* DwindlingParty: The Vault Dweller's memoirs confirms that he partnered up with Ian, and was "adopted" by Dogmeat, neither of whom survived his quest - Ian was killed in Necropolis, burned alive by a Super Mutant with a flamethrower, and Dogmeat died at Mariposa, killed by the automatic defences inside the base.

* YouDoNotWantToKnow: Even in his memoirs, the Vault Dweller refused to talk about whatever it was he had found in the Vault beneath the Los Angeles Cathedral, only stating that when he left "the Master of the Mutant Army was no more..."

* AgeGapRomance: Although the Vault Dweller and his wife have no canonical age, the fact that the Vault Dweller was at least in his late 40s when his daughter was born may indicate that he had an age difference with his wife of at least 10 years.

* CuttingOffTheBranches: ZigZagged. Many actions and characteristics of the player character are set in stone in the sequel like rescuing Tandi, wiping out the Khan raiders, helping the Followers of the Apocalypse in the Boneyard, and fixing the water pump in Necropolis, though the ghoul inhabitants are wiped out by the Super Mutants. Many characters also refer to the Vault Dweller as a man and a fairly heroic character. However, many other things are left vague or skipped over entirely: the fate of almost all other communities you encountered are left ambiguous (other than that they weren't wiped out by the mutants and eventually joined the NCR), and most customizable aspects (like name, age, appearance, and personality) are left out or barely touched upon. A few [=NPCs=] wonder aloud whether the Vault Dweller was a man or a woman, but ''Fallout 2'' confirms they were a male.

(Helped because his daughter would have been born in his late 40's or early 50's, where he would be very old if he were a woman.)

* WellIntentionedExtremist: He honestly believes that converting everyone into Super Mutants is the only way to ensure humanity's survival in the post-apocalyptic world. He's even willing to allow people to opt-out of being mutated, provided they allow themselves to be sterilized and live the rest of their lives under Super Mutant control. That last part actually ironic, considering his Super Mutants are all infertile in the first place. Indeed, that realization is the one way you can talk him down; he's so set in his ways, the only way to stop him is hard proof that the end result is self-defeating for his overall goal.

* {{Gorn}}: The game has plenty of violent deaths, but the Lieutenant's death animation is [[https://fallout.gamepedia.com/File:MALIEUBL-0.gif the goriest one in the game]]: His body effectively tears itself apart bit by bit, almost as if some manner of internal cybernetics were hit by a lucky shot and started undergoing catastrophic failure, taking their user with them. Notice also his guts spewing copiously out of his stomach in the process, even as he shakes himself to pieces.

* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Though it's never confirmed if it's canon or not, the Vault Dweller had the option of sending water merchants to Vault 13, extending the deadline for how long the Vaults water stores would last - and ''shortened'' the deadline until the Master found them, as the rumors of a working, inhabited Vault quickly spread in the Wasteland.

* FaceHeelTurn: In the non-canonical ending where the Vault Dweller joined The Master, allowed himself to be turned into a Super Mutant, and led a raid against Vault 13, personally killing the Overseer.

* IconicOutfit: His Vault 13 jumpsuit. The people of Arroyo treats it with almost religious reverence in the sequel, even though the Vault Dweller himself stopped wearing it years before he vanished.

* IconicOutfit: His Vault 13 jumpsuit. The people of Arroyo treats it with almost religious reverence in the sequel, even though the Vault Dweller himself stopped wearing it years before he vanished. Especially ironic, considering Vault suits were the default clothing for ''everyone'' in Vault 13, and in every other Vault for that matter, the only difference being the number on each suit. The other Vault Dwellers who eventually joined him in founding Arroyo presumably wore them as well, but there's no mention of any suits other than his.

* UncertainDoom: While he's almost certainly dead from old age by now, no one actually knows what happened to the Vault Dweller, as he was never seen again after leaving Arroyo (not counting the non-canon ''Brotherhood of Steel'', though rumors and uncomfirmed sightings would be reported for years afterwards.

In the original ''Fallout'' the protagonist is a FeaturelessProtagonist fully customizable in age, name, gender, skillset, and through dialogue, personality. Three pre-made Vault Dwellers -- [[GuileHero Albert Cole]], [[DumbMuscle Max Stone]], or [[ClassyCatBurglar Natalia Dubrovhsky]] -- were available for selection, or you could make your own character. In all subsequent games the actions of the first game are attributed to a male character known only as "the Vault Dweller", who is not explicitly based on any of the pre-made characters.

* OneManArmy: The Vault Dweller's memoirs indicate that the way they resolved problems, typically with super mutants, was by going in guns blazing.
