodies buried in his yard, and it is unknown why. * SpicyLatina * {{Yandere}}: For all her personality issues, she can also go from almost sweet and caring towards Carl and absolutely batshit about killing him on a whim. [[/folder]] [[folder: Other Characters]] !!8-Ball A demolitions expert in Liberty City (even though car bombs shops everywhere in the III continuity use his name.) Connected to the Leone family, and a buddy to Claude and (to a greater degree) Mike. * BaldOfAwesome * ExpositionFairy * IOweYouMyLife !!Phil Cassidy Phil appears in every single game from the GTA III continuity (with the only exceptions being San Andreas and Advance). He is a weapon-dealer who specializes in big guns...really big guns. His first appearance is in GTA III, where he only appears in one mission, wherein Claude helps him defend his weapon supply from the Colombian Cartel. At this point he wears military clothing and is nicked-named "The One Armed Bandit" because of his left arm he claims to have lost doing a battle in Nicaragua. In Vice City, were his screen time is vastly expanded, it is revealed that never was in the army, but was repeatedly turn down because of bad temper and heavy drinking, and that he, in fact, lost his arm do to an accident with some home distilled alcohol and a homemade bomb. Apparently he would later make his friends keep up the lie. In what is presumably a ContinuityNod, Phil only appears in a short cameo in Liberty City Stories, while Vice City Stories once again features him a bit more prominently. * TheAlcoholic * AnArmAndALeg: Contrary to what he says, he didn't lose it in Nicaragua. [[spoiler: Accidentally blew it off in Vice City with a small explosive while drunk.]] * HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: --> * While being very drunk* "The thing is Vicky boy, my daddy was an angry man. He never, ever told me I was special. In fact - he used to beat me. Especially when he caught me staring at my cousin or my sister. You know what he said to me? He said I'd be better off dead..." * PhonyVeteran * PornStache - In Vice City Stories * TriggerHappy !!Donald Love Liberty City's resident media mogul; first introduced in ''Grand Theft Auto III'' seeking Claude's services for [[MacGuffinEscortMission McGuffin escort.]] After having a cameo in ''Vice City'' he comes back as a supporting character - and more neurotic than ever - in ''Liberty City Stories'' as the Leone family's preferred candidate for mayor. * AffablyEvil: He's impeccably polite and professional, even while planning to invoke a gang war to drive down real estate prices. * AllElectionsAreSeriousBusiness: Entering the mob-controlled mayoral race in Liberty City. (hint: ''Not'' [[StrawCharacter as a democrat]]). * BeardOfSorrow: Sprouts one after losing both the election and his empire in ''Liberty City Stories''. * CorruptCorporateExecutive * {{Expy}}: A fairly obvious one for Donald Trump. * HeyItsThatVoice: In ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIII III]]'', he's played by [[TwinPeaks Kyle]] [[DesperateHousewives MacLachlan]]. * ImAHumanitarian: Revealed in ''Liberty City Stories'' as clarification of what he did at the "morgue parties" referenced in ''[[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIII GTA 3]]''. * IntergenerationalFriendship: Combined with OddFriendship. Donald Love has a deep and abiding loyalty to the Old Chinese Man that we never get clarified. * KarmaHoudini: Big time. * ScrewThisImOutOfHere: Avoids getting caught up in the mob wars he's stirred up by leaving town. Given he was originally slated to die, this proves to be astonishing foresight. * UngratefulBastard: Not to the PC, but his own mentor who he murdered in order to steal the fortune thereof. * TheVoiceless: Due to Kyle Maclachlan's absence in ''Vice City''. He starts to introduce himself to Tommy, but Avery [[LampshadeHanging keeps cutting him off and telling him to shut up.]] * WhatHappenedToTheMouse: He simply disappears after all his missions are completed in ''III''. !! The Old Chinese Man A mysterious character who kicks off much of the plot but never gets his story clarified. * HeroOfAnotherStory: Claude is freed from his prison car due to the fact the Cartel attacked it to get at the Old Chinese Man. * IntergenerationalFriendship: With Donald Love. * TheMentor: Implied to be his relationship with Donald Love. * OddFriendship: With Donald love. * ScrewThisImOutOfHere: Escapes Liberty City with Donald Love. * TheVoiceLess [[/folder]]
